Nick, this hike was definitely a highlight in my life and I am so proud to say that you cared enough to take me with you on yet another adventure! Someday, when I can’t physically do these hikes anymore (which I hope will be several years from now, ha), I know I will be able to watch these videos again and again, and remember the adventures we had and what we accomplished together! Thank you from the bottom of my heart again and again......love you to the peak and back!

I’m a man obsessed. I live in Iowa so the most elevation we got around here is like 1100 feet. But I walk those hills like no other. Did about 1200 feet of elevation a month ago on a hike in Colorado and am going to start training to get some 14ers under my belt. This will be my first and I will be taking the southeast ridge if at all possible.
Nick, thank you for a great video. This is one of the best videos I've seen on the Mount Elbert hike. Your video does a great job showing the actual trail and what I am in for. Albeit it will be 5 years old when I do this hike in August 2024.

was on North Trail this past weekend. Did not get past 13K because of the weather but going back and I def will be doing this one. I could see if from afar and it look more compacted so less slipping like up the false peak on north. thanks for this excellent guide!!

The view of Twin Lakes was stunning and the 360 panorama was absolutely breathtaking! I was surprised at the lack of exposure on this hike, just a lot of elevation gain. Binge watching videos like this get me stoked for my summer Colorado backpacking and fly fishing pilgrimages. Too, I've been volunteering with the Colorado Trail Foundation just about each summer since 2006 and this summer will be my fourth one working on rerouting sections of the trail in the Collegiate Peaks area and in the vicinity of St. Elmo, the Alpine Tunnel and Clear Creek Reservoir. I've posted a few videos of my volunteer work with the CTF but nothing as good as what you're putting up. You present the Colorado backcountry well! I've stayed at the Leadville Hostel a few times but I'm definitely gonna have to check out the Happy Hippie Tye Die House in Leadville this summer. Thanks for sharing your experiences!

I came here to drop a few words and saw your mom's comment and got all teary cuz that's just SOOO awesome that you hike with her and your dad and of course Jasper haha. This was such a beautiful hike, and my fav words with your videos are always "Good morning!" and I always hate when I hear "Time to head on back" lol. Anyhow, those aspens on the lower part of this trail must be a phenomenal sight when at peak in the fall, which makes me want to plan to hike part of this trail next mid to late Sept or so with a friend of mine! I'm already sharing this video with him because he truly needs to see a lot more of Colorado trails since he lives in Vegas. This one is one of my favs, thanks so much for sharing and btw, those crickets?? Nasty. Just nasty. (Don't worry, I wouldn't have stomped any of them, they're just ugly lol). Looking forward to the next video!!
Thanks for the kind words! I did a ton of hikes this year and ones that were more difficult, but this one was really special to me and probably my favorite hike to look back on. We just had everything working in our favor and it was a really great day to get to spend with my mom. It was a pretty tough hike and I'm proud of her for doing it! I'm glad you liked the vid as I really tried hard to make it good. I'll warn you though, the next one will be a tad different. ;)
@@nicksangetta8874 You're so welcome and truthfully, I'm glad that you share moments like these with us because it's heartwarming and these days we all need that. I consider myself warned and now wait for that little blue dot by your name haha. Also, I wanted to tell you that this past week I did part of the hike from the Hollowell Park trailhead into the Mill Creek Basin, part way to Bierstadt Lake then back and it was incredible. I had it mostly to myself, too, which made sitting by the creek much more peaceful lol. I could see first hand that steep climb up to the summit of Steep Mtn (very aptly named!) and was like "Yeah, better him than me..." Anyway, wish I could share a photo or two here but since you already know what the trail looks like, it's all good lol

@@metal_skies My videos make it seem like I hate people lol. But it's just more peaceful to sit next to a creek like that alone or with your hiking partner. That hike back behind Mill Creek is really pretty too. Everything in that area is. Glad to hear you had a good hike! :)

