    I think social media ended the celebrity; not necessarily genZ. Back in the day, we would only see celebrities during interviews, magazine spreads, red carpet events, and performances. But now they are pretty shoved in our faces 24/7; and they’ve lost that allure and mystery. The age of social media has brought in a new age of transparency and access. Influencers are the celebrities of now; we’ll see how long the wave lasts

      I don't think it's celebrity worship at all. For thousands of years in human history, wr all looked up to someone that was very popular that had traits, skills, a look, and/or product that resonated with us. Now that social media is here, we've become extremely entitled and opinionated. We want the "non-average" person to become more like the everyday man/women. This allows us to gain more access to their lives and personalize them to our specific wants/needs. If this was the 80's, we wouldn't be talking about celebrity worship. It would be normal to have a Michael Jackson poster on your wall or to want to look like Madonna.
      Add the fact that social media/internet can make anyone a celebrity.... people stopped seeing the need for "celebrity worship".

    • @lowkeyproductions6681
      @lowkeyproductions6681 Před 2 měsíci +97

      In some cases yes, but I’ve also noticed a shift in the opposite direction too, where people become overly familiar with celebrities and expect perfection out of them, feeling betrayed when they don’t behave the way they want. It’s kind of strange right now because ofc holding people accountable when they abuse their privilege is a good thing… but some people’s definitions of “abusing privilege” is very, very broad. Combine that with fan invasiveness and you create a response to celebrities that is just as toxic as blind adoration. They’re just people, for better or for worse. And the reality is, we should probably just stop giving them so much attention.
      Like I’ve seen people who stalk celebrity accounts and follow their every move claim that they’re just “holding them accountable.” I don’t think that’s normalizing celebrities and treating them as people.

    Here is my take: The term celebrity has lost its meaning now because everyone is capable of becoming one. Everyone has access to social media, which influences people to do/buy/sell us things, whether they be useful, or not. We can give our opinions on topics and or criticisms on any form of media we desire. That will cause other people to give their side and converse with us on a subject. You can criticize someone's work without it escalating to threats. (Trust me, I've had it happen to myself.)

    Honestly, I don't think people care about authenticity as much as they care about relatability and accessibility. Notice that when CZcamsrs get too big and but a mansion, fans get angry because they're not "authentic" anymore? Thing is, they are. They are authentic to themselves, they're just rich now. They are also, however, less accessible because they're status makes them intimadating and less approachable, and they are less relatable to the average person.
    That's why celebrities are dead dude. They're untouchable and we no longer have interest in that.

    • @lalaland2107
      @lalaland2107 Před 2 měsíci +15

      I have never seen fans say that the influencer isn’t “authentic” anymore, but rather “unrelatable” because they are now rich but when they started they were like their viewers…
      Also, I feel like people *now* care for authenticity because it seems people are bringing that up recently, wanting authenticity in their media, influencers, etc.
      When I say “now” I mean for about 2 years or so..

    • @ladyweirdo6035
      @ladyweirdo6035 Před 2 měsíci +24

      @@lalaland2107 I guess we're seeing different people on the internet? I think another example to bring up in the case of how people value approachability and reliability over authenticity is the case of Doja Cat.
      Nothing about her Scarlet era suggests she's being inauthentic. Everything makes sense. She's too big for her own good and so she's lashing out at entitled fans and shallow media critics who hate on her appearance. This change was received negatively. She's no longer a pop-rap girlie in the same way Nicki Minaj is. She's rude and hard to be around. She's not just some silly girl who made "B*tch I'm a cow." She's a rich socialite and she will not let you forget it. She's unrelatable.
      Another thing about your comment is when people say they want "authenticity" in their media. What do you think they actually mean by that?
      When it comes to the people they idolize, people want to have their cake and eat it too. They want them to be distant enough to where they can "stan" a person, but they also want to be close enough to them so that they can feel comfortable projecting onto them or aspiring to be them. Be real, if most influencers or celebrities were "authentic" I don't think most audiences on the internet would like what they see, even if it were relatively unproblematic.

Like people no longer see them as gods that are above us but they still keep track of everything they do and are constantly sharing news about them. Also, a lot of social media influencers are emulating the lifestyles of the rich and famous after tasting success and many are even going into Hollywood/getting invited to huge events. So that could be a new thing when the focus is no longer on traditional celebrities. I also feel like some of the new celebrities in this generation rn rely heavily on social media to make up for their lack of talent (ice spice, sexxy redd) it's no longer about talent but about who can appeal to shortening attention spans and have a bigger following.

    I’m honestly glad that the age of celebrity is dying out because it’s really unhealthy to put people on a pedestal like that. Celebrities are people just like anyone else. I’m just hoping the whole influencer thing dies out too though because 1. I’m tired of following someone because I like their content just for them to lose their whole spark for the sake of sponsorships and 2. I’m tired of people have overly polished instagrams and super sanitized posts, I wish people would just post the kind of random stuff that was on everyone’s Facebook wall in like 2010.
    I understand that influencers rely on sponsorships to pay their bills, so I’m not mad at that. I think what really bothers me is the fakeness and…uniformity of influencer culture? It was better when people just made stuff that made them happy instead of picking a niche and sticking to it.

