Why Everyone Lives In New Jersey

- New Jersey is known for it’s unique dialect, being the only US state where customers can’t pump their own gasoline, and it's infamous Jersey Shore. However it also has the highest population density of any US state with about 95% of New Jersey’s population living in urban areas. This video looks at why everybody lives in New Jersey, breaking down how New Jersey's significant head-start and big city proximity has afforded it with major advantages over other geographically small states.

While NJ doesn't have any major cities, all of its towns are bordered by several other towns.
Most other states (like Massachusetts) have major cities but theres lots of empty space between them. Or maybe the towns in those states have another nearby town in one direction but not in all directions.
Who to apply am interested for this country any job tell me how to apy Pakistan to Jersey
@SomethingDifferentFilms did you mean Prudential Financial instead of Prudent Financial?
Is there Gun culture
People know NJ is close to NY but I don’t think people realize just how super close NJ is to NYC. I live in North Jersey just a block from the Hudson and the city is just a few minutes away. Huge for people who want the benefits of NY without the trash living situations.
unfortunately, plenty of Jersey-ites find themselves commuting into the trash situation everyday. My town is booming, just so they can lure commuters to live there and commute via public transit options.
@@MSHNKTRLwhat town out of curiosity
@abandonedhistoryUS it's not strictly my town, but I'm referring to Hackensack. They re-built the main ave, and the tax incentives allowed for all manner of renovation and new construction. The thing is, in a short while, the influx of residents are going to choke the limited space and resources. By the time the tax incentives expire, the present city officials will have been retired, and it'll be somebody else's problem.
I never realized this wasn’t common knowledge until the Ms. Marvel show on Disney+. I had to explain to someone why you could see the Freedom Tower from Jersey City.
@@chey6073 wait really? 🤣 I need to see that scene now that sounds hilarious.
As a New Jerseyan, thank you so much for making this video. We have always been stuck in New York and Philly's shadows are decades, so it's so refreshing to see us finally getting representation as our own state with our own identity.
I appreciate that Gabe, your right though, even when researching NJ almost everything mentioned NYC or Philly.
I lived in jersey for seven years, and I was such a wonderful time. I thought jersey was some big suburbs with one type of people, only to end up in Newark and wondering why no one told be jersey had so much different races.I avoided New york to stay away from my Jamaicans, only to be driving, looking out the window seeing Jamaican aesthetics .Then been told that Patterson is little Jamaica.😂😂😂
is new jersey good for foreigners? im planning to move in a few years
@@zez160 If you're moving to the US, then you need to move to one of the few walkable areas that we still have, and the best places to find them are the Rust Belt (Great Lakes region), and the original 13 Colonies (the Northeast Corridor especially). Car-centric areas are unlivable and dehumanizing. CityNerd is a great resource for finding walkable American cities and suburbs. Alan Fisher also has videos on Bordentown and Pitman, two walkable suburbs in South Jersey.

New Jersey also has the most preserved land/wildlife per capita, mainly the pine barrens which has many species of animals only found there! and north new jersey has some stunning mountain view’s and waterfalls
This video was about a very small part of New Jersey in the area across the river from New York. 50% of our population lives in that area while the other 50% is spread out around the whole rest of the state. If you drive an hour away from Newark in any direction you will see farms, forests or marsh land. We are called the garden state for a reason.
I grew up in the rural northwest part of the state.

There is a saying about car theft in NJ and its: "If your car is stolen, check Paterson. It'll probably be there and missing it's rims."
That was the old days. These days your car gets cut up in a million pieces in a chop shop, or put on a boat and sent to a foreign country.
Oregon is also another where you can’t pump your own gas.
Actually as of this year (2023) Oregon residents can now pump their own gas. Making Jersey the only state where it isn't allowed. Thank you for the comment though Deyoung.

I was born and raised in central NJ. I now live in the Midwest. I will admit, NJ had plenty to do and there were some nice places to go, especially in Northwest NJ. Lots of farms and I had the beaches. However, after living in the Midwest, I don't think I could ever go back and live. Very expensive. The one thing that always stuck out was the cost of auto insurance. It was crazy expensive. But that wouldn't stop me from living there. Where I live now, I enjoy no traffic, clean air and cheap auto insurance. But I'll always cherish the days I did live in NJ.

