The realistic animal characters in Mogli had more expression than any character in this movie.
literally, just compare Shere Khan with Scar, they are complete opposites with expression despite being super similar designs, tigers arent that far from lions to animate.
Fun fact: Jon Favreu made the jungle book remake too. So in my opinion he somehow made the best while also making the worst remake.
Based on what I’ve heard Cinderella is a little better, but close enough.

5:34 Not only is the camera movement unimpactful, but you also barely see Zazu, you just see him flying towards Mufasa as a littlw speck instead of actually having the sense of scope in the original with the camera directly following him flying from his rear

I think movies like this will never work because when we watch a Disney Renaissance animation we come into it with a suspension of disbelief. We know that the characters are just drawings but we let ourselves believe they are emotional and alive. When we feel like we’re watching a National Geographic Documentary based on the visuals, we can’t accept that realistic animals can sing. We can’t even enjoy it because logically we are constantly reminded that these are animated animals and there is singing on top of it. It doesn’t look like they are singing or emoting at all so it just feels like a really weird episode of Planet Earth.
Also Timon saying Pumbaa disgusts him in such a mean-spirited tone of voice is insanely out of character. Dude sounds like he’s about to file the divorce papers.
It’s clear that the songs were ruined because they weren’t songs that were designed to be radio music. The songs are supposed to be fun and impactful, but too much value was placed on their production and ability to stand alone. I.e they were poppified
them being "realistic" animals isn't even an excuse for them all looking so deadl! anyone who pays actual attention to a real lion for longer than 5 minutes can tell you they have plenty of expression and body language, disney just couldn't be bothered to animate literally any of it at all so they all just stand around motionless where a real animal's entire body would be twitching all over the place with every shift of emotion! and the terrible voice acting that universally sounds like it doesn't want to be here isn't helping

Okay, I must tell you sth. I didn't remember this movie being so bad, but after a few minutes I've realized why. I've watched parts of it with polish dub. And the polish dub is actually good? Like, I know it's hard to believe, but any problems you had with the voice acting in the English version is improved in the polish one. I think it's because many talented and recognizable polish voice actors took part in it. Yk, those that can ACTUALLY act and sing. Bro, I even got chills listening to "Be prepared". So imo, the worst thing abt this movie (after it's lack of any creativity or facial expressions) is the voice acting. But that might be just me

Compare how be prepared was in the animated, and in live action, in the animated, you can just feel in sinister energy of the whole song and how bombastic and epic everything was, in the live action version, it just looks bland with just blue everywhere. Plus, since the animals aren't emoting, I'm not wmoting. You can basically pinpoint this to every single song in the live action version.
Yeah the hornbill species Zazu is in the film should have been swapped for a more colorful species cause using the exact one he is in real life doesn't work visually and I'd say it also is a detriment to the character along with everything else.
It's hilarious that Lions are known to have almost as much range of facial expressions as humans yet they didn't use much of that in this movie. (I only see a couple of actual expressions in the movie from the animals aside from dead stare or angry).
Also the body language of the animals could have worked. Except that it didn't work in this movie. Some of it is easy to read but others just make the animals look like lifeless puppets.
As someone who knows cat expressions like, fluently, the attempt to make the lions expressionless just makes them look scared or annoyed 99% of the time. That was my big problem with this movie. It's like the only times they interact with a cat is when it's scared or annoyed by them.

When it comes to the new VA for Zazu in I Just Can’t Wait to Be King, he doesn’t sound too panicked or frantic and I personally think that’s the main detriment to the song. Most everyone can recognize og Zazu’s portions of the song because they were literally so different from the music and clearly delivered to also add a bit of humor because a bird screaming in contrast to everyone else harmonizing is utterly hilarious. New Zazu is just talking and just maybe it’s not the voice actor’s fault (I personally like his voice, not his delivery), but in the presentation of it all, it’s just not great
i genuinely believe the changed Hakuna Matata so much because the voice actors literally couldnt sing the original version, that to me is 100% why Pumbaa says "craa-aa-aayze" instead of one long "craaaaaaaze" i dont think Seth Rogan could get that note right, so they just changed it rather than bothering to get voice actors to do the singing parts

They are making a prequel called Mufasa the Lion King all I know is it takes place a little bit before Lion King 2 but after Lion King and Rafiki tells baby/young Kiara the story/past of Mufasa and Scar
@@JonahWhoThey actually can’t because the ending with all the Disney characters have Br’er Bear, a character that Disney never wants anything to do with again despite being iconic in Splash Mountain (only active in Japan 🇯🇵 now). Also Pocahontas might never get a remake (there’s like a 1% chance because there is a way, but I got to find the link to that video I watched that says how), so that’s a nail in the coffin since the titular character is in the movie theater as well.
I want to say a couple things here:
Number one, with "Can You Feel The Love", the big thing about the vocal performance in the original is that it's soft in its delivery. Even more intense beats of the song are still presented in a gentle way that carries the message of two characters falling in love entirely. The remake sounds more like two people fighting for dominance, and it's so over the top and showy that all of that gentle tone is completely missed.
Second, I have to put in my 2 cents here. What the director of the remake completely missed is that Realistic does not equal Flat. He said something about not believing in a pretty sky, which... Where is he living? Someone please let this dude outside once in a while. He also refuses to give the animals any expression, claiming realism, but animals have so MUCH expression. If they had brought in real lions, they would've had a movie full of expression and emotion.

