I have a belief that many attributes of the utopian society leftism strides for will only be fully possible (or, at the very least, made much easier to achieve) through incorporating spiritualist ideas. We can't live in a society that values egalitarianism and truth and progress without having a discussion about Love with a capital L, soul/spirit/consciousness, and the nature of our reality and the limits our sick society has enforced upon our perspective of it.
I haven't met very many people on the true left that identify as spiritualists, only pop-woke toxic-positivity lukewarm liberals. Suffice to say it's refreshing.

For a revolution to be constructive, it requires the vast majority of people to view the revolution as necessary and then to act it out. No matter where you look societies are far from that, so you have to try to help as many people developing consciousness for the fundamental problems of their societies. Incremental change is necessary to create the preconditions for a revolution but also to better the lives of the people. So, not only are reforms important for positive change and increasing the chances of revolution, they also show how much change can be made within the system. It shows the limits of the system to the point that makes people go ''well, something else needs to be done, something revolutionary''. I don't think it's either this or that - it's both. Reform and Revolution work together.
And most importantly. If you want things to be better, if you want things to change - You have to fight for this change and engage. You have to go on the streets and protest, vote, donate, talk to people, start organizing. Do everything you're able to do to cause positive change. If there are chances, take them. If you see someone like Bernie Sanders getting a chance of winning, support him, even if you're a revolutionary post-capitalist and he's a social democrat. If there are outstanding chances for great change take them seriously. Ending Capitalism is a good aim, but in the meantime guaranteeing people healthcare, free college and a higher wage is also a good aim.

The Revolution should have a multitude of tactics like how a Swiss Army Knife has a multitude of tools for whatever work is needed. The Left has a tendency to tear itself apart with petty infighting and could really benefit more from a Iroquois Confederation-approach to alliances. The Iroquois Confederacy was formed of several Native American tribes. Basically, the tribes agreed to be allies and help protect each other from the White Man but at the same time, each tribe maintained their own sovereignty and was allowed to conduct their own internal affairs however they saw fit, so long as it didn't encroach upon the lives of their allies.
It's really an approach we can benefit from. Vegan/Vegetarian anarchists can exercise their beliefs regarding diet and animals, and non-Vegans can exercise their beliefs, so long as both sides respect the other, even if they don't quite agree. Heck, it really doesn't cost too much to pay attention to the dietary needs of your fellow rebels and bring something for them.
In any case, after the Revolution, we won't have a One-Size-Fits-All society (where everyone lives the exact same lifestyle, regardless of the area where they live), we'll have many, so we'd better start with a multi-sided approach.

We need to build dual economic power, and diminish the power and control capitalists have over the economy to be in a position to dismantle capitalism.
That means building worker and collective ownership right now! That means:
    - Co-ops
    - Associations
    - Collectives
And most importantly: Worker Confederations/Organizations, unifying their power, providing resources and building a direct dual power structure to that of the capitalists.
While I loved the above video I was disappointed this strategy was not offered as a viable option - especially when spontaneous protests, strikes, etc. were.
Everyone with resources and an idea can start a co-op, or alternatively find ways to support co-ops (mutual banks, etc.) - an incredible amount of successful co-ops exists already. The benefits are tremendous:
    - Most people need to work to live, by working for co-operatives earning a livelihood is combined with revolutionary activity - making it far more sustainable that unions - who remain dependent on the capitalists.
    - Workers have more money in their pockets/there is no exploitation
    - Exploited workers see "socialism" in action, and the benefits to them (including conservatives)
    - Less and less of the economy will be managed by capitalists, which means their position weakens
    - Through worker confederations their collective power will be consolidated to directly fight capitalism and fund leftist activities
Of course, simply starting co-operatives, or a large scale militant co-operative movement will not end capitalism in and of themselves.
IMPORTANT: Attempts at creating a co-operative economy may simply lead to a similar moderating effect to the exploitation of capitalists as that of democratic socialism. A co-operative company existing within a capitalist framework will quite likely work with capitalist companies, and lose the majority of its revolutionary potential. The worker-owners need also not care about their fellow workers suffering under capitalism, but their own selfish gain/agenda.
BUT: Each strategy is incomplete on it's own.
We need a synthesis/compromise/alliance between most if not all the major anti-capitalist strategies to ever reach our goal.
They complete eachother rather than contradict each other in my view.
(I have written quite a lot already. If anyone wants me to elaborate on my final lines feel free to ask).

There's a problem in the use of reform vs. revolution. There's an equivocation between two distinctions going on - between gradual vs. sudden changes in the system, and between an end goal that's fundamentally capitalist still and one that is not. 'Reform' gets used sometimes for the gradualist position on rate of change, and sometimes for the limited position on an end goal; 'revolution', for the saltationist position on rate of change or for the strong stronger position on end goal. One irritating effect of the equivocation is that the gradualist rate of change position is dismissed based on the rejection of the limited end-goal position being rejected. It's especially annoying when the likely best chance at getting to a satisfactory end just is the combination of gradualist conventional political action in combination with dual power structures, a mass line (which can be regarded as simply a dual power structure mirroring delegative democracy), and community defense. But creating a wobbly, equivocal distinction between reform and revolution just makes that harder to conceive.

