  • How to 3D-Model a Trammel of Archimedes in Fusion 360 | 3D Print a Do-Nothing Machine
    By the end of this video, you’ll know how to create a Trammel of Archimedes in Fusion 360. The Trammel of Archimedes is a mechanism that generates the shape of an ellipse.
    Some have even coined the machines to be the “do-nothing machine” as their pretty pointless [pun intended] when they have a knob on the end. Usually, they have a pencil or knife attached to the end so one can draw, scribe, or cut an ellipse into a surface underneath.
    These are great little projects for woodworking or 3D printing, and kids seem to love them, so I thought this would be a fun object to model in Fusion 360.

    I'm using F360 for the first time to create a specific part to 3D print. As an intermediate 3D modeler with a lot of experience with 3D printers, I'm pretty up to speed with a lot of the concepts used in CAD modeling. After 2-3 days into this project, I'm finding it much quicker and more informative to just watch one of your videos that seem like they would cover the F360 function that I'm struggling with rather than go onto the community forums and search for answers. Inevitably I learn a better way to approach something that I've already cobbled together and have restarted my project several times to fix things along the way. Thanks for putting up such concise and well-explained videos. I'm still watching at 1.75 or 2x speed (with liberal use of the pause button), but it's so nice not to have to click through all of the exposition that is present in so many of the other tutorial videos.

    • @ProductDesignOnline
      @ProductDesignOnline  Před 5 lety +1

      Thanks, F. S.! I'm glad you enjoyed this video. In regards to your sign, you'll want to just be aware of how each additional piece (letter, heart, etc) is created as far as bodies and components. I'd recommend watching my video on the difference between bodies vs components - czcams.com/video/46UNmpQdbVc/video.html
      You can simply create sketches of the letters and shapes on top of the wood board and then you can extrude them to your desired thickness.
      One key thing to remember is to also label or rename each body or component as you create the parts. That will help you should you need to hide, delete, or copy parts. Cheers, Kevin :)

    I am teaching myself Fusion 360, and stumbled upon your channel. You have a great way of teaching so that anyone can follow along. The only issue I am having is that my Fusion doesnt seem to follow along exactly the same way that yours does. I realize this is a fairly old video, and that is most likely the cause, but specifically when you are creating the arm portion, my fusion looks completely different. This is creating some confusion. I just realized that this is probably a pretty pointless comment as well, since i dont even really know what to ask to get a better understanding. First thing i guess is that when i create a different component and select it, all of my other components become almost invisible.

      "First thing i guess is that when i create a different component and select it, all of my other components become almost invisible."
      This is normal and a setting in your Preferences that you can change if you don't like it. It's mainly due to help you work on multi-part assemblies so you can see what parts of the design are active. Activate the top-level component in the Browser to see everything with full visibility.

      To answer your question - when you copy and paste a component you risk one getting altered in a different way than the others. When you insert a component or design file into a current design, you'll see that they are all linked back to that file. This way, the components will all remain exactly the same unless you decide to "break" the link and alter one. This Autodesk help article will explain this concept more in detail - knowledge.autodesk.com/support/fusion-360/learn-explore/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/How-to-Insert-a-Component-into-the-Current-Design-in-Fusion-360.html

    • @ProductDesignOnline
      @ProductDesignOnline  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi, Ziad. Unfortunately, the Animation capabilities in Fusion 360 are still pretty limited. Here are some notes from the Autodesk site (this explains it better than I can off the top of my head):
      The Animation workspace does not currently recognize joint constraints and will require you to move every piece individually. The idea to allow the Animation workspace to register joint constraints and animate them has been presented on the Fusion 360 Ideastation.
      While the motion study will allow you to create a rendered animation (through the Render workspace), the joint motion is limited by the motion study definitions.
      Another option could be to create a motion link between your joints and then create a screencast of you dragging the joints to show the motion in a video. This will not give as clean a video as the Animation or rendered motion study options, but it may allow you to animate your model without using a motion study or manually moving every piece in the Animation workspace.
      In summary, if you do decide to do the Animation workspace, you would have to set it up to do piece by piece which would be pretty difficult with this Trammel design. Cheers, Kevin :)

      Hi, rk57chat. In short, the animation workspace does not allow the motion to be played like the Design workspace.

    When I right-click on the top-level component, I get a "New Component" window and I type in "Slider". What appears is just like the video. Selecting the right face works, but then immediately it de-selects the slider objects and makes the track the selected object. Now I can't work on the slider. It insists that I work on the track, and even makes the tab for the slider disappear on the left hand side of the screen. I wonder what is going on. Bug? Different procedure for this version of F360? Did I mess up the timeline somehow? Anyone else experiencing this? I listened to the video several times and followed the procedure, and I still can't get it to offset off the underlying track, but put the lines in the slider component. I try again to create a slider component because the left-hand side of the screen shows no slider, and this time it says, "Slider(2)". So it thinks a Slider component is still there, or it wouldn't have put the "(2)" at the end. ??? I should also add that the track image gets transparent right when I choose slider on the left-hand tree. From 9:35 he goes SelectFace - "O" - SelectFace again. Right after hitting the "O" the tree deselects the Slider and now the Track is the active component. Is there some setting that I'm using that is different that would cause this behavior?

    I tried following this and, despite the changes to the UI, seem to have got everything right so it would print. However, one of the Revolute joints is not right. When I animate the joint, it rotates correctlly, but when I animate the model, the arm seems to rotate and move as it should and one slider moves and follows the track, but the other slider stays put although the reference flag, selected from the hole in the slider, moves and follows the track. It's as if the reference point has the Slider joint set up but it isn't moving the Slider object. I've tried deleting and recreating this joint several times, but I'm obviously not selecting something correctly? Suggestions?