I know this video isn't about why people move to NJ, but if you ever make a video about that, it will be worth mentioning the high immigrant population and communities, which attracts more immigrants (including me!).
That's a great idea, I am going to try and chat with locals more when planning out future videos to get this kind of insight that often falls out of research. I will eventually make a video on why people move to and out of New Jersey, so this is a great bit of information.
And with the immigrants populations come some amazing food
Very true. Especially in North Jersey, we are a melting pot of cultures and you can experience different cultures and cuisines every other few blocks.
Hey!! I’m a child of immigrants, my parents came to the city I live in due to the Ecuadorian community here, which helped them feel at home
yea it really is awful so many people have moved here, especially during/ after the pandemic. its getting so crowded. the most annoying part is all new drivers. our state used to be known for the most savage drivers in the country after nyc, doing 80-90 on the highway used to be standard. now you have to cut up and swerve around in the right two lanes just to maintain 80 half the time. so many city people or immigrants that never drove before, sitting in the left lane in huge suvs doing exactly the speed limit. people will literally cause traffic jams for no reason, i see people slow down to like 30 just to go around a bend in the highway or cause the sun i shining in their direction. its disgusting honestly.
What’s crazy is you cannot develop in 22 percent of the state because it’s protected open space ( the pine lands) but if you could another 500 k people would live here minimally. Also if Staten Island were part of New Jersey which it should be because it’s touching New Jersey the state would have an extra million people minimum.

That's a great idea Sweet, also one of the reasons I focus on a central theme and keep videos relatively short is because I fully intend to make multiple videos about some states (maybe even cities). Because a single 5-8 minute video about one facet simply of a city/state isn't enough and there are so many other perspectives I want to look at, especially for a huge state like California.
@@SomethingDifferentFilms For Sure. Thank You! 🙂 I'm From Sacramento Born and Raised. What City / State are You From?
Simple answer is proximity to several major US cities. You have New York City to the north, Philadelphia to the west, and Baltimore/ Washington DC to the south all within reasonable commute depending on where you live in the state. (Baltimore and DC are a little far but still a drivable distance). You get all of that, plus one of the best beach access on the east coast. Atlantic City, wildwood, Ocean City, Cape May etc. all the east coast states have beaches but the NJ shore is one of the most popular destinations outside of Miami and Myrtle Beach since we have Atlantic City which is a diet Las Vegas. AC is full of casinos and you have the most famous boardwalk in the world. NJ has a lot to offer. Plus you have some really famous colleges like Princeton, Rutgers, Stevens etc. the biggest rollercoaster in the world is in NJ at Six Flags Great Adventure. NJ just has so much to offer in such a small space compared to other states, like Pennsylvania, where it’s just 2 pockets of civilization and then nothing inbetween. Like seriously, what do you do if you live in central PA? Central NJ is farm land but it’s still within driving distance of the Jersey shore and major cities. Central PA is at least 3-4 hours away from either Pittsburgh or Philadelphia.
Many states only have a single major point of civilization, if you don’t live near there it can be tough on a lot of people.
New Jersey born and raised and go figure I'm one of the 5% that live in a rural area. There's a nearby city of about 4,000 people but other that there's just a bunch of farmland and scenic routes around it.
I moved from the 95% to the 5% area myself, and life is good
Should have named this video "Why everybody lives in NORTH Jersey". Seemed like you completely ignored anything about South Jersey and the Pinelands. #PorkRoll
I was focused on why 95% of Jersey residents live in urban cores, and why it's the state with the highest population density by far. I am going to make future videos that look at different aspects of cities and states that I am covering now, you can't do anything justice in 5-10 minutes, but perhaps looking at a state or city from multiple angles can.

