    I made these today and they turned out perfect 👌...I subbed out the grand marnier for orange juice in the filling and I swapped out the cardamom in the dough for a dash of allspice and a dash of cinnamon just because my son doesn't like cardamom...they turned out perfect so now I can stop paying $3.50 for 20 of those tiny store ones that are filled with corn syrup...thank you Haniela 👍🙂

      I'd add little bit of fresh orange juice, Orange juice works great with whole grain flours, it cuts down on slightly bitter taste, plus you need to add more moisture if using these flours, as they absorb more moisture than regular all purpose flour.

    • @Hanielas
      @Hanielas  Před 9 lety +2

      Hello, you can use just water, that's fine. Or maybe use some freshly squeezed orange juice. Alcohol adds extra layer of flavor. It gets completely cooked off so there is no alcohol in the filling .

    whats a good replacement?

    • @Hanielas
      @Hanielas  Před 8 lety +1

      +sisi sisita Yes just use white sugar and you can omit cardamom, no problem. You can use water instead of alcohol or use some orange juice.

    • @SailorBarsoom
      @SailorBarsoom Před 7 lety

      Brown sugar is basically white sugar with a bit of molasses in it. So, if you can get molasses, you can use a bit of that with white sugar to get the same taste.
      Cardamom is something I like in some things and not in others. So I'd be willing to try newtons with it, but I'm sure I'd like them without it too.

    • @Hanielas
      @Hanielas  Před 9 lety +2

      Thank you for letting me know. Sure you can freeze them. Here is what I would do : layer cookies onto the baking sheet as if you were to bake them, space them out really closely together, cover baking sheet with plastic wrap. Freeze, once cookies are frozen, put them into a freeze safe container, layer them, put wax paper between layers.Then when ready to bake them. Take them out put them on the baking sheet, I'd probably let them sit at room temperature for a little bit before baking them off. Good luck and Merry Christmas.

    well, here's a question I'm not sure anyone can answer, but I'll try! :-)
    my dad gifted me with a fig tree. I would love to use it's fruit for this recipe to gift him back with some cookies in the future. I saw that you used what looked like a somewhat "dried" fig, and though fresh figs off the tree LOOK the same, they actually have quite a bit more moisture in them as they are picked when they are plumply ripe. my question is, how much do you think that might affect the recipe? any thoughts? or do you think I should try to dry, or dehydrate mine? my tree gave me dozens of figs last year (it's first year!), so I expect quite a bit more this coming season! so I have til spring/summer to figure it out! haha
    thank you for all the time you put into your blog, and youtube videos. this gal is grateful. :-)

    • @Hanielas
      @Hanielas  Před 9 lety +1

      kindredcottagelife Hello, I think you should be fine using fresh figs. Here is what I'd do. Wash them, cut the stems, chop them up like I did in the video(minus cut finger lol).I'd even add the same amount of rest of the ingredients. I'd simmer it and in case there is too too much liquid I'd take of the lid for a little bit to cook off the excess liquid. Then puree and enjoy. Fig puree is quite delicious. I was actually thinking of using it in the bread I'm planning to make.