That trail is a lot safer then Longs Peak to!! It is a beautiful trail!
That was actually one of the best trails I hiked on all year! I was shocked it was that groomed.. but then again, its brand spanking new. You can tell the trail through the Aspens is new because all the idiots havent carved their initials into the trees yet.
I think I may have saw this two years ago before I tried it. At the time. I lived in Casper. Mistakes I made:
Got off to a late start. Left Casper at 3pm. I didn’t get into Leadville till 10:30 and drove on Halfmoon and car camped. I was absolutely terrified of being out in the wilderness by myself with just my revolver.
Didn’t sleep, didn’t eat much, brought WAY too many supplies. Wore too heavy pants, didn’t bring enough water. The big mistake I made was not getting cortisone in my right hip. I barely made it 1 mile in and my hardware was screaming in agony. Broke the treeline and I thought I was going to die. By the time I got back I was walking like I was drunk. I was proud I tried it. I’m flying back in a month
It's all about the adventure and not necessarily about the destination! Sorry to hear you didn't make it the first time. You can now rack that up as experience. Good luck on your next attempt!

Great video! I hiked the trail in 1998. Back then I had a full sized VCR tape camcorder, but didn't take it with me...this video will definitely take its place!

Hi. I just saw your comment as I was looking back and reflecting on this magnificent hike up Mt. Elbert! In answer to your question, I was 68 and Nick was 43. We are still hiking, but this was indeed a feather in my cap! Thank you for your nice comment. Smile😊
This is amazing footage! I’m seriously considering Elbert as my first 14er. Seems “easier” than the others, would you agree?
If you can get up that road its not too bad. Pretty mellow hike really, just a grind! The easiest 14ers in my opinion are Bierstadt and Sherman.
I'm planning this for Sept 17th of this year. I'm a little nervous about weather and other things, but I can't seem to find much info out about the road. I'm wondering if you think a Ram 2500 4x4 would be able to make it up to the end? I want to shave as much time off as possible in order to make sure I can take my time on the hike.
That road will be doable for you at least as far as we made it.. but just past where I parked there is a NASTY spot. Real deep water crossing and im not sure whats under the water. If you can clear that spot it should be smooth sailing all the way to the upper TH. That spot looks rough though..

Probably would’ve been traffic jams on the north Elbert trail. I may have to hike this one the next time I head out that way
Both times I’ve hiked Elbert it’s been from the north trail and the parking lot was full at 5:45 AM
I could see the people marching up the North trail. Unreal. Probably 100 of them easy.
Hey im planning on climbing elbert, what the difficulty on the south elbert trail, any high elevation gains. Was it an exhuastive hike?
Id say the South Elbert trail is a little easier. Less elevation gain than the standard route.. you just have to deal with the 4x4 road. Nothing too steep but it does have a few sections that go up. Nothing too hard. Afterwards I was pretty tired. You can do it.
Nick Sangetta I climb it in a month, do you recommend I train and do cardio? Did u do any training prior to submitting?

What's the name of the hotel you stayed at? How far is it from the trailhead?
We stayed at the Happy Hippie Tie Dye House in Leadville. Its not very far from the trailhead. Maybe 30 minutes or something. Not sure.
I think you need an upgrade to your vehicle Nick! So you can get up those rocky roads! lol
We actually took my mom's Element in the hope that it would get all the way up the road. Nope. But yeah, I was thinking about getting a beater truck to use just for 4x4 roads on certain hikes. There are some sweet trailheads that I just cant get to. But I like my Crosstrek. Gets awesome gas mileage! I can get over 500 miles per fill up if I drive like a normal person. I'd go broke trying to keep a gass guzzling truck full.
Is this trail the easiest to summit Mount Elbert?
I have never done the north trail so I dont know. I know the drive and parking are easier, which is why the north trail is more popular. I think they are pretty comparable for the most part. Just depends how far you can get up the dirt road. If you can make it all the way to the 4 wheel drive TH then that will be the easiest. It gets you the highest and closest.

@@nicksangetta8874 You can put a dwarf on a ladder next to a basketball player. He might be higher, but he's not taller. It's about base elevation vs peak elevation--I used to live under Elbert, now I live under Pikes Peak. Elbert is 14,440 ft high, Pikes Peak is 14,115. PP has a much lower base elevation than Elbert, thus it's taller, but not higher. You're being obtuse.
And I hate to bust your bubble, Smart Guy, but you measure from sea level. Therefore Elbert is both the highest and tallest mountain in Colorado.