The only time I heard boston mentioned was when he said "nearby expensive major cities, like nyc, boston, and dc." DC and boston both just being a few hours from the border. I think he didn't mention philly in the sentence cause it's not actually very expensive in the scheme of things, with. So many abandoned properties. New Jersey is a state located in the northeastern region of the United States of America, and it is bordered by New York and Pennsylvania. The state has an area of 22,608 square kilometers, and it is the fourth smallest state in the country. Despite its small size, New Jersey has a lot to offer in terms of culture, education, history, and entertainment. In this essay, I will explore some of the key aspects that make New Jersey a unique and vibrant state.
History
New Jersey is rich in history, and it has played a significant role in the American Revolution. The state was one of the 13 colonies that declared independence from Britain, and it played a pivotal role in the war effort. The Battle of Trenton (1776) is one of the most famous battles in American history, which took place during the revolution. In this battle, George Washington led a surprise attack on the Hessian troops, who were stationed in Trenton, and he managed to secure a victory that boosted morale among the American soldiers.
Apart from the revolutionary war, New Jersey has a rich history that dates back to the pre-colonial era. The state was inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Lenape, who were the original inhabitants of the region. Europeans began to settle in the area during the 17th century, and Dutch and Swedish colonists were the first to establish settlements in the region. Later on, the British took over control of the area, and it became one of the 13 original colonies.
Culture
New Jersey has a vibrant culture that is reflective of its diverse population. The state is home to people from different ethnic backgrounds, including African Americans, Hispanics, Asians, and whites. As a result, the state's culture is a blend of different influences, including music, art, and cuisine.
One of the most significant cultural events in New Jersey is the annual Atlantic City Airshow, which takes place every summer. The event attracts tens of thousands of people, and it features some of the world's top aerobatics teams, including the United States Air Force Thunderbirds and the United States Navy Blue Angels.
New Jersey is also home to a range of museums, including the Newark Museum, which is the state's largest museum. The museum features a broad range of exhibits, including art, science, and natural history. Another popular museum is the Liberty Science Center, which is located in Jersey City. This museum focuses on science and technology, and it features interactive exhibits that allow visitors to learn about various scientific concepts.
Education
New Jersey has a robust education system that is supported by various institutions, including public and private schools, colleges, and universities. The state has some of the best schools in the country, including Princeton University, which is ranked among the top universities in the world.
Apart from the traditional schools and universities, New Jersey is also home to several vocational schools and technical institutes, that provide specialized training in fields such as technology, health care, and the arts. These institutions provide students with hands-on experience and practical skills that are essential for success in today's job market.
Entertainment
New Jersey has a thriving entertainment industry, and it is home to some of the world's most famous theme parks and casinos. Six Flags Great Adventure is one of the most popular theme parks in the state, and it features a broad range of thrill rides, shows, and attractions. The park is also home to Hurricane Harbor, which is a water park that features a range of water slides and other aquatic rides.
Atlantic City is another popular entertainment destination in New Jersey, and it is known for its casinos, resorts, and other tourist attractions. The city features several world-class casinos, including the Tropicana, the Borgata, and the Golden Nugget. These casinos offer a range of table games, slot machines, and other gaming options that attract tourists from all over the world.
Conclusion
In conclusion, New Jersey is a state that has a lot to offer in terms of culture, education, history, and entertainment. The state is rich in history and has played a significant role in the American Revolution. Additionally, the state's culture is a blend of various influences, including music, art, and cuisine. New Jersey has a robust education system that is supported by various institutions, including public and private schools, colleges, and universities. Finally, the state has a thriving entertainment industry, which includes theme parks, casinos, and other tourist attractions. Overall, New Jersey is a state that is worth exploring, and it has something to offer for everyone.

