I made these today and they turned out perfect 👌...I subbed out the grand marnier for orange juice in the filling and I swapped out the cardamom in the dough for a dash of allspice and a dash of cinnamon just because my son doesn't like cardamom...they turned out perfect so now I can stop paying $3.50 for 20 of those tiny store ones that are filled with corn syrup...thank you Haniela 👍🙂
That is awesome. I'm so glad you like them. I will try them with cinnamon too.
How did you prepare it in the recipe, do the portions not come in weights ???

One word, Yummy😋😍
This is a really good recipe and you solved a question for me I've always been wondering why Fig Newtons had a little bit of a Tangy taste I think it may be the orange zest and I think that's why
Keep up the good work Haniela, fight the good fight, love captain figroll, king of the junkies, drinker of the druids, father of the illegitimate.
I love Figolu (French biscuits like this)

Ron M ooh lol I'm a seasoned wounded kitchen warrior..I'm just treating 2 nasty kitchen burns. Hope you try these out, they are delicious.
yay!
thank u 😘👍🏻
Hi!! Your recipe looks so yummy, I'm definitely making it this week! I have a question, are they supposed to be crunchy or tender? Thank u!
It’s supposed to be soft like cake
I have fig pieces in a bag that came from commodities. Wanted to know what I could cook them in. So going to try this.
Excellent, let me know how it goes.
I don't have orange liquere or dark rum, but perhaps orange juice will work? I am going to give it a try.
Can you use shop bought pastry?
Haniela's Thank you so much. I just used dates instead of figs. They turned out perfectly. I'm going to share this with all my family and friends thank you.
That is wonderful. Thank you. I'm thinking I'll try them with dates too and I'll add some ground walnuts to the filling. Thank you.
Haniela's your welcome have a great day.
I love fig roll.
+Naomi Haugh324 Me too.
Can I use fresh figs for this recipe?
Thanks for sharing this Haniela. Could you suggest changes in the dough, if we were to use Whole Wheat flour and Oats flour.
I'd add little bit of fresh orange juice, Orange juice works great with whole grain flours, it cuts down on slightly bitter taste, plus you need to add more moisture if using these flours, as they absorb more moisture than regular all purpose flour.
Thanks for your suggestion. I would definitely try it out !
Jayel Vyas You are welcome.
Can i add stevia powder instead of white sugar ?
One of my favorite cookies .... hope your finger feels better.
Thanks you Susan. Finger has since healed but now I have a nasty burn to deal with. Kitchen can be such a dangerous place sometimes.
Aww... feel better :) ... and yes the kitchen is a dangerous place .. had my fair share of cuts and burns.
Even though I don't like figs (Love dates - Can I use those?) I am very tempted to try those cookies.
Sure thing, I've made them with different dry fruits before. they are yummy.
Nice one, I try it you did it simple for us beginners, I hope your ok with your hurt finger
+Romina Micallef Thanks Romina, finger healed perfectly.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
thank you for sharing ! Im thinking of adding apple and strawberry to the fig.
Can you substitute the alcohol with water, or does it need something else?
Hello, you can use just water, that's fine. Or maybe use some freshly squeezed orange juice. Alcohol adds extra layer of flavor. It gets completely cooked off so there is no alcohol in the filling .
Can u tell me please whats cardamom?
hi plz i just wanna ask u..in my country we dont have brown sugar! so can i use white sugar? and about cardamom! i dont like it! is that okey if i didnt use it? and its needs orange liqueur, which is alcoholic.
whats a good replacement?
+sisi sisita Yes just use white sugar and you can omit cardamom, no problem. You can use water instead of alcohol or use some orange juice.
Brown sugar is basically white sugar with a bit of molasses in it. So, if you can get molasses, you can use a bit of that with white sugar to get the same taste.
Cardamom is something I like in some things and not in others. So I'd be willing to try newtons with it, but I'm sure I'd like them without it too.
Haniela's: does the orange juice need to have no pulp?
It looks delicious. Would you please give me the ingredients so I can make them myself. Thank you.
