the way milch writes drug addicts with the obviousness of their lies and their endless ability to desecrate themselves is powerful. he writes it so matter of factly that i think a person in recovery might find it a tough watch.
The whole 'cat piss smell' routine has me rolling. Then top it off with 'throw yourself of the balcony and stay in the muck till I come down' ROFL LMAO. OMG Al is awesome.
He won a Golden Globe and recieved an Emmy nomination for this role so didn't do too badly, however there hasnt been anything out there this good since for him to shine in, not a fan of American Gods but thankfully he is back in the Deadwood movie
He brought just a tiny bit of Lovejoy to the role. I'm not saying much, but sometimes a gentle of a nudge. Again, very little, but maybe a little fragment, sometimes.
100% agree. Ian McShane/Al Swearangen is what made Deadwood work, he is the glue that holds everything together. Amazing character, the best in TV history.
"I'm just gonna roll forward so I don't get trampled." is to me the funniest part of the whole scene. I don't know exactly how to describe it. It's so subservient that he explains the basic need to get out of the way of getting trampled by horses, but it's also something else; maybe something about the way he says it- so matter of fact like this is all just how he expects his life to be.
@@donkeyears4704 He reveals himself in asking whether Al and Wu can understand each other, fearing that Wu could give Al enough information to finger Jimmy and Leon for the theft. not to mention trying to change the subject all casual like, when he wasn't in there just a friendly chat

I also think Jimmy not being more distraught by the lack of resupply is telling. "Sounds like I'm in for a dry time," isn't usually the casual acceptance one would expect from a dope fiend being told he can't get more dope.

OneEyedJack1970 Al is a clever bastard, but it doesn’t take a genius to catch a dope fiend in a lie. Especially when they’re high and trying to feign sobriety/withdrawals
My take on this was that it was Al's way of telling the liar he's been caught out. However, Bollock also seems to be doing his (without saying so) when he talks to Hearst in a later episode. Maybe their olfactory senses were more highly tuned than ours. Makes sense, imagine the stink coming out of Canberra if we could smell it.

so much depth to david milch's writing. every line is weighted with meaning and intent and more underlying meaning and intent beneath the obvious. the reason why people compare it to shakespeare so often is more so than it seems so "high minded" to the common listener; it's that you can take every single line and chew it over in your mouth and savor the initital tastes and the after tastes, as well.

Good argument for never touching opiates. They've been making men into animals for centuries now.
Milch is an addict in recovery.
Have you thought of the person that would've done the same who wasn't under the influence?

That Jimmy actually attempted to feign withdrawal sickness, while higher than a kite was preposterous to Al. Pure comedy gold🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