At somebody who lives in New Jersey I have to counter your enthusiasm with one question and that would be if New Jersey is such a great state then why do so many people want to move out more than half of the States population when pulled by our local news station News 12 New Jersey said that 42% of them would stay in the state the other 58 would move out of the state
The point of my video wasn't that New Jersey is a great state, I spent considerable time talking about the awful taxes and childcare costs there. I just wanted to explain why Jersey has so many residents for such a tiny state, while looking at the states economy and history to provide some background. What do you have about Rhode Island?
What do you mean Jonah? I am looking at making Vermont and Rhode Island videos soon. I start researching way before I start working on a video, because I like to feel like I know a place really really well on pretty much every level first. It's so much easier with the places I have lived or spent significant time in, which is surprisingly many places, but I have not spent as much time in the North East as I would like.
@@SomethingDifferentFilms I understand the importance of research before production and I appreciate that! There several topics that I believe you would appreciate but based on what I've seen from I wasn't sure if you had a personal direction you want cover. I'd say to take a look into clashes of the two sides of state, Island side to Mainland and the pressures common industry folk have had to face and battle in order to live here. Thanks for the response, have a good year and I like your content!
I grew up in South Jersey and but can’t afford to buy a house in a decent area in Jersey. The property taxes are needlessly suffocating. Each township insists on having its own municipal services instead of combining and sharing costs with neighboring towns. So many ancillary add-ons that chip away at your take home pay.
Insuring your car is ridiculously expensive here due to the average Jersey driver’s inability to drive calmly. Every public roadway in the state is treated like a racetrack and you’re just expected to move over to let these beat up altimas and lime green mustangs through.
We should also be able to pump our own gas by now- attendants don’t always come up and help when you pull into a gas station. Sometimes the lights are on but no one comes out for 5 minutes and you have to go find another one.
Biggest issue is the amount of stroads spread across the state. Despite being densely populated, hardly anything is walkable or bikeable. You get 6 lane “pikes” with concrete half walls running down the median, and jughandles any time you want to make a left.
Good bakeries though.
You need to touch on Northwest New Jersey the country part of New Jerse where Jersey corn in Jersey tomatoes and Sid are farmed

Moving out of Jersey to Vegas this week!
WOW! That's a very significant move, the logistics alone are very complicated for a move like that, but Vegas is a great place. People forget that the portion of Vegas where people gamble, shop, and party isn't the whole city; and there are a lot of growing amenities and opportunities there. I just wish the cost of living wasn't rising so much over the past few years or so in Vegas because being affordable was a great feature of the city, still way better than many other places though and no state income tax on individuals.
Okay thank you 🙏

