MANGALORE, INDIA - Mangalore, on the West Coast of India in the state of Karnataka is a seafood paradise. Today we’re going on a an ultimate Indian seafood tour! Get ready for some of the best fish fry and seafood masala in India!
Dhakke Fish Market - It’s always good to know where you fresh seafood is coming from and so first thing we did was explore the central fish market. Mangalore is known for quite a large fishing industry.
Hotel Narayana (maps.app.goo.gl/PzGqPqwgYESpp...) - Going to the fish market, you’ll be ready to eat seafood and Hotel Narayana is famous for their fish fry and only fish fry. They have a variety of fish, especially kingfish and pomfret which they coat in their magical masala, and fry in coconut oil. It’s something truly incredible, especially with the crispy fried masala. Meals here cost about 500 INR ($6 USD)
Machali Seafood (maps.app.goo.gl/Wzo6xuT4GSKy7...) - Next up on this Indian food tour, Machali Seafood is known to be one of the best and most popular seafood restaurants in Mangalore and they attract a huge crowd everyday. We tried about a dozen different incredible dishes including their famous shell less crab ghee roast, pomfret green masala, and crispy rava fish fry.
Giri Manja’s (maps.app.goo.gl/HAfs3xNBezsDh...) - Another legendary seafood restaurant in Mangalore is Giri Manja’s. We tried their famous fish fry, golden prawns, and probably my favorite, the extra spicy Indian mackerel.
Mangalore is a friendly city in South India where you’ll find some mind blowing Indian seafood dishes. It’s an incredible place, highly recommended.

Dear Mark, you should read this story in history. In the Mahabharata war in India, the King of Udupi undertook the important task of cooking food for all the warriors, who(Udupi king and his soldiers) were fighting without taking actual part in the war. He was cooking food for 50 lakh people every day.
So Lord Shri Krishna blessed them that Udupi and nearby areas will always be the foremost in the country of India in terms of food.

As a Mangalorean, I couldn’t help but notice that all the fishes, crabs, quid and any seafood done in Machali is already precooked. They are just coating it with a chosen masala later, probably because of amount of customers they get. The GiriManja’s chefs are cooking every sea food fresh. I would recommend GiriManja’s based on this, if you don’t want to lose out on the natural juices coming out of fish, crab, squid etc., which you may lose if it is precooked.
