In an interview Kamal Hassan said he had to memorize the lyrics in reverse order matching stress, sustains, and pauses for each take. Its work. That's the technique one wonders about. Simple. Otherwise, the song was just taken with all those beautiful plot scene ideas and reversed.

So, in the movie Mann Madhan Ambu, Kamal Hassan's character is sharing his past (this song) with the possible lady love (a pure souled female protagonist) who has a bit of a slightly abusive life with her angry, suspecting, controlling fiancé. Her fiancé who appointed Kamal Hassan's character as her spy abroad when she's out on a vacation to refresh from mental exhaustion from career and personal life, is the cause of an accident where the woman in this song dies. Kamal Hassan's character is in need of a lot of money to save his friend, so he obliges but later finds who's at fault and everything becomes right towards the end. Even the bugging fiancé guy gets the fiancée's friend as his girlfriend. Very worthy film but for some reason it didn't make big. Wonderful plot with weighty character building with a humorous touch.

I watched this movie like almost a decade ago, I don't know if I'm right about the following. The man who gives the bride away has to be the one friend in danger for whom Kamal Hassan took the spywork without heart in this movie. As the bride's father passed away, this friend took up the role. If I'm right, the relationships are so damn beautiful. How accepting friends circle are... Especially those in the line of defense for our country.

Neela vaanam means Blue Sky. This song was sung by Kamalhasan himself. He had given a TV interview on how this song was picturised. It was sung and recorded like any other song. The visual part was done scene by scene and played reverse. Sounds simple? No, the real challenge when the audio is being played in normal mode but the visual is played in reverse mode it is almost impossible to make the lip sync between audio and the video. Even if it is slightly out of sync it will look like a dubbing movie. That is the reason why there are only a limited number of close up shots showing his face. For those few lines he had practiced lip movement on the reverse play gibberish and he nailed it.
