The scene between Elsie and Janet is a masterpiece.
What a performance from Elsie that's why she will be the Queen on Corrie 👏👏👏🤩🤩🤩
My gran always said about men with mistresses, "if they can leave their wives, they can leave you too!".
Very true
Got to be one of the best episodes ever, compare those incredible characters, top acting and storylines to today’s garbage that passes for Corrie !!
The woman who played Janet taught me drama for years. A truly great woman, absolute stickler for discipline but very kind!
Ohhh interesting...
Another one of Oldham’s illustrious acting alumni.
17:45 Betty Turpin looks so pretty and elegant, love her hair up in a chignon and the pink coat, very elegant.
Yes indeed very very feminine
She looks really youthful in this episode. I felt Betty otherwise was made to be older than her years for the most part even though she was only 50/51 at most in this episode (only 3 years older than Elsie).
She is funny, too.
Two actresses doing a two-hander,marvellous dialogue. They don’t make them like that anymore
Dont just love Hilda Ogden. Some of the things she says are great
A legend.
Yes she was one hell of a woman was Elsie. It’s grate to see these old episodes as I was a child when these were on tv. Always knew that Elsie was a fantastic Lady but to see her as a grown up you realise just how wonderful she Really was. Saw her in Somerset as child opening shop on Saturday morning. Every bit a Lady. Xx
They just dont make them like Elsie anymore😔😔😔😔
Good...cos a woman worth her salt would ditch a bloke that cheats and not fight to keep him.
@@adrianlast195 then you just dont know much about Elsie Tanner
@@ohwell94 I like her character and was brought up on Corrah so know quite a bit.She chose bad men one after the other.
@@adrianlast195 yup that's true Elsie choice in fellas was bad
But she was a tough lady! Just up socks and on with it attitude
Wow Elsie girl, brilliant.
This episode should have been on the 1971 DVD. I don't watch Corrie anymore as it's well past it's golden era (1960-1987). I agree with glamdolly 20 that it's not what it use to be and is now no different to Emmerdale, Eastenders and Hollyoaks.
This is when Corrie. Was good not like today Stan and hilda. Brilliant
I agree! I've finally given up on modern Corrie, the stories are ridiculously far fetched and depressing - nothing but violence and ugliness - and I couldn't care less if today's pathetic characters live or die! I'm afraid when you see how fantastic the show used to be, the writing and the cast, the contemporary version looks really shabby by comparison.
Rob Clark yep.
This is when soaps were worth watching not like now.
Best and dramatic episode of 1971
Elsie had class!
Why would anyone cheat on Elsie? She's a fine looking woman, a good sense of humour and likes a bit of how's ya father.
Lol.
Janet had a lucky escape. Within 12 months Alan was battling the demon drink and falling out with Elsie even more!
Corrie was only half and hour then. Possibly the right amount of time to have an impact. Also they has much less characters. Characters that had a background viewers found relatable Unfortunately Corrie followed American soap operas. Corrie was a serial, the very use of the term 'soap operas' tells you how American the show went. Adding all these young characters and becoming more like tabloid news.
its still half an hour now
Bet was a poor mans Elsie without the class
Women trying to come between a married couple... People kick off at such happenings today.
Amazing how much viewers' tolerance levels have changed considerably in 50 years.
we all should could take lessons from a elsie tanner , she was tough, but classy , they don't make women like her anymore, the women on corrie now are pathetic
There was nothing classy about Elsie Tanner. She was a cheap nasty old tart and a hypocrite.
@Emily Bishop that was Elsies character...a woman who took great pride in her appearance constantly on the look out for love
Yet in her times she was alone she could stand on her own 2 feet
Carla makes me think of Elsie Tanner sometimes. Very beautiful and fashionably dressed but acid-tongued and from a rough background.
@@Sawrattan they are nothing alike lol
@@SawrattanThe difference is that Elsie was likeable.
This episode must have been aired a week before Rita's first appearance in Coronation Street in September 1971.
Simon Shreeve Rita's first appearance was 1964.
Furthermore, she only returned as a regular cast member in 1972, not 71
Judith Barker was Lesley Sharp’s Mother in Scott and Bailey. She pops up a lot. She was recently in Emmerdale too.