Put it this way, if we can’t find them on Google / having their own Wikipedia page AND in publications outside of social media then they aren’t celebs. Social media can end at any time and their future generations won’t be remembered because of what they did. That’s the difference.

People spend so much time hating and dissecting celebrities life because they don’t want to work on themselves. It’s easy to get online talk shit about people to make yourself feel better. Celebrities shouldn’t go away what I do feel needs to do away is the sense of entitlement the public has to other people’s life and the need to think that your opinion means anything especially if you aren’t doing anything productive in your life. How are you going to tell a celebrity or a business person how to run a business when you haven’t done shit in your life even close to what they are doing. The desire for relatability is killing art. If you need to relate to everything you consume you’re really limiting yourself. A lot of the biggest stars of the past 50 years weren’t that relatable. We liked what they did and not who they were.
    There’s too much access and the fact that the audience gets to demand certain information about you and your personal life is dangerous.
    You don’t get to decide when it’s too much. You shouldn’t ask for it in the first place. Besides, a lot of this is performative/fake authenticity. You’d think that every online celeb who was “relatable” and then got caught out there doing something awful would teach us something.
    To quote lyrics from the band TOOL:
    “All you know about me is what I’ve sold ya
    I sold out long before you ever heard of my name
    I sold my soul to make a record
    And you bought one.”

      I think because social media is a personal and direct way to socialize, Millennials and Gen Z feel entitled that they share everything and be relatable, and it's like "No, not their job." Likability was important, but not relatability.

    I feel like everything thats been going on in the world lately has really impacted how we view celebrities. Because celebs feel the need to publicly express their opinions about issues that they obviously haven't researched, or don't say anything at all about serious issues, people have become really jaded towards them. Especially since they should have more time and resources to learn about world issues than everyday people. Like when it comes to Palestine, I've seen more regular people trying to raise awareness on social media than celebrities, and I feel like people are starting to go "Well if you have all this power and money and influence and won't use it for good, why should I waste my time on you?". And in the US, the increasing wealth divide is just continuously highlighting how out of touch celebrities are. Combined with the fact that a lot of these celebs are shitty people, and that information is becoming more publicly available, I think people are just tired of creating these parasocial bonds with celebrities only to be disappointed. I honestly think that we're starting to see this same effect with some of the more popular, established influencers too. Gen Z is big on accountability, and I feel like we're just tired of famous people acting like that doesn't apply to them.

If influencers are famous for putting everything online then celebs wanna be famous for being mysterious. It’s also easier to get cancelled the more active you are online. Nobody expects to see Mariah and Beyoncé to be tweeting random things when they’re not in that phase of their life much like most of our parents. They’ll always be separated from influencers and most of their fellow celebs due to the gap in age & length of careers. Your point definitely reflects younger celebs like Hailey Bieber & Karjenners. They are constantly playing a game of tug of war where they’re trying to keep their celebrity status while trying to commodify the relatability of influencers

Are celebrities important? Or rather should we as a society still admire these same people who are allegedly evil people who are criminals and unalive people for fans, fame and power? Hollyweird is under the spotlight and it’s not looking good for many A list celebrities to be honest, we really don’t care if they keep making brands or releasing more of their art for money and status because now society is waking up to the truth.

It’s a strange concept for ppl to accept but no one is more influential to us than influencers. I’m ofc talking abt on the internet. In your own lives you likely have greater personal influences. I don't think there's much difference in the nature of celebrity vs. influencer. Mr. Beast isn't really relatable at this point, nor is James Townsend for that matter. There has always been a subset of "authentic" celebrities, and those who openly struggled with various issues. Part of the reason that rock and roll was such a big thing was that any kid with a guitar could take a shot at being a rock and roll star, and SNL did that for comedy as well up through the '90s. Celebrity culture wasn't as monolithic as "movie stars vs. the rest of us" back then. In fact influencers seem to get wayyy more full of themselves, be more pushy about their opinions, and behave in much more toxic ways than your standard TV stars. The fixation on becoming a celebrity is also way bigger among Gen Z.

    Tbh I think there's something to be said about economy status - when things are Good, we want to frivolously gossip about these people who seem to be, like, public domain?? They're just characters in our head, we know they're real but... are they? (I hope y'all can understand what I'm getting at with that 😬) But then, on the flipside, now that things are So Bad, we're done gossiping in that silly goofy way about these unreal people. We're angry that they live in such a different world to us and get to just... enjoy everything and have the Easy Version - because they ARE real. They ARE real and yet they don't HAVE to be. (God I hope that made sense)
    Also, there are no more celebrities than there used to be (in the old days, you wanted to attend galas/balls held by the most famous people, and the most influential ones were the important ones to invite, for example) but social media really forced "influential people" to make content out of simply being alive. At least in the past you could choose not to be visited, and your mystery added to the intrigue. But now if you don't post 2 reels 1 carousel AND a short AND a couple tweets, per day, you'll become uninteresting to the masses. There is NO downtime. Also sidenote; Influencers as a concept are much much older than celebrities, and they're a core part of society's flow. And I think the throughline is that "Celebrity" isn't really possible for the peasantry, especially those with no outstanding talent or connections, but perhaps you could become someone influential if you do the right things! If you can influence a group of others to think a certain way or even just listen to you, you are above them in social society. This vibe. God this was absolute verbal garbage I'm so sorry.
    Also, and sorry to keep adding things, even though we use terms like celebrity, influencer, etc easily and without much weight, we all actually have an idea of who the standout stars are! The celebrities you could name in any country or with any group of people and expect they at least know the name. So I think it's fine when people call the 5 minute famous influencers "celebrity". It's gotta feel nice to touch gold!

