    Aphrodite is an ancient Greek goddess associated with love, beauty, pleasure, passion and procreation. She was syncretized with the Roman goddess Venus. Aphrodite's major symbols include myrtles, roses, doves, sparrows, and swans. The cult of Aphrodite was largely derived from that of the Phoenician goddess Astarte, a cognate of the East Semitic goddess Ishtar, whose cult was based on the Sumerian cult of Inanna. Aphrodite's main cult centers were Cythera, Cyprus, Corinth, and Athens. Her main festival was the Aphrodisia, which was celebrated annually in midsummer.
    In Hesiod's Theogony, Aphrodite is born off the coast of Cythera from the foam (αφρός aphrós) produced by Uranus's genitals, which his son Cronus has severed and thrown into the sea. In Homer's Iliad, however, she is the daughter of Zeus and Dione. Plato, in his Symposium 180e, asserts that these two origins actually belong to separate entities: Aphrodite Ourania (a transcendent, "Heavenly" Aphrodite) and Aphrodite Pandemos (Aphrodite common to "all the people"). Aphrodite had many other epithets, each emphasizing a different aspect of the same goddess, or used by a different local cult. Thus she was also known as Cytherea (Lady of Cythera) and Cypris (Lady of Cyprus), because both locations claimed to be the place of her birth.

      @@TinyEpics Hi.. just wanted to know.. where did u get the source tht Venus was born in Cyprus and is associated with ancient Eastern civilisation goddesses like Ishtar and Innana and predating even the greek civilization.

      That was my own hypothesis as I know that the Greek gods and goddesses all have roots in older divinities… specifically those from the Near East. Though of course the Hellenic gods became their own thing. And after I made that video I realized sources say she was “born on Cythera and wafted to Cyprus”. I edited that out in this updated video on Aphrodite.

      One book that I read recently was “Minoan Kingship and the Solar Goddess”. In it, the author Nanno Marinatos compares the Minoans on Crete with the Near Eastern cultures which surrounded them. And I have the feeling that those Bronze Age Cretan dieties helped give rise to the later Hellenic gods and goddesses. It’s a bit complicated but really interesting to go back long before the classical Greek world and kind of take a glimpse at where this complex mythology began. Hope that helps!

    Perhaps only one side of Venus. Perhaps the justice side is Athenic. Apply it to the zodiac. She goes in virgo to analyse, then balance the scales in Libra. She can, if necessary turn into Scorpio, whose anger is stopped by the kindness is Sagittarius. That's one path.

It is also considered to be the power of mother goddess.... (the purity in planet venus)

      @krift1716 Před 3 lety +2

      I think it would be better to cast a Greek woman as Aphrodite, instead of being a hypocrite and continue commericialising and politicising someone else's culture. Then someday black people can make a movie about black mythology or folklore and cast FKA twigs in that. Aphrodite literally means from the sea foam, and she was described as white and shining. The hypocritical impulsion for modern americanised society to take thousands of years old European mythology and fuck with it, like it's a fanfiction of some meaningless cartoon, is so disrespectful, hypocritical, (and not to mention patronising to brown people (who have their own ignored mythologies to draw from). Then you pat yourselves on the shoulder for cutting the people from their own myths. Like the "Saami" inspired people in Frozen 2 and countless more in America and Britain. It's gross when it happens to Egyptian mythology, but sweet and cool when it happens to the Greeks, who have been occupied, oppressed and massacred for hundreds of years. If Mulan can have a full asian cast, then movies about white myth and folklore can have full European cast, and native american movies can have full tribal cast, and so on. If you want to prove that no race has no entitlement to another's culture, that would be the best and only way to do it.

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I can see your point in some instances. Look, I think it all comes down to intention. Is something created with respect and knowledge of its subject, or just to make money? That makes all the difference.
      Lana del Rey wearing an important Native American ceremonial headdress because she thinks it looks cool and sexy in a music video is a good example of poor taste and judgement.
      But an independent film on ancient archetypes like the goddess of love Inanna/Ishtar/Isis/Astarte/Aphrodite/Venus?
      Sure, why not? She is a frequency. An energy. Not a specific historical figure. That is just my opinion as an artist and researcher though. I respect the fact that others will disagree.

    • @TinyEpics
      @TinyEpics  Před 3 lety +2

      One last thing: I think Greek mythology is unique in that most people in the Westen World feel that it belongs to all of us without ignoring the fact that it is specifically Hellenic with regards to its cultural expression. In English, for example, you have an incredible amount of words that stem from Greek, and American law and American culture have been largely shaped by the ancient Greek mindset, although of course in some regards it’s gone very far from it, too. Even our major government buildings are modeled after Greek temples.
      What I also tried to show in my video is how Aphrodite has been interpreted and reinterpreted over thousands of years.
      She is the Hellenized form of a much earlier divinity. In fact, you could probably trace her all the way back to Paleolithic worship if you want. Marija Gimbutas did just that.
      If you look at things this way, “ownership” of humanity’s stories is irrelevant. They belong to us all, though we honor them as having originated in their respective cultures.
      From the research I’ve done, it seems people in the ancient world, especially in the cosmopolitan Middle-Late Bronze Age world of the ancient Aegean, Levant, Egypt, Near East were quite open-minded and embraced cultural exchange. Take the Minoans and Egyptians as one example.
