Chiswick Park Tube Station / Only Unconnect Ep.6

  • I'm visiting another unconnected station on the Tube Map, this time ... it's the fabulous Chiswick Park, arguably one of the finest stations on the Underground network.
In 'Only Unconnect', I'm visiting some of my favourite stations on the Tube Map, this time with the theme of them not being connected to any other lines, and appear with just a station 'tick' on the map without a connector blob. They're unconnected, hence ... Only Unconnect!

funny thing is, the station is not in Chiswick, but is in fact in Acton. the boundaries of Hounslow (where Chiswick is) and Ealing (where Action is) starts RIGHT before the sation. you can even see a borough of Ealing bin outside the station

Correct however i still would say the station is in Chiswick eventhough it’s not in the borough of Hounslow or i would say it’s in south acton

Chiswick Park is where the King’s Army battle line was anchored in the Battle of Turnham Green, 1642. The Parliamentarian line was anchored on Turnham Green station. I don’t suppose many commuters realise they are traversing a battlefield!

Thanks Geoff, at least someone realised Acton was overloaded with stations and dropped the Acton bit all those years ago😀 Lovely to have the video redone. Feel free to update any others you were not happy with, all the more for us to enjoy.

No it should be called Acton Green again, you can never have enough Actons soon all stations in London will be Actons. marble arch? no rename it Acton arch, Brixton? no Acxton.

Ironically when I attempted Geoff's "All the Actons" challenge, I ended up calling at Chiswick Park anyway, so even if it had kept its old name I would have still completed the challenge in the same time!

Something about late Art Deco architecture that is pleasing, including the Hoover building and those houses and flats along the Great West Road with the metal curved windows, must have been a glaziers nightmare to reglaze, probably why most uPVC replacement ones aren't curved.

I was a Gunnersbury man back in the mid 90s. Loved Turnham Green and Chiswick Park, too. Caught the Piccadilly from Hammersmith, Central from Holborn.
Sounds like a complicated trip to Liverpool Street but it wasn't that bad, better than the Circle Line!
Chiswick Park was frequented enough by me, a lovely station 🙂❤

You wouldn't need the Circle Line for a simpler journey: you could have changed at Hammersmith between the District and Hammersmith & City Lines.

Couple of lost rivers in the area too. The nearest one, Bollo Brook, runs just to the east of the station. Stamford Brook is also nearby.
When I was walking the District Line it frustrated me that I had to walk to Turnham Green from Richmond before going up towards Ealing Broadway instead of Chiswick Park because that branch doesn’t stop at Chiswick Park.

Another classic GM vlog. As always some very clever camera work: personally, I have to say, the final platform scene (timeline 3:50 - 4:05) was perfectly shot to leave the viewers in no doubt where they were and, at the same time, respecting the passenger’s identities. As for the remarkable architecture, as you said, an absolute classic! Thanks Geoff.

The abandoned track that Geoff refers to carried coal trains from the North London Line to West Kensington and High Street Kensington coal yards. It continued on a separate alignment from the eastbound District passing under the Piccadilly line roads to join the eastbound District at it's lowest point before climbing to Turnham Green. After passing through Turnham Green on the eastbound fast the coal trains went into a siding before emerging onto the eastbound District and continuing to West Kensington. The gradient on the eastbound District before it joined the main line was too steep for the coal trains. The West Ken coal yard was behind the westbound platform where Ashfield House and the Aisgill Avenue estate now stand. The High Street coal yard was to the west of the station and trains had to do a double shunt up an incline to get to it. The site is now occupied by the Copthorne Tara Hotel.

I have used it in recent times when traveling to Hampstead Heath as it is a short walk to South Acton Overground from there. It should have kept the original name as Acton Green as that is the name of the area, but as it is in the W4 post code and the rest of W4 is Chiswick it has always suffered from Chiswick creep. Always enjoy your videos.

I found interesting the part on the colour of the handrail as that's a distinctive peculiarity of Milan metro.
Every line has the handrails all around the station of the same colour of the line. This started from the begginning when M1 interiors were designed by Franco Albini and Franca Helg in early '60s and goes on till nowadays with the other lines and M1 extensions.

Back in the 1960’s Chiswick Park was famous amongst the motor racing fraternity for what went on in the railway arches underneath the track and station. Several small businesses occupied these arches and prepared, built and designed racing cars. These included P & M Racing preparations, a stalwart of the Formula 3 scene; famous engineer Frank Costin designed and built a wooden monocoque sports racing car (later known as the Costin Nathan, but originally the Amigo). He knew what he was doing with wooden monocoque and earlier design of his being the Moquito light bomber in WW2. Happy days

At the risk of starting an unnecessary argument, I would have to vote Southgate underground station as the best to view at night, especially if you are coming up The Bourne (A111) and are looking across the roundabout to the station. Although it is hemmed in by adjacent buildings, the flying saucer effect of the station's design is pretty decent.

LizPurp (aka Crossrail 1) BR345 2.772m (9 ft 1.1 in) = standard class has 2+2 seating. Seat Covering so worn out, sitting on Actual METAL.
    vs
Thameslink (aka CrossRail 0) BR700 2.80m (9 ft 2 in) = standard class has 3+3 seating. Seat Covering still comfortable and no sign of threadbare.
With such a small difference of Width of trainsets... WHY does xrail 0 ... Thameslink 2000...erm 2020... able to have 3+3 seating?
Do you happen to know why the 345s were made to be only 2+2? Trolley Service, not actually able to travel length of train carriages due to standing passengers. IF the 345s had 3+3 seating it would have had 50% more seating and could have retained the Buffet Carriage with seating for diners on voyages to Penzance, etc.
