  • The National Zoo’s giant panda, Bei Bei, will leave Washington, D.C., and head to China on Nov. 19. His zookeeper Laurie Thompson said there will be tears.
Bei Bei, age 4, is the last of the zoo’s three giant panda cubs to depart, and could be the last cub in Washington for a while, closing a joyous chapter in local history that began 14 years ago.
China owns and leases all giant pandas in U.S. zoos. Two of the zoo’s cubs have already been shipped to China - Tai Shan, a male, in 2010 and Bao Bao, a female, in 2017. Read more: wapo.st/2NGFEvT. Subscribe to The Washington Post on CZcams: wapo.st/2QOdcqK

My family & I got to meet Bei (and Laurie) behind the public exhibit area at the zoo, in the keeper area, when he was just a few months old. No barriers and an hour of the keepers' undivided attention. He tried to crawl on us and they had to keep pulling him back. SO hard to believe he's already leaving! It flew by so quickly.

Where Beibei went is not a zoo, it is a panda sanctuary which is far better than a zoo. Larger enclosure, natural landscape, etc. If you want to check by yourself, you can pay a visit (located in Chengdu). Not all pandas are on exhibition there. Usually pandas who have been on exhibit for years can enjoy their life without the interruption of tourists. Pandas not on exhibition will have even larger enclosures that makes them hard to spot by human eyes. Their life will be close to that in the wild. Less human contact is good for them. They are shy creatures and have no immunity for most diseases that are common among dogs. So no dogs are allowed in the sanctuary.

For the folks who love Bei Bei, no worries. Bei Bei is going back home, the home of pandas in China is located in Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu provinces. In this area (about 1,524 - 3,048 m), are the cool, wet bamboo forests. The climate is more suitable for pandas, and they're well cared for :)

@@christinacope562 he will be in a breeding facility. Some parts are very good, but I was horrified when a documentary showed a male panda being put in with a female so they could mate. The male panda was very violent. The 'keeper' said, and he seemed serious, that there might be wounds, a limb might be lost (!), but the female would not die., so that was o.k. Apparently in the wild males will gather round the area of a female in 'heat' and will fight one another for access to her, and that will exhaust them so that they are not violent towards her. Bei Bei's mother is, frankly, lucky that she was artificially inseminated to produce her cubs. I will not soon forget that terrorised female when she managed to escape into her own enclosure for a while.