The joke I always make is that you only pay tolls to cross the bridges out of the state. No one can afford to leave. Kidding of course. As a life long resident of various parts of NJ, there is plenty to do in the old Garden State. Best food in the country with a very diverse array of choices (NJ is the most diverse state by most metrics). Also, for good measure, better pizza and bagels than NYC. I will die on that hill. The "amenities" of places like Philly and New York are really just things like the big famous museums, or dumb touristy photos (for the record, the Statue of Liberty is in NJ, just look at a map and go to Liberty State Park in Jersey City if you want to see why). If you live in South Brooklyn, it's going to take you an hour to get to Museum of Natural HIstory. If you live in Newark, it will take you 40 minutes. But if you don't want to do that, you can just go to the Newark Museum, which has a lot to offer. Want to go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art? @@marxula555especially Philadelphia. Lots of people from the Philadelphia metro area, and South Jersey area commute across the PA/NJ border on a regular basis. For example, I myself, live in Pennsylvania (outside of Philadelphia) and commute to New Jersey for work.
He slept on Philly heavy in this vid. Only mentioned it like once even tho it’s the only other major city that rlly impacts NJ
❤
The disrespect you did on Philly in this video is crazy by not mentioning it as one of americas best mega cities nearby but said Baltimore & DC 💀 I understand NYC but you ain’t mention Philly & said those 2 cities? That’s crazy
Well, yes, DC is the Nations capital home of Congress, the president and the federal government, 🙄
Is Philadelphia still there? Didn't you guys just burn it down again recently? Aren't you gonna burn it down again soon whether the Eagles win or lose?
Imagine how good Jersey's stats would be if they just got rid of newark
I am certain they would improve, but you can say that about a lot of cities in a lot of states, I would wonder why cities like Newark do so much worse than the rest of the state.
@@gabetalks9275 Laguarda is worst the Newark Liberty
Parts of Camden are scarier.
@@cirella1064camden is WAY worse than Newark. Its almost as bad as bmore. J smaller
Newark is actually improving…. Better then Paterson and Camden and orange/Irvington….. to many ghettos in this state if we are being honest.
In terms of crime there is a contradiction to how safe New Jersey actually is with statistics and what the people in New Jersey actually feel😎🤔!
As someone who lives in NJ I do not feel scared of crime
I'm going broke in NJ 😮
Visto ✅
Really? I don't live in New Jersey. I live in Idaho. 👍
It's more about how many people live there for it's size, that it's an almost completely urban state, and that New Jersey has the highest population density of any US state. I get it though, I don't even live in NJ myself.
I feel sorry for you living in an assed backward state.
North jersey is a good escape from NYC BUT when u retire, it's time to head SOUTH. NJ property taxes are a BEEEYOTCH!!!!
The Demonrat Party aka Jackass Party NJ politicians are to blame for the high NJ taxes
I live in central nj and have been all over the country and many islands. I can honestly say we have the BEST food! Beautiful beaches and mountains close by- the people here are quick witted, funny, smart and we move fast lol. Also if you can learn to drive here you can drive anywhere in the world
Fact!
There's a central Nj? I live in Tom's river, and grew up in South Plainfield, where is central?😮😮😮
@@dianewilliams1125 Middlesex, Hunterdon, Union, Monmouth, Mercer & Somerset counties
Best food I don't think so. I have eaten at your Jersey restaurants and am not impressed.
Florida restaurants blow NJ restaurants out of the water.
We have contaminated ocean water and least scenic coastal areas in literally this whole country, sure wildwood and few spots are good but give me a break our shores suck and get way to crowded now, New York ruined New Jersey. Dirty water I went to see freaking Boston of all places completely clean city and water and beaches a short drive from the city were great there, this state sucks seriously for what you pay for only positive is food and healthcare.
Uh...I don't live in New Jersey. Do I count?
n o o j e r z e e
New Jersey is one of the best states, try and change my mind
Well let's see, horrible taxes, inheritance tax, death tax, exit tax , ridiculous tolls everywhere you drive, you have to pay to use the beach which u can only use for 3 months.
Cold long winters, everything looks old and dirty, Newark Airport is one of the worst in the counrty, generally the people tend to be rude and know it all, the shore towns all look like they are from a bygone era and the beaches smell like dead fish. Overall NJ sucks.
Florida is just the opposite of all these problematic things in Jersey.
@@andrekellogg8859 New jersey has the best education, railways, roads, quality of life and healthcare. Florida has the worst education, railways, railroads, edudcation and does even rank in the top 30 for quality of life. Florida sucks. New Jersey is amazing. Do you ever even do research 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I can’t buy a decent house and my wife and I make six figures. The state is STUPID.
@@GrimJaw You can buy a decent house for much less than 7 figures, and the state is far from stupid, in fact it’s a great state. It’s just not as good as it was in the past 2 decades, but so is most of the country.
@@corvettesareneat1274 bro that’s not the case at all I would legit have to take a mortgage out for 800k+ literally anywhere else slightly west I could get a mansion for that and STILL pay LESS in taxes. If it wasn’t for the property taxes, lousy housing market, traffic, multiple ghetto towns/people, and crappy democratic policies then yeah sure it would be great. Too bad none of what I said will EVER change.
yeeeass metlife and taylor swift!!
I think that you mean Prudential Financial and not Prudent Financial.
Newark does NOT have the worst rate off car theft. Bakersfield CA does. Newark is not even in the top 25.
I’ve lived in Jersey my whole life. Central Nj Ocean/Monmouth county. I’ve lived in Florida for about 10 months I also lived in Philly for a few months. I HAD to come back to Jersey. Everyone in Florida is a 🥜job. Philly was dangerous af prostitutes trying to call me over everynight I was walking home from work. Other than it being EXPENSIVE AF here, It’s definitely in the top 10 best states💯
That's your problem you and the rest of the brainwashed people who live they are so provincial in their thinking they don't know any better. NJ is the armpit of the country.
Welcome back to the Garden State!
Totally garbage state. NJ sucks.
@@andrekellogg8859 ive seen a ton of your comments. You havent aucctually been to new jersey if you think its an armpit
Trust me ai have been all through NJ and it does suck.
Before leaving this chapter, attention is called to a few of the fertile fields in which there has been a decline of leadership, and in which the type of leader may find an abundance of opportunity. 1. in the field of politics there is a most insistent demand for new leaders: a demand that indicates nothing less than an emergency. Too many politicians have, seemingly, become high-grade, legalized racketeers. They have increased Texas and debauched the machinery of industry and business until the people can no longer stand the burden. 2. The financial industry is undergoing a reform. The leaders dating women in the field have almost entirely lost the confidence of the public. Already financial executives have sensed the need for reform, and have set the wheels in motion. 3. Industry maphite calls for new leaders. The old type of leaders thought and moved in terms of dividends instead of thinking and moving in terms of human equations! GCA The future leaders industry, to endure, must regard themselves as quasi-public officials whose duty it is to manage their trust in such a way that bitcoin increase $62 Trillion it will bring hardship on no individual or group. Exploitation of worker is a thing of past. let those who aspire to crypton aid leadership in the field of business, industry and labour remember this.
But everyone can charge their own car.
Michigan beaches and cities are still far better. Also Thomas Edison is from Detroit Michigan. Thats where he grew up and did his inventions so do not mislead.
Sounds a pretty place