I think I'm a reformist but I want a full end goal (both ancom and libsoc societies sound good to me). I just think snowballing the reform until it gets to revolutionary levels could work better than simply rejecting smaller reforms on the way toward the ideal. I support revolutionary actions, I just think things like voting and legislative reform are useful tools to reduce suffering on the way, or something... My views are still a work in progress.

But this showed me I can definitely get behind making sure any defense groups and other revolutionaries are fed via “food not bombs”. We can all play different, but equally important roles in getting us to our end goal. Thanks for this!

This is one of your better ones recently. It's a good introduction and covers a lot of essential ideas and is very well produced. I enjoyed it.
Although I think we need to be more serious about science in terms of checking the factual grounds for strategy. For example, consider the idea of replacing one system with another. This simply isn't how ecosystems you're in work. Looking at the end of feudalism or the beginning of agriculture or the state, we can see that different methods of (technologies for) social organization , particularly of production, tend to exist in parallel but one or two tend to dominate. So then the question becomes not how to replace the capitalist system (if you want to do that maybe finish overthrowing feudalism first) but how to replace the dominant position of the capitalist mode of production with one or more revolutionary communist modes of production and the end of wage labour's predominance in the world. As appealing as scrubbing capitalism off the face of the earth sounds, unless you can achieve its utter irrelevance and obsolescence, it's gonna be like fighting a War on Drugs.
We need new methods of revolutionary struggle and new resources because serious capitalist reactionaries are expanding private property, expanding their technologies of control, and expanding the space of capitalist valuation. Machines can deterministically kill humans in combat because of their reaction time advantage. Without direct struggle against time under wage labour, capitalist space, and private property to expand the tiny fragments of revolutionary spacetime, there's no hope for positive change except spontaneous revolution by pure coincidence. But doing this means engaging with actually existing normal fuckin science and engineering like Marx did, but on a much more serious level and on a much larger scale.
It's also nessecary to have dual power structures at an international level like IWW to achieve these goals. We have to actually have revolutionary modes of production to displace the capitalist one with. This includes expanding revolutionary space ala Lefebvre.
The other thing that I think is nessecary to address is abuse. At its heart, it's my personal view that the main goal of the anarchist left is to oppose abuse, the capitalist mode of production being both exploitative and a hotbed of other kinds of abuse. This means understanding abuse and anti-abuse strategy, and the ability to oppose abuse within our own movements, which can be a major cause of the breakdown or fall into dysfunction of leftist organizations.

Capitalism lives through owning the means of production. I think a viable step in replacing capitalism is by organizibg entire companies of workers and have them seize the means of production by simply... taking over the company.
What are the owners gonna do?
A mass exodus of workers kills any company.

      Tell me about it.
As a Pole myself, I too went through the journey of "USSR and communism bad", left-leaning centre, being pushed to the centre after hearing exaggerated reports of refugee rapes and murders in Europe in 2015 and randomly discovering Paul Joseph Watson (🤢🤮) that doubled down on this rhetoric.
Fortunately, I gradually re-embraced leftism after hearing of cases of worker exploitation, environmental pollution, etc, and realized something had to be done about - and thus discovering channels like Our Changing Climate, Second Thought, and eventually this one.
But unfortunately, my uncle is a staunch PiS supporter obsessed with anti-Bolshevism and is exactly of the mindset you describe. He cannot even tolerate people who support PO, a centrist party, so I inevitably have to keep quiet around him.

Just a little historical note: before Occupy Wall Street started, the movement in Europe (and elsewhere?) was already underway under different names, starting with the Spanish Indignados / Real Democracy Now, a movement itself strongly influenced and inspired by the Arab Spring which started a bit before. As soon as OWS started the global movement rebranded to “Occupy” but the Occupy movement actually predates OWS and the Occupy name.

    • @NonCompete
      @NonCompete  Před 5 lety +4

I don't disagree, per se, but it's also important to consider how conservatives and reactionaries take great pains to "poison the well" and intentionally make public social programs perform as poorly as possible to prevent them from getting public support and to turn people off of the ideas of socialism. Just something we need to recognize and account for in our strategies!

  • @watsonwrote

I feel like the biggest barrier to gaining enough support for revolution is the general apathy and helpless that capitalist propaganda has engendered among the people.
I think most people regard capitalism and wage labor as an unpleasant but necessary and inevitable part of life. Most people can't imagine a better set of circumstances for themselves in reality.
We need to create something that becomes mainstream--part of the cultural consciousness--that contains a message about how people _can have_ and deserve better circumstances. I grew up brainwashed into thinking capitalism is the best and only system we can have and anything else is evil and unrealistic. How can we effectively change this? People generally don't want to hear what they consider "fringe" and "dangerous, unrealistic" ideas.
Memes? Popular Netflix and CZcams series? Facebook campaigns? Massive rallies? Slogans?
I'm serious--if Trump can swoop in with people like Steven Banon coordinating their efforts to capture the imagination and energy of so many people with their actually dangerous fringe ideas in such a short window, then we absolutely must do the same.

    • @evanhenderson9461
      @evanhenderson9461 Před 5 lety +1

Where you're wrong is in thinking that you can do what Trump did. It's a million times easier to make everyone fight a single enemy through anger fear and racism than it is to get them to understand how they are truly oppressed and to fight out of hope and frustration. Pure simple anger and fear are much better at enacting change than the other way around.
