- In the run-up to February 7 presidential elections, repression has increased in Azerbaijan, a former Soviet republic in the Caucasus that borders Iran and Armenia. Any opposition to President Ilham Aliyev is silenced. Human rights activists, journalists and political opponents are on the receiving end of the regime's wrath on a daily basis. Our reporters Karina Chabour and Roméo Langlois met victims of torture who are denouncing a violent system of repression. They also looked into the Council of Europe's ambiguous links to the regime in Baku.

I would say this video is a little biased. As an Azerbaijani though i dont really like aliyev’s domestic policies.there is not many strong opponents to him as smart and as educated. Even my family and friends around hold the same view unlike me. So he is quite popular in public not like how u guys report !!😊

@JN-wr9he It is because 90% of that countrys revenue is coming from a scarce resource which will soon run out and that is oil. Without a new leader with fresh ideas the country will go on a decline. This old system has not made any investments into new ideas.
Azerbaijan deserves a better president. Aliyev has been in power over 20 years and that is bad for the country. The country needs a fresh new leader.

Russia should intervene to stop this horror
At one time Russia could control wayward neighbours on its borders and make them behave. But with its power diminished no longer. A pity. We need strong countries to act as regional leaders eg India in S Asia and ensure the security of the Region is not jeopardised. Russia could have done that, but no longer.