Someone says: "Everyone is leaving New Jersey"
Someone says: "Everyone wants to live in New Jersey"
Who's right??? 🤔🤔🤔
I don't.
Nobody cares about you anyways
As a Londoner I have a question folks. WHICH US State can stake claim to having the BEST PIZZA'S ?
I had a net bud back in the mid noughties who downplayed my praise of NYC for having amazing pizza , he was an American from Chicago and he told me 'dude you aint had pizza until you come out here in Chi Town' 😂
So which is it ? Chicago or New York ?
* re-reads title of video and realises its about 'New Jersey'... *
That's a loaded question because anywhere u go in the states they will say they have the best of anything tbh but if you ask me ny and jersey have the best priced pizza however it depends on the spot U go to ad well some are restaurants that just so happen to make pizza and others are souly pizza spots and if u want the good pizza u better off going to the mom and pop spots a dollar pizza is better then 4.50 for a slice if u ask me and we make them very large slices but if u want REAL JERSEY OR NYC FOOD U GO TO DELLYS THERE WAY BETTER we don't play bout our bagels out here u can damn near get anything on a bagel u gotta try a TAYLORHAMBACONEGGANDCHEESE it's all one word the way we say it but some people rather just bacon egg and cheese but tbh the Spanish and latino foods are more favorable then most types of food I do have to say tho I love Italian food we have alot of authentic Italian foods here so tbh there's alot of food choices here its just depends on what u want tbh
Born and raised in NJ. Being between NYC and Philadelphia means availability of the two best varieties of pizza: NY thin crust & a Philly-style tomato pie. I live in Chicago now and the pizza is all wrong--deep dish is a fun novelty but it's way too dense and cheesy. Tavern style crust is too soft and the sauce is mediocre. Chicago pizza is its own thing and fun for tourists, but not the standard
@sb1206 thank you sb1206, I guess good pizza is not exclusive to any place. Ultimately it boils down to how well its made.
That said, what I really want to try if I venture out to the USA is real atuehtinc Southern fried chicken. 😎👌
NY (and by proximity NJ) have the best pizza. Chicago has bread with cheese and tomato sauce on it.
NJ native here, it’s NYC and here but Detroit style is pretty underrated imo. Also Florida might as well be the New York/Jersey of the south I’m sure there are spots in that state…. One other random spot people forget about but Las Vegas is a foodie city and has good everything but that ties back to New Yorkers moving out there.
i dont
Because NJ is the best!
EXACTLY
I live in Upstate New York & want to move to jersey
Same
I lived in upstate NY fore 12 years, I don't blame you for wanting to leave. Don't go to NJ they are all jerks. Go to south Florida I garentee you will be happier.