    I'm so confused by this tutorial. Your toolbar is completely different from mine. I don't have a sketch dropdown. Hell, I don't even have "model" as an option. Only design. Did Autodesk change the program since the making of this video or am I doing something wrong? I'm specifically looking for the slot function and it is nowhere to be found. Pls help

    • @ProductDesignOnline
      @ProductDesignOnline  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Andrew. The August 2019 update changed some of the terminology and location of things. For example, the model workspace was renamed "Design".
      With the new UI you'll find the "Slot" command in the "Create" dropdown, but ONLY when you're in the SKETCH tab. The sketch tab will only be shown in your toolbar when you're in an active sketch environment.
      Alternatively, you can search for the text feature by using the keyboard letter "S" to activate the shortcuts box > search for the desired feature.
      Here's a video I made covering these critical changes - czcams.com/video/tuZzHcmFtg4/video.html

    Why is the Sketch dropdown gone? Who rearranged things and for what reason?

    • @ProductDesignOnline
      @ProductDesignOnline  Před 3 lety

      They introduce contextual tabs as they've expanded the number of workspaces in environments that Fusion 360 has. Trust me, from a tutorial standpoint it has been frustrating for me as well. However, from usability standpoints I have been loving the changes and progress of the UI :)

      @@ProductDesignOnline Thanks for your response. I had some heated discussions at home with a family member over what's better and your comment settled the debate. It can be frustrating for new users to spend time trying to figure out whether they aren't following the tutorials correctly, or Autodesk did the 'ol software switcheroo and a Google search is necessary to find a forum post somewhere which gives the new procedure.
      Thanks a ton for these videos. Appreciated.

    Hello, I’m having trouble copying and pasting the slider. If I copy the slider and then paste, the object is not visible... somethings I’ve tried: copying and pasting an active component and copying and pasting the inactive component.
    Do you have any suggestions other than starting from scratch?

    • @ProductDesignOnline
      @ProductDesignOnline  Před 4 lety

      Hi, Andrew. Try making the top-level component active. Then right-click the slider component to select copy. Then, see if you can right-click on the top-level component and select "paste new".
      If that doesn't work, it could be several things...could you paste a link to a screenshot or quick screencast? (Google drive, dropbox, snipboard.io). That will help me determine what's going wrong. You definitely shouldn't have to start over from scratch. Cheers, Kevin :)

      Ok, everything is working now and I would like to print this. Is there an easy way to lay all of the components out on the grid so I don't have to break them apart in the slicer?

    • @ProductDesignOnline
      @ProductDesignOnline  Před 4 lety +1

      @@33andrewsalamak94 Hi Andrew. There's no automatic way to lay out all of the components in Fusion 360. You can use the "Move/Copy" command. The other method, which I prefer, is to export your component's STL directly to your slicer. Right-click on the component > Check "Send to Print Utility" > Select your slicer (if not in list select Custom and select the app on your computer) > This will place the part right in your slicer. You can then export the other ones directly to your slicer (same build plate). Cheers, Kevin :)

    Ok so I figured out my trackpad finally. light double touch gets the menu box up that you get when you right click. The irony of it. All this time and I find out the day before I get my new mouse. Grrrrr. Ok so heres the weird one. I go to slot command the very same as you and then after giving it width 14mm and pressing ok plus extrude, the arm appears on the same level as the base of the sliders. Not above them as it does with you. Have tried loads to rectify but no solution. Deleted it 3 times and then gone back to copy you in the video but every time this happens. Grrrrr

    • @ProductDesignOnline
      @ProductDesignOnline  Před 4 lety

      Hi, James. Trackpads are tricky (and annoying) with CAD... I hope your mouse arrives soon if it hasn't already :)
      In regards to the slot command not working, make sure after activating the slot command that you click on the top of the yellow slider. You'll also want to double-check that you have the "Arm" component created and activated. If your Slot component is activated then it may be defaulting to the bottom surface.
      Other than that, it's hard to say without seeing your file. Let me know if you get it working, otherwise, if you share your file I'll take a look. Cheers, Kevin :)

      @@jamesbarratt593 Sweet! That's great news. I would suggest leaving it set up by default for now (while you get adjusted to it). Then, as I mentioned before, you can assign the side buttons to be "hotkeys" for your most-used commands. Cheers, Kevin :)

    All the god damn components, not active, are ghosted on my screen!!!!! What the hell did you do to make all components not ghosted while you have Arm active? I am about to take a baseball bat to my computer!!! I cannot google or find anything to switch them on and now what should be a 10-minute tutorial has my head ready to f-ing explode!!! The default is the ghost all non-active parts. You are doing a beginner tutorial. You have Arm active yet all the components are visible (look active) as if you had the top part of the assembly selected!!!! Therefore you must have turned on some function switched on that I cannot find! Maybe when you do something non-standard in a beginner tutorial you start out by telling your students what you did to get there!

    • @ProductDesignOnline
      @ProductDesignOnline  Před 5 lety

      Hi, ctbram0627. If you're having a problem, just ask. No need to get upset.
      This was actually a bug that occurred while I was recording. When I re-activated the arm component the rest of the components should have been ghosted.
      This is however a setting that you can turn on and off in your preferences. Click your username in the upper righthand corner > Preferences > Design > Turn Off the "Show ghosted result body" (third from the bottom) > restart your Fusion 360.
      Cheers, Kevin :)
