Nice work there Max pulling the headstock apart. Experience shows through, when you put the fixings and bits and bobs back in the holes they come off. I have had so many "tradesmen/technicians" who have worked for me just throwing everything in a bucket and we then found the wrong fixings in the wrong holes and they go off to stores for more bolts, nuts and washers. I only ever used to buy Sykes Pickavant pullers and kits every place I worked at, they do get abused and damaged. Then I got an offer on a couple of SKF bearing puller and installation kits, I was very impressed by the quality and design and indeed by the robust cases they came in. If you ever come across any going for a reasonable price, grab them, you won't be disappointed.
Thanks . The Sykes , i think were the ones that a lot of other makes copied . My one is an old set from the early 70's , was Dads set . Have not tried the SKF ones . 👍

Down the rabbit hole we goooooooooo.... Started simple like that for me with my pre-loved Hafco AL330. Ended up All bearings, tickle up on oil passages, deburr of all gears and shafts, quick change as well... And, I lifted the headstock off the lathe bed. Push me over with a feather if a beaver or some helpful....sob, had used a less than appropriate tool to prepare the top of the bed! Definitely not a mill, planer or surface grinder. Ended up epoxying a surface parallel to the ways using glass as the mold surface. Worked muddy blarvelously. She ran damn true after all that! Dare you check under the headstock.. It's only 4 bolts......
Ya know now is the only time... I often have to tell myself, 'Stop procrastinating, you know you won't be happy until you've checked/corrected/fixed the f###er. Just start...' Rabbit hole...... When I undid the head bolts the head actually could rock on the uneven bed surface. Chinese do stuff like all visible surfaces ground or painted, 'Their never going to see there', axe or 9in grinder. 4 bolts....
Over in the Canadian Prairies, we are heading into a 7-10 day stretch of below -30ºC (-22ºF). Night time temps touching -40ºC (-40ºF). Without windchill. That's 150ºF difference from you Max!
@@swanvalleymachineshop We had a month of 30-35°C this past summer. Usually only a few days over 30°C. But too much humidity for me when it gets over 28°C!!!

Hello Max, Our temperatures are about to be very close to yours this week but with a minus sign in front of them. In a few hours, when it is light out, I will be driving my John Deere lawn tractor ( I saw yours in the other video) but I will be blowing snow about as deep as your grass was long. I just took apart a feed transmission on my HBM and when it comes to this type of work I am a complete amateur. I was pleasantly surprised to see you using a bent rod to drive the bearing out as I made pretty much the exact same tool for a bearing in my transmission. I am looking forward to seeing you put it all back together as I have about twenty new bearings to install and I am hoping to learn a bit from you. Thanks, Ken

This was a really interesting video Max. I was bummed when it ended. You are one busy bloke. When I got my lathe it was new and before I added the hydraulic fluid to the headstock I wanted to open it up an see if there was any manufacturing debris inside. Unfortunately, it was pinned in place in addition to the bolts, so I left it alone. I was concerned that popping off the lid might let the structure relax and mess up the alignment. Have you ever heard of that sort of issue? Happy soon to be New Year.

Most likely Nachi for the ball races . The spindle has spindle grade Timkens & i will check the availability . Everything is closed untill the 4th Jan .
G'day Max, just started to watch this 3 part series. Did you, (as I recently did) discover that what I thought was a copper earth stake is in fact a steel stake with a copper coating? Love yr work, Ian Mac.
Hi Max, the same bearing failed on mine, non chuck side counter shaft bearing. I used the Sykes Pickavant blind bearing puller and changed both bearings leaving the shaft in situ. Must be more load on that bearing and maybe too small for the application, touch wood mine are still ok after many hours of running time.
Tough on bearing lubrication and motor cooling when shop is that warm. My shop in Albuquerque, NM gets that dang hot in the summer. We both must spend too much on machinery and tooling instead of air conditioning.🤣

Hi Max, when I took the cover off my al960 I was dismayed by the amount of metal in the oil ways and grit in the bottom of the headstock. How did you determine which bearing was noisy? Do you know if there is any way to align the headstock? Thanks Stan
My one had alot of sand in it when i first checked it a couple of years ago . I knew the noisy bearing was in the countershaft as the noise changed between high & low range . The headstock has alignment screws at the rear . I did my one in the middle of a video a few months back , can't remember which video .

You may be in interested to know that i am in the process of fitting a 1.5hp Inverter & Motor package with Remote. Metric D90S Frame motor, 24mm shaft. which will give a bigger range of speeds and better control, its currently on its way from the UK, I'll keep you posted if you wish. Happy New Year to you... DG

Yes . If they were solid copper , every one would be going around knocking them off for the scrap value !!!

That's what i think as well , one has more load .
64 deg F here in Ohio today.. should be in the 20s this time of year.
I wish it was that temp here . Total fire bans , can not weld or grind so new shop progress has stopped .

I could never work in that heat. My workshop is the opposite. In Winter it gets down to 2C. Usually about 8C with 90% humidity. Not good.
Wow , that's high humidity for low temps . Up north over here there is high humidity & i can not handle it with the high temps .
