This is only the third of the Best Pictures covered so far that I have NOT seen ("Broadway Melody" & "Deer Hunter" being the other two and there will be more going forward, especially from the last ten years). I simply don't go to movies to be jarred INTO reality. While I enjoy some of the more classic war movies like "Patton" and "Bridge on the River Kwai" I have only seen certain others ("All Quiet on the Western Front") only once. I simply would rather war in a movie be the backdrop to a larger story than a realistic portrayal. That said, I would have had "The Mission" as my pick this year. Great performances by Jeremy Irons and Robert Deniro. But, even so, good for only one viewing. Not a strong year in my opinion.

What’s this movie about ? Being HUMAN in war; Elias versus Barnes and the men in the platoon who have to choose a side.
