I wish we'd gotten to see either Seth versus Irish (I can't remember his name, Swearengen's toadie) or Seth versus the Sea Creature... that's Hearst's toadie that Irish killed.
The only reason Bullock was able to live was because Al allowed it. There were at least two times in the show when Al was debating killing him and decided not to because perhaps he could serve a purpose.
I've gotta throw this in there: Even if Seth DIDN'T purposely throw Al (and I guess himself) over the balcony, it definitely seems like he DID purposely land on top of Al. Quick thinking on his part.
I think Seth pulled him with him deliberately, but landing on top of him was pure chance. Had Al been on top (if you'll forgive my choice of words), things would have gone very differently for both!
Interestingly before the balcony which changed the whole fight, Swearengen focused on throwing strikes while Bullock took more of a grappling approach only punching when he had Al in a headlock. It helped Bullock big time as Swearengen was trying to throw him off the balcony but Bullock was able to pull Al off and control the fall instead. True to life in a way, striking rarely beats grappling.
It depends where you're fighting too alot of people practice on a mat or in a ring but most fight take place where all kinds of stuff to run into or trip over and bust your head or even balconies to go crashing through. Only thing about grappling you have to watch out for the background or you end up running you're own head in the wall or the ground performing a slam it's easy to knock oneself out but even worse is you couldnt trust somebody with a knife to not pull it when you give up your back shooting for there legs, if they can fight the takedown or get against a wall or grab on to something to steady thereself they can put a knife in your back or hit you in the back of head with fist or whatever they can grab hold of. You're also vulnerable to there buddies unless you've got a couple of your own to keep them off you. In my experience a situation you cant control with people and stuff in the way, improvised weapons lying about against a likely already armed opponent and maybe his buddies staying on your feet is your best bet. Grappling can and should be used a mix of striking and grappling with as much dirty fighting as possible is probably the best bet but you're right about graplling because if a man cant grapple then he'll end up on his back so it wont matter id advise anybody start with grappling and build from there because all things being equal the man who is the better grappler will control the fight or if you're hurt you'll have to be able to tie up and take down or defend off your back.
I read somewhere - Wikipedia maybe - that the producers wanted to stay reasonably close to the actual history. The show "ends" where the knowledge of what went on there ends. Peace.

Al knows Bullock is on his way to stir shit up and make a mistake so he distracts him by insulting him. He literally goaded him into a fight to keep his mind on the correct path. An incredible show. Bullock and Swearengen putting aside their differences to fight Hearst is at the heart of it but it's so much more. For me, only The Wire and Six Feet Under come close.
@tgodd: Yeah, you are right. Nice catch. I could argue Al may be smart enough to have surmised this by Bullock's long look at them and the fact that a woman and boy were arriving without a male but the principle fact remains: Al saw no more use in Bullock and was going to end him then. So, the knife pull was not out of cowardice but of ending a political liability. Thanks again.

Johnny Burns just mowin' everybody down! Can't fashion a thought but can unintentionally run iron!
I know it is fake but Swearengen is one tough mofo...that fall off the balcony would have taken the fight out of most guys but Swearengen comes back ready for more.
I want to be Bullock when I grow up.
We all wanted them to get into a fight.
And, we will NEVER forget this one!
Great fuckin scene!! Welcome to Deadwood
Imagine the beating Al would have gotten without any intervention.
One of the greatest series i have ever watched. The dialogue was unnatural and complex to listen to sometimes, in comparison to modern speech, but at the same time the emotion in the acting always provided clarity as to what was going on. I could miss a word here or two in a sentence, sometimes requiring a 2nd rewatching, but always know exactly what was going on and the message that was being conveyed.
the dialogue was western Shakespeare :)
@@FronzelNeekburm Yeah i am not gonna lie... i missed bits hahah... it was so different that the predictive text feature my brain offered me did not align at all. Had to pay attention sometimes
@@MrSoggyjocks oh for sure; it's almost another language at times.... great for rewatching, seems almost fresh sometimes because chances are slim you ever fully memorized a scene
This is what happens when 2 badasses fight eachother. Their badassery cancels eachother out.
Welcome to fuckin Deadwood!!!
great show, great dialogue. great actors with so much presence/ ...
I wish we'd gotten to see either Seth versus Irish (I can't remember his name, Swearengen's toadie) or Seth versus the Sea Creature... that's Hearst's toadie that Irish killed.
Bullock throwing absolute haymakers after going off the balcony
A teachable moment.
I never noticed before but Al is having trouble peeing even before the fight in this scene.
His scene with removing the bladder stone just makes me cringe so badly
The only reason Bullock was able to live was because Al allowed it. There were at least two times in the show when Al was debating killing him and decided not to because perhaps he could serve a purpose.
That's how a real fight looks like.
Exactly. Each punch clearly hurting the person getting hit and the person throwing the punch, instead of wailing on eachother nonstop with no pain.
I like when Al backtracks cos he really can’t be arsed for a fight and misjudged the sheriffs short fuse. He has a look of “really? Over some jokes?”
One of my favorite scenes in the whole series.
Thank you for the uploading.
Man I loved that show, what a shame it went off before its time. Too expensive I heard, right?
I read somewhere - Wikipedia maybe - that the producers wanted to stay reasonably close to the actual history. The show "ends" where the knowledge of what went on there ends.
Peace.
It's not an accurate telling of real history. It should have never aired to begin with. Good riddance to pure garbage.
A damn lie. Not even close to real history. Do you ever pick up a book or do you believe anything that you're told. I'm presuming the latter. Go back to school dumbass!
@@garyball3012 I know it's 11 months late, but you have some godawful shit taste.
@@garyball3012 The hell ya gonna learn in school these days how to imagine gender pronouns without offense and how to gravel to retarded Marxists and feminists weirdos who had weak or absentee fathers? want to read history books real ones which ya should get some damn books then from many places stay the fuck out of garbage subversive "schools".
best way to start a season fuckin awesome
Remains the greatest use of celluloid I have ever seen. Welcome to fuckin’ Deadwood
Al knows Bullock is on his way to stir shit up and make a mistake so he distracts him by insulting him. He literally goaded him into a fight to keep his mind on the correct path. To be able to convey something like that on film is wild. Show was perfect. I'm thankful for The Sopranos, but I wish they didn't have to pick one over the other. Ultimately they didn't pick Deadwood.
"Will I find you've got a knife?"
Bullock, this dude ONLY kills with knives. I'm pretty sure there's a throwaway line where Al admits to not knowing how to shoot a gun lmao
Ian McShane is brilliant as Al Swearengen, tough as a nickle steak :)
What a way to ask someone for help.
I love how they legit talk about improving the camp while getting ready to try and kill each other.
An incredible show. Bullock and Swearengen putting aside their differences to fight Hearst is at the heart of it but it's so much more. For me, only The Wire and Six Feet Under come close.
Best show ...
Edited or not my man Timothy O won that fight! God I need to watch this show, can't believe I didn't when it was on HBO. I watch most of them Curb, Entourage, True Blood, Boardwalk Empire, and now Game of Thrones.
