If learning bass scales is making you play like BassBot, or you think theyâre just too boring to practice, youâre going about it all wrong.
But if you learn scales the right way, they actually give you a huge shortcut to making better music. In this lesson Iâll show you how to make music with any scale, including the major scale weâll learn together.
The first mistake beginners make with bass scales is trying to learn them all at once. If you take on too many scales at once youâll spread your focus way too thin.
But if you go one at a time and really get a scale in your ears, youâll not only memorize the scale, but youâll actually be able to play better bass lines, take better solos, and better understand the music you listen to.
To get you started, Iâll show you how to play the major scale, which is super super common, and foundation to a ton of the melodies and bass lines youâre familiar with.
Knowing the scale shape is just the start though. Now you need to actually make music with it. I recommend learning melodies from songs you know as a starting point, which will free you from the constraints of laying down a bass foundation so you can hear all the different notes of the scale.
But donât just read the tab. Learning melodies and bass lines that use the scale youâre learning is only really useful if you analyze what notes youâre playing. Iâll show you how to do this when youâre learning a new melody.
Now how to get this into your bass lines? Weâll drawn on wisdom from some great bassists before us and analyze a few great bass lines that use the major scale, so we can âborrowâ (read: steal) some ideas for our own lines later.
Finally weâll put it all together and try out some bass line ideas using the major scale, without sounding like BassBot.

Holy shit this has to be the best video for where I'm at.. I feel like I'm about to unlock a whole new world of confidence in jamming.
That's awesome! Hope it helps, let us know how it goes!
Yeah, I totally agree. That was *really* useful and we'll explained. And funny. Thanks!
same here I kept finding cool bass lines just by starting with the scales he was putting up never did get thru the whole video but I saved it to my bass lessons list
how is it going now?
I have been enjoying learning some basic tabs. But I felt that if I want to get the most out of my bass I need to learn this stuff so I can experiment more.
There is only so many times I can play the same basic bass lines from popular songs before that becomes boring. It's like "ahh yeah... the chain again... that's cool... anyway"
If you could also make a âhow to slapâ video on this channel that would be fantastic.

There are TOO many slap videos. I thought I'd never say that. Just practice. I used to slap my thumb on the desk in school to get my thumb conditioned.

BassBuzz should a beginner start out with a short scale or regular bass?
@@meatrocket1 Just depends on preference. If you have small hands then I'd recommend a short scale, which is what I use because of that lol
@@blubbb9208 I have pretty small hands and I learned on a full scale precision squier. I now use a full scale jazz VM 70s squier, always fine with me, definitely learn to incorporate the pinky or you definitely will struggle with small hands on a full scale bass.

Thank you!
You know, half a million English speaking bassists using internet is not a power you should underestimate.
Most people are deterred from playing bass at some point, and most people don't start with a bass as their first instrument,
Most people want to play a lead role, becoming a bassist makes that challenging.
However, we are stepping into endgame territory for music, everything seems to be some kind of fusion these days, and bass is always there.
Get creative đ
Very surprised by the quality of the material in this channel, excited to practice and keep learning with you!
Thanks Felipe!
I finally understand how chord changes relate to the key of the overall piece, thanks so much I was getting so confused thinking the key changed with every chord change
Me too! The chord changes just signal root notes which are part of the scale of the key. The more you know!

OH MY GOD. That was so eye opening! I have been struggling with scales for YEARS and nothing I watched would make me understand them and this video made the puzzles fit together. I finally understood the major C scale and am so excited to explore it in songs and have some fum with it! My mind is blown. Thank you!!!

Iâm just loving the subtle Flight of the Conchords Melodieâs in the transition cards⊠brilliant!
In my 3 months of playing bass i watched this video over 10 times and im only now starting to get it
Playing an instrument honestly changed my life, Iâm not any good yet but I just started playing bass and my dad got me an electric drum set recently and itâs nice to have all these videos to help me out. Iâm planning on taking your course it seems really useful for starting out on the bass. Such a beautiful instrument.
I stopped the video at the C Major Scale and spent the following 30 minutes or so going around and around it. Wonderful!
Love these lessons. The "painter's pallet" analogy is one of the best I've heard.
Awesome content.
I've struggled for a while to ubderstand how scales are actually used in a chord progression.
Most other CZcams bass teachers only show you the notes of the scale but none of then teach you how ti actually use it in a real time situation.
I salute you sir for your practical approach and for actually taking the time to show us noobs how to use the damn thing after you show it to us.
I will be a subscriber forever.
Pure gold, so much to work on and learn from in this video, thank you!
You're welcome Tim!
This is such a great breakdown of how to utilise the major scale, I've been stuck in the pentatonic rut for a long time! Great lesson!
Thx mate, appreciating your aproach to music and the way you present stuff, keep it up!
Ive been playing guitar since i was 15, starting in the early 90s (im 45 now). While I love it I wanted a change, plus people love female bass players.and bass players are hard to find. Just starting on bass to fill out the production for my songs. You have done an excellent job with the videos! Total props, much thanks!
This video helped me start seeing it all come together. I had only been playing the c maj scale while Iâm learning, I hadnât thought about moving it around the fretboard at all. So you showed me that, then you showed me all the major scales are the same shape. Thanks for that. This is gonna help me reel it all in.

Started playing bass 5 days ago on Monday with my new Marshall bass, I played along with you on most of your videos, and on the 4th day I upgraded to a new Fender - âAreodyne J Bassâ so I could keep up with the lessons better, and today Friday day 5 of me learning to play bass, I am jamming with you on the one and only scale I learned yesterday, and its the same one you use in this video, awesome đ, your a great teacher sir and a true blessing to all who are just learning how to play bass and jam! Please keep up the great work and God Bless !
Nice! Those Aerodynes look cool, I haven't tried one. Congrats on the start of your bass journey!
BassBuzz thx, and if you get a chance to play one, keep in mind these models are all made exclusively in Japan, as I was told, and I must say it sounds amazing đ.
Also the Truth is I made up my mind to upgrade after watching your video on the best cheap guitars, your tops were the fender and Yamaha.
Playing melodies on bass is a favorite thing to do. But I would also add some bends and vibrato to really match vocal melodies.
Definitely John! I tried to rein it in to make it clear what notes I was playing for this beginner video, but I would wiggle around a lot more to try to match Stevie Wonder!
Thank you so much for this video. I have been learning tabs mindlessly for ten years, although I took lessons for years. This helps me so much to come up with better bass lines for my band! â€
this is pushing me to learn the bass with greater enthusiasm! thank you so much for the energy in your videos and those examples sounds pretty as HECK

Perfect. Finally someone that really teaches you something useful and helpful. Thanks a million Josh.
Many CZcams videos say that you need to learn the scales and implement them in your playing, but this one is the best one at explaining how. Great video!
That "friendly bass teacher" got me. I admit it. I laughed.
This probably sounds really stupid but I feel like I really needed this video. I spent a really long time procrastinating learning scales higher up the fretboard and found it really difficult to memorize them or know how to use them. I also didn't like to learn riffs because I thought they were too short and I couldn't do much except play in the background of songs. I'm really grateful for this because not only can I play melodies using scales but I know have a foundation for creating my own bass lines. Thank you for making this video and sorry for the long comment
Glad this video was helpful! Nothing stupid about your comment, tons of people struggle with figuring out how to actually make music with scales.