Strain...Champ...Bite...Swearing...Sweating....kersplosh....deapth charge....iceberg like only tip breaking surface....pout.. relief....so many emotions....Read next comment for more details
I think the Janet /Alan story line was originally for Irma Ogden and Alan but she dropped out the show - maybe she didnt fancy the prospect of being the bad girl - she was more of a funny light hearted character - im sorry she left but glad her character didnt go down that road
Elsie has similar delivery to Tina Turner.
I think Tommy Boyle appeared years later in Corrie again.
Elsie what a legend the QUEEN OF CORRIE
I feel so sorry for people that are married it must be grim
Sweetie marriage is a 2 person job that takes work! It's not all fun and games and trips to Paris
@@ohwell94 you should be a scriptwriter!🥰
ohwell94 That’s why we’re glad we’re not married.
Sadly once the trust has gone it’s never coming back as however small the doubt is always there.
Its Lucile Blew-it
Newsflash Janet - just because someone is married, doesn’t give you the right to wade in on someone. Trying to act all hard done by because everyone is married and you’re still single - haha - you’re having a laugh aren’t ya. How’s that Elsie’s problem? You said so yourself you went after him
Ty so much for uploading these episodes great fan from nz here 💓
19:36 OMG this Frank character returns in the 80s (I think) as Deirdre's married boyfriend, shady small time gangster Phil somebody? Amazing how often Coronation Street recycled the same actors for different roles!
Phil Jennings
Phil Jennings, of course! Thank you. Someone else mentioned on another thread that actor was in Brookside for a time as well - he seems to have cornered the market in soap villains in the 'eighties!
Janet's little pitty party soliloquy about why shouldn't married men be allowed to love more than one woman is ridiculous but she shows such cheek that she thinks she has her reasons and Elsie should listen to her side. Janet's side boiled down to, I don't have it but I want it so I stole it from someone else and it isn't fair that I should be put down. Basically its ok to steal if someone else has what you want. Hmmmm...
I never liked Janet...….....
This is not the the full episode as its' missing the rovers scenes at the start of part two
Elsie is a much better woman than me. I would have walked and left Alan and Janet to it and their karma.
Is this a missed Buggarnation St episode????
I think they could make a great episode out of this. Especially Frank and Bert/Bet!😂
Her and Ken never seemed to match.
Elsie had her teeth fix.
And it looks like she had some lower lip botox too.
Money does wonders.
0:38 Janet Reid cracks a fart out of utter fear.
Is that Peter Kay next to Betty ?
I do laugh when some insist on comparing Corrie from decades back to the Corrie of today. Corrie had its share of wooden actors back then as it does today, they weren't all from the RADA,lol. Look at Ken Barlow, his acting's so wooden I'm surprised he's never been creosoted. He has stayed where he is simply because if he ever let throughout his time on't Street he'd have never worked again. Yeah, it has it's crap periods now, as it did then, but it still reflects the time in which it's set.
JohnPaul Dixon very well stated! (Applause)
Totally agree! The actress playing Rita (Barbara Knox) is just dreadful. Horrible ‘actress’ but where would she fit in beside The Cobbles? That’s right, on the dole no doubt! Unbelievable she’s still on.
Elise Tanner is so boss. "Get going and don't come back"
Traaaacy
Bloody hell. Was Elsie Tanner ever bloody happy? Every avenger I see her in she has a scowl on here faces; or is angry, or is crying, or is taking down to or yelling. It always seems a drama.
Very dramatic these soap operas.
Elsie usually had good reason but yes shes fiery and angry at times . She was amazing in this episode!
At 15:17 the old milk truck. How long did they last to?
say that again in english, mate?
@@drssexy2142 How long did they last mate??
Do you have Ernest and Emily engagement do in 1971
It may be on Daily Motion. Here's the link to Emily and Ernest's wedding, it's a great episode: dai.ly/x5fcc4k
Yes. Early August 71. Janet appeared in that episode at the end and set her sights on Alan then.
Any woman who wronged Elsie Tanner took her life in her hands! Is that Janet, who married Ken then killed herself in his bed after they split? I think it's the same actress - but is it the same character?
Indeed it is. Janet Reid. :-)
Janet was a piece of work but her suicide was so sad.
Ena Sharples 😁
0:00 what building?
I think it's these ones. They're near Salford crescent Station and mcdonald's. I used to pass them in the 70s on my way to my grans. Thorn Court
