Chipping is my favorite part of golf. Some great tips Danny. Can I add 1 more. Don’t be afraid to make a bad chip. Even the best in the world sometimes fluff a chip. It happens and if you accept it, chipping can be much more fun.

Okay, I rarely comment on any videos (maybe never?), but this deserves one. I played two rounds of golf over the weekend, and using this method to chip probably saved me 2 strokes each round. In fact, I even chipped one in from the side of the green. I found that I was able to get a really good feel for both distance and aim. I highly recommend!

I had no confidence with my 56 deg wedge around the greens over the last few years- lot of thin and fat chips followed by 3 putts. Thanks Danny for the great vids on chipping around the green- my short game has improved immensely this summer! You have a nice way of explaining and breaking down golf shots for all levels of golfers.

Very timely for me Danny - thanks. These short chips are terrifying for me - 90% of my ‘unforced error’ shots happen here - my putting is pretty good, my variable drives can be rescued, but I often fluff short chips - sometimes following a fluffed 3 foot chip with an over compensated thin that shoots away- and those extra shots add up!

Best explanation ever of how ball spin affects the roll out on the green. Watching your stroke, you can see that your backswing is the length as your follow through and it is a nice easy "putter-like" stroke. I love your showing how the alignment stripe on a ball can help you get the ball rolling/spinning true. When in the yard, I will use the two color Skilz (black/yellow) to show spin. Much the same principle. Great lesson to use when working on the chips around the green in the backyard!

Hi again Danny. I’m a ~21 handicapper and have always struggled with my short game. Historically, I’d either attempt to putt from a crazy distance out or usually fat/thin my 58 degree to an embarrassing end.
I’ve just returned from our annual golf tournament (Celtic Manor this year) with a first place trophy. Using the methods outlined here (and practicing before) I felt incredibly confident around the greens. I’d find myself looking forward to taking out my Gap wedge, attacking the shot and usually leaving it ~6 foot from the pin if not in gimme territory. It takes out the complexity and leaves an extremely manageable shot.
I 3-putted only 6 times across 3 rounds and managed 39 stableford points on the 2010 course on the last day.
Just wanted to extend a massive thanks for all your advice and time taken on these videos, this one has genuinely reinvigorated my love of golf.
You may have one and I haven’t yet found it, but a video on sensible course management tips for ~15-25 handicappers would be really helpful if you’re looking for ideas 😆 as mentioned before, I also have the same shoes, so maybe that’s it 😉 thanks again.

Great lesson, Danny. I have been struggling with my chips, with solid contact and getting the ball to roll out. I used to use the “hands forward method”, I got the ball to roll out but again struggled getting the leading edge stuck in the ground. Now I am trying to use the bounce of a more lofted club to get a more consistent strike, but this method seem to pop the ball higher, with less roll out and some back spin. Do you have any suggestions?

Great instruction as always, Danny. Thank you!
One question I have with regards to distance control…
In addition to using club loft to use different release roll towards the hole, should I be choosing an aiming point on the green and adjusting any swing power to clear the various rough lies between the ball position and the smooth surface? TiA

Hey Danny my problem shot is when there is no green to work with like maybe five feet to the pin but three feet of rough to deal with.

I promise I do NOT sell for Taylor Made!! I’m an 11, recently bought a 62 degree hi toe wedge and it has saved me many strokes already (and HUGE) bragging rights!! phenomenal around the greens…I call it the flop-n-stop!!! Highly recommend

If you want to get the ball releasing a little more you could move it back in your stance a little or take a less lofted club

So Danny, I equate the “pop” as continuing to accelerate through the strike and not slowing. Is that the same?