    I think this started before gen z was even online since millenials had social media 1st. I'm at the end part of the millenials and even I experienced first hand celebrities interacting with us plebs on social media. In middle school back when MySpace was the place to be online I remember seeing Taylor Launtner and the Miley Cirus and other celebrities have MySpace and me and my friends would dm them to see if it was actually them and it was. It was such a funny experience finding a celebrity online and having dms with them until they obviously got annoyed of all the fans finding their account and setting their accounts to private 😂. Facebook wasn't really like that you couldn't ever really find celebs on there but when Instagram came along alot of celebs got Instagram and it went on from there to what we have today. I think social media in general has changed the way we interact with each other in general both positive and negative outcomes have come out of it. Celebrity culture being more relatable and more human I think is a good thing. I think it's worse for celebrities to be treated as objects and not as fellow people who just so happen to have more money than most but still live human lives with difficulty and struggle in ways we all do.

    I think it hasn’t died but it’s largely changed. Parasocial relationships are def at an all time high. What I think has died is celebs being general public famous, as opposed to now where it’s about cultivating a strong fan base that is obsessed with you. Influencers also have fan bases. People but especially gen z are want an identity so they like being apart of a community. It’s why certain artists have survived this transition (Nicki, Beyoncé, Taylor swift, Ariana grande) and why the few gen z artists are so big, it almost feels like they have a small monopoly over their market (Billie eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, timothee chalamet, zendaya). I would argue that even tho yes celebs get cancelled easier and the general public isn’t as engaged but at the same time social media has created a sect of people that are even more obsessed with their favs (look at kpop stans for example). Speaking of kpop, it’s a great case study on why the celebs there are so big and I think it’s bc the industry leans into parasocial relationships.
    The mystique of celebrity is dead. They aren’t worshiped like gods people aren’t passing out like in the days of MJ. But now with the addition of influencers, people have tight parasocial relationships where they feel apart of a community, they feel like a friend or a lover, and people understand yes they are human but now feel like they are owed a look into their private lives. And somehow I feel like that’s a bit worse, I actually prefer celebs to be this far away thing that entertains me or creates thought provoking art and then I keep living life. Instead it feels like gen z and millennials are way to invested in the personal lives of influencers and celebs.

    I feel like now it’s harder to be a celebrity (not influencer) as nobody’s really watching tv

    i hear your position... i'm just going to add:
    i think it the more prominant issue with "celebrity" changing to "influencer" is about the incessant need for voyeurism from the public. we have been conditioned to want MORE of every person. marketing has turned the intenet into a weapon of knowing more about us through data, have made us FEEL like we have more "connection" and need more "connection" with the marketers assets, those assets would be the people they contract and products they sell.
    marketing has figured out how to monetize identity.

    I agree with everything you said except in the perspective of a 29 year old millennial. My teen life did not have tiktok, so I do not see influencers as celebrities in any form. They are just really famous people. The key difference is that traditional celebrities, even the ones who cross over, leave legacies, and there are upcoming celebrities out there still just overshadowed. I just think some if not most coming up today are more on the influencer side to just make relatable content, a couple of hit songs, etc. IMO not much for the purpose of establishing a legacy. Most older folk and myself may not even recognize influencers if we walked past them on the street. To your point, some "celebrities" who show too much are just demoted to B-list to me personally. They are very famous and successful people IMO but most of them came from a social media/reality tv background to begin with like Cardi B, the Kardashians, Latto, etc. An A-list traditional celebrity to me is someone I feel like still has a mysterious side with qualities left to discover, and are uniquely talented. Basically, anyone who can have a classic Hollywood documentary made on their legacy good or bad. People like Prince, MJ, Michael Jordan, Beyonce, LeBron, Curry, Leonardo, etc, that's the allure for me personally than someone I can see every day on the internet.

    No social media. The second celebs could reach us without a publicist is the moment it fell apart

    I think the relation between influencer and audience started changing with Mr.Beast getting popular. In the past everyone viewd youtube and youtubers are just a fun place where people made fun videos. With Mr.Beast going around talking about how manufactured everything is (thumbnail choices, retention based editing) and seeing how many content creators follow the same format, the authenticity started to fade.
    Plus it doesn't help with how many creators talk about doing certain things for the bag.
