    Hi Arden, I am a middle school music teacher and I sometimes share your videos with my chorus students. You have such a clear way of explaining some tough concepts and I appreciate them hearing technique related concepts from someone other than me. At some point, I would love to see a video from you with your basic warm up routine and how you modify based on your singers’ needs. Thanks for making these videos!

    Hi Arden. This is totally true, cause I have experienced a lot of tension when singing. Mainly, when singing in public. My muscles just block and I cannot singing freely. It is part technical and part emotional. I am worried about what the people think about my voice, if I am doing good or not, so all these things disturb me.

    Thank you, for your wonderful, clear understanding to support air for sound. I also have tension in my throat sometimes.How wonderful that you are guiding people into understanding the way thoughts can interfere. I speak to myself as I sing and remind myself I can do this easily. This helps me relax. The most profound thing to help me, is to drop into my heart and out of my ego and my throat opens up.

  • @stone8193
    @stone8193 Před 5 lety +8

    I personally just focus on the feeling in my cords at all times. Whenever the cords grow even a bit stiff your voice is no longer functioning as much as a vibrating instrument and more as a stiff valve for the air. I don’t believe in focusing on breathing but rather learn how to breathe so the cords are relaxed, and then get the mind out of the way of breathing. Breathing is too natural to be tampered with. Focus on the feeling under the cords and tensions all remove themselves in the tongue jaw etc. it’s the freedom of the cords that we are after, and even reverse engineer correct breathing at rest and during singing. The cords should be flexible and supple and not stiff. Learn the feeling of stiff cords (the cords themselves grow stiff to help resist the air by the vocalis muscle but then you lose any semblance of good vocal technique, vibrato resonance range agility etc). To sing loud the thyroarytenoids flex which recruits more mass into the vibration which serves to intensify all Harmonics and also provides more resistance to the air. (Chest voice). This can be done while the cords still remain non rigid. Trying to sing loud when you have tension exactly like you explain is a futile battle of bad technique and eventually vocal damage

      Hey there J-Ryze, this is what we do with pro singers and aspiring pro singers all day everyday. For most of you, the issues you experience in your singing and music careers are a thinking problem, not a singing problem because the body can't do what the brain is sabotaging. Check out this masterclass I did because I think it will give you some perspective on how we do this, and if you resonate, definitely book a call with me. webinar.ardenkaywinvocalstudio.com/s/nR2MHP

    Dear extraordinary teacher; I'm so glad to find your videos. It is not easy getting rid off from " vicious" .
    Please one question...in order to " wider" the so called " upper vocal cavity boveda" there are exercices like saying " ja..or ya...or ...or .." drilling" the upper palatto; in fact I did a lot and in fact... I did wider my " boveda"and obtained better " acutes"; but I wonder if in the future the
    " tangue" can get to the back easily ; for instant, while slepping and face the impossibility to breathe ..suffering 7:42 7:42 a kind of " aphnea, even "dieing" from .. soffocation, for example.
    May be it is a silly question, but I wonder a lot of, thanks in advance.

    My vocal coach years ago told me to flax my abs every time I sing to help me not strain my voice, every time I feel strain in my throat I try extra hard to breathe more with my diaphragm and tighten my abdomen for “control”
    if this is true this could potentially change the whole way I sing lol

  • @kanelo7046
    @kanelo7046 Před 2 lety

    Big reason for tension is improper warm up. People just want to get right into it and sing at their normal key. Be patient and do your warm up exercises, if you don't want to do that then begin singing your songs 3 semitones lower than usual. This will avoid tension and will activate correct breathing technique. Once you warm up and we all know how that feels then your golden. Yes its that simple, don't become your own worst enemy and overthink it.
    Have fun.

    • @ArdenKaywinVocalStudio
      @ArdenKaywinVocalStudio  Před 2 lety +2

      Thanks for weighing in Kaneio. And while a warm up is SUPER important, with all due respect, singing your song 3 steps lower does not activate proper breathing technique. If you've got inefficient breath support, it's gonna show up wherever you are in your range. The reason for tension is not an improper warm up, it's inefficient support. The tension is showing up in certain places in your body because that part of your body is coming in to compensate for the lack of proper supper being activated where it should be. So until you're supporting your sound with your lower support in the most consistent and steady way, the tension will unfortunately continue to show up.No amount of warm up can solve that unless you've been taught proper breath support and THAT efficient support is what you're warming up. Hope this is clarifying for you.

    • @kanelo7046
      @kanelo7046 Před 2 lety

      @@ArdenKaywinVocalStudio Singing 3 semitones lower does help activate my breathing. I sing four hours a day without tension. I know your hunting for clients and I respect that but at the end of the day it's all about how many hours you practice, if you put the time in you will get the results. 30 minutes a day is not going to make you a great singer no matter the teacher. YOu must put the hours in, The best singers put the most hours singing. As soon as I started putting the hours in I noticed an immediate difference, tension gone and higher range. When I say immediate I mean a couple of days.

    • @ArdenKaywinVocalStudio
      @ArdenKaywinVocalStudio  Před 2 lety +2

      @@kanelo7046 I'm gonna respectfully disagree with you here (and I appreciate the discussion and differences of opinion). If I've learned anything in my 25yrs of experience healing singer's voices from all kinds of tension, strain and vocal injury it's this - it's not about working harder (how many hours of practice), it's about working smarter. And when a singer learns how to leverage mind and body together, you don't need to practice many hours a day to get the result because each practice is more powerful and efficient in creating the kind of lasting muscle memory needed for massive improvement and results.