In the description
I bake them today, came out delicious :) Have a question though, can I make them ahead of time and freeze them before baking? I want to make a lot for Christmas presents :)
Thank you for letting me know. Sure you can freeze them. Here is what I would do : layer cookies onto the baking sheet as if you were to bake them, space them out really closely together, cover baking sheet with plastic wrap. Freeze, once cookies are frozen, put them into a freeze safe container, layer them, put wax paper between layers. Then when ready to bake them. Take them out put them on the baking sheet, I'd probably let them sit at room temperature for a little bit before baking them off. Good luck and Merry Christmas.
can I use fresh figs?
Sure, I don't see why not.
Is it possible to use fresh figs?
Sure, just make sure the fig filling is thick like a paste. You'll probably won't need as much liquid to start with.
@@Hanielas Thank you! :D
how macuh flour and suger you used please?
+lubnan hassn recipe is in the description, under the video.
well, here's a question I'm not sure anyone can answer, but I'll try! :-)
my dad gifted me with a fig tree. I would love to use it's fruit for this recipe to gift him back with some cookies in the future. I saw that you used what looked like a somewhat "dried" fig, and though fresh figs off the tree LOOK the same, they actually have quite a bit more moisture in them as they are picked when they are plumply ripe. my question is, how much do you think that might affect the recipe? any thoughts? or do you think I should try to dry, or dehydrate mine? my tree gave me dozens of figs last year (it's first year!), so I expect quite a bit more this coming season! so I have til spring/summer to figure it out! haha
thank you for all the time you put into your blog, and youtube videos. this gal is grateful. :-)
kindredcottagelife Hello, I think you should be fine using fresh figs. Here is what I'd do. Wash them, cut the stems, chop them up like I did in the video(minus cut finger lol).I'd even add the same amount of rest of the ingredients. I'd simmer it and in case there is too too much liquid I'd take of the lid for a little bit to cook off the excess liquid. Then puree and enjoy. Fig puree is quite delicious. I was actually thinking of using it in the bread I'm planning to make.
Haniela's and THATS why they pay you the big bucks.
LOL
WONDERFUL answer, just reduce it!!! so simple, AND YET, never occurred to me! hahaha
thank you so much!!! now I cant wait to try it! so glad I found you and your wonderful blog with all these youtube videos!!!!
:-)
ME PUEDES PASAR LA RECETA EN ESPAÑOL POR FAVOR
Can you make an apple version of this?? I was never a big fan of fig newtons but I loved the apple ones as a kid but I can never find them anymore. Thanks! Love your channel Hani!!
+boss6sr I haven't thought if that but I think you could use dry apples to make it? Or maybe just cook down the apples until they have very little moisture in them, or even applesauce. It has to be quite dense to make the filling
Hi.can u give me a substitute for alcohol
Hm, I wounder if flavored soda would be a good substitute, or oil based flavorings mixed with water.
Sorry about your finger but it did add some iron to the confection!
Hello, the recipe sounds good, but you do not give weights of the ingredients neither here nor on your website.
I hate Fig's but love Fig Newton's Im odd. Found a fig tree sprouting in the back yard going to let it grow maybe someday I will learn to like them.
I don't really like figs on its own but I love these cookies. Filling is so addictive, I can eat it alone it is so good.
Can I skip the liquor or substitute something else for it? As a Muslim, I cannot consume Alcohol in any shape or form.
You can skip it and use water instead. Or if you have a fruit juice that could be used as substitute.
Oh dried figs I've got a fig tree and fresh figs 😔
You can use fresh figs, too.
@@Hanielas I'm on other video learning how to oven dry figs 😃 then I'm coming back to you 😃👍
fig newtons cookies commirchiel is disturbing enoghth
necesito las cantidades en español
The filling looks like poop with seeds in it :p
You forgot to say the best tasting "poop" ;-)
Haniela's haha yes of course
itsmekirsten x Lol
Cam Newton? More like Fig Newton amirite?
I noticed you kept calling them "cookies." Don't you know that a cookie is a cookie but a Newton is fruit and cake?
