      EU isn't on the side of Azerbs at all. It's just not enthusiastic about making Russia even angrier on yet ANOTHER frontline.
      Also, be careful about that "backstabbing part", maybe? We french still wonder why the hell (well, maybe UK can give a more precise answer, hmm?) our government waited for so long to antagonize clearly Nazi Germany while it was messing up the Eastern Europe. Whether it was "forced" or just because last war was already harsh enough and would've upset citizens, France didn't move. We MIGHT, at best, move too late for Armenia.
      So yeah. Ally. Sure. But don't count on us too much and don't give us more than we would give you. Just in case :/

    Armenia is less then 3 million people, even in its crippled state Russia could sneeze and eliminate Armenia.
    Turkiye is a non starter for joining the EU as a full voting member, which is why a tiered platform is better for the engines of the EU.
    The interest from Western holdings of Russian money should definitely go to Ukraine retroactive to 2014 when they annexed the Crimean peninsula.

    Does this mean Armenia also have the desire to join NATO?

    • @eh1702
      @eh1702 Před 2 měsíci +6

      The EU is an economic & social collective across a geographic area. It is about trade, and about civil standards - aligning civil and criminal law, consumer and food standards etc. Its objective is that it reduces the reasons why countries wish go to war at all.
      Nato is a much bigger, multi-continent mutual self-defense treaty, to stand up to the territorial imperialism of (primarily) Moscow, with the assurance that if one member is attacked, all members defend it.

    • @eh1702
      @eh1702 Před 2 měsíci +6

      The two organisations are completely independent of each other. The reasons for joining each are different. Countries may want to remain outside the EU because their economic zone is focussed elsewhere - but they may want to join NATO. And vice versa.
      Historically the US has been powerful in Nato while its relationship to the EU is less happy for it, since the EU is big enough to demand good terms in trade treaties. The US does not get its own way as it can with smaller individual nations. On the other hand the US sees the EU as a good influence for preventing another major war being triggered in Europe that spreads to other continents, as in 1914-18 and 1938-46.
      Until Putin’s fulls scale invasion of Ukraine, Sweden and Finland were happy to be in the EU but did not want to be part of Nato. They felt (like Ireland) that neutrality was their best bet. Finland kept up a very high level of military readiness on its own account, independently.
      There are other countries in the EU like Switzerland Ireland which have traditionally taken no part in the large European wars. Ireland does not wish to join Nato.

    Armenia was most loyal partner of Russia,and Putin decided to sell them to highest bidders,and ordinary Russians kept quiet,not forgivable.

    I imagine this has been in the back of their minds for some time! They were probably just waiting for the right moment when the all-seeing eye of Moscow had its gaze occupied with other issues!
    Now would be an opportune time for other countries to try and break free as well.
    Honestly, I kinda figured this would happen far sooner! 🎉

    It appears a lot of former Soviet entities like their new freedoms and don't want to give them up by joining Putin. The thing NATO has going for it is each member has a voice and sovereignty.

    I'm really interested in geopolitics and wanna express my point about Armenia.
    I think it should be smarter to armenians to play the past finnish strategy! I would advise them "Don't defy or provoke the bully". Be smart, be cautious and unbiased like Finland used to be (but not now, of course, the peril is at their doors!!).
    Delete, for now, any EU or NATO plans!!!! Promote and keep multi lateral relations with ALL players, like the finnish did. Do not choose a side, be ambiguous. Play a friendly strategy with Azerbaijan (forget N. Karabakh for a while), talk to Turkyia, put aside genocide past, keep relations with Russia. Do not bet on the same Ukrainian strategy. SLOWLY and PERMANENTLY make the democratic and economic changes you deserve to achieve!!
    Be surreptitiously wise!

    Armenia has been a participant in the EU's Eastern Partnership program for quite a long time now, since 2009.
    Of the six countries involved, Belarus suspended its participation in 2021, Ukrainian and Moldova have secured EU 'Candidate Member' status., which leaves Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia. Georgia is on track to secure 'Candidate Member' status.
    It will be interesting to see how the EU reacts to an Armenian membership application.
    I suspect that, unless and until Turkey's membership is unfrozen, Azerbaijan has no chance of getting EU 'Candidate Member' status.

    Armenia has issues with it's neighbours,
    How would they be dealt with during the Invasion of Ukraine, it's EU status and Nato Status?
    Turkey's difficult and protracted wait for EU membership, it's Opposition to Sweden and Finland's Nato membership?
    Turkey's relationship with the Kremlin and it's importing of Oil from Russia?
    Erdogan will sit in the middle of it all and make demands if not trouble.