I decided to watch the remake and the original last week both fully for the first time. I watched the remake first and it was incredibly boring. The original was a lot more engaging.
Having never seen the movie, I had heard about the changes to Be Prepared and I thought that would easily be the worst song in the movie. Boy did I underestimate how bad it could get.
Honestly I feel like Be Prepared worked better than most of this other garbage simply because they went in a completely different direction instead of doing the originals but worse. Wasn’t necessarily a *good* direction, but after seeing Hakuna Matata and Just Can’t Wait To Be King it definitely could have been a LOT worse.
Imagine if Disney starts making live action remakes of Pixar films, how would be Finding Nemo, A bug's life, Monsters inc, etc?

You know what’s awful? I never saw the original Lion King when I was little (I was more into books than movies so I missed a lot of Disney films). But when the live action remake came out in 2019, I hadn’t caught on yet that modern Disney is a soulless, creatively bankrupt toy company/theme park chain who pumps out low-effort remakes and sequels as glorified advertisements, so I watched it when it came out on demand. *My first ever impression of The Lion King was the live action.*

Jon Favreu's style does not fit The Lion King at all. If you can, watch Prehistoric Planet; his direction shines there. But full-realism doesn't belong anywhere near Disney movies where characterization is a must.
I adored The Lion King so much I wore out our VHS copy of it. I took my dad to see the 3D rerelease in cinemas and then a few years later - "Hey Dad! The live action Lion King is out! Let's go see it, it's gonna be so cool!" I walked out of that theatre so embarrassed at what I'd just subjected my poor father to.

I've never actually seen the """"live-action"""" remake but when I first heard that John Oliver would be playing Zazu, I was like "yes, good, perfect casting". Then I watch this video and I'm like "wait, did I just pull that casting out of my ass? That's not John Oliver's voice". Then it hit me: the accent.
The voice director had him go for RP accent like the original Zazu, for that upper-class sound... Oliver's actual accent is very working-class-y, and fighting to keep the RP seems to have greatly affected his performance (both acting and singing-to my knowledge this is his first VA role but his delivery on his show is very energetic and animated. Comparing him to a various kinds of upset birds is actually a long-running joke both in show and by his critics). His voice is still deeper than the original VA's but he could've been great in this role! The RP accent is only there as shorthand anyway, so the audience can immediately peg him as the uptight, upper-class tutor archetype.
Come to think of it, the "county out" is probably the accent slipping? I'm used to his usual voice, so I heard "count me out", but a phonetic transcription might be "count 'ee out", with the 'm' getting swallowed a little.
(Also: the reason Timon censored Pumbaa in the original movie was because "fart" was considered a rude word back in the day-comparable to "shit", based on stories my dad's told me. So a better meta-joke would've been to have Pumbaa ask Timon if he was going to stop him, Timon is confused as to why he would do so, and then maybe Pumbaa looks at the camera or something?)

The way they extend the notes in that pop style is so frustrating. Like that’s what pop song covers are for, in musical theater the goal is for the audience to understand what you’re saying and the mood it wants to convey. That’s why in theater you sing it straight but powerful. The up and down notes sound nice on the radio but they just muddy everything when the point of your song is to set a scene and tell a piece of the story.
my cats have shown more expression than any of the characters in this movie. it's not like animals irl look like that either, if you look at videos of real lions, they DO have expressions. not human expressions, sure, but they don't look like cursed taxidermy.

After rewatching the why i'll no longer be watching Schaffrillas Productions video after yesterday i kinda feel you in this video i trusted him and loved his content through out the years and his golden age was 2019 to 2020 and his pixar video was great and then he did countless star wars and marvel videos and barely talked about animated movies until his space jam 2 video and he did it on a poll with boss baby 2 instead of doing both and would rather talk about the 100th marvel movie then his worst video came out his studio ghibil ranking even though not as bad as nostallgia critic's the wall where he barely talked about the movie and saberspark 64's deltarune chapters 1 and 2 review where he didn't even played half the game with the genocide and snowgrave routes. The studio ghibil ranking was boring with the expection of the bad movies being Earwig and the Witch, Tales from Earthsea, Ocean Waves and there was too many good movies and i'm not saying they should be all bad movies it's just when only 3 movies in the ranking are bad it can get boring and then i thought that schaffrilas has lost the idea of his main audience being american animated film fans and i guess anime fans will like the video but he didn't even need to do the video since he's only reviewed 1 studio ghibil movie and he didn't really even care about anime and the video is his least ranking video with not even 1 million views after 6 months and then he made his sony ranking video which was really good with a ton of good jokes and new movies he has a hatred for like open season, surf's up 2, and the smurfs, and then he made his disney 2010's ranking which was good but the only movie he haven't already watched was winnie the pooh 2011 and then his turning red review was pretty bad but not as bad as mr enter's review saying the film should've mentioned 9/11 and then he made his blue sky ranking which is not as good as your's but still pretty great even though i disagreed on a lot of his opinions like all the ice age movies and ferdinand and then he teased a illumination ranking and thanks to spacechris7 i found out it's coming after minions 2 but before the mario movie because it's getting a seperate review and then he did the unreedemable and gave the new dreamworks movie the bad guys a weak 5/10 and ranked it below f**cking antz and abominable and all he said about was the animation was good and unlike all the other opinions even if i disagreed with him i understood his point but here he said nothing on why he didn't like it and also ignored boss baby 2 and sprit untamed and it's insulting to his and dreamworks legacy because he mainly got popular because of his dreamworks videos and i'm pretty sure without his dreamworks videos he wouldn't have 1 million subscribers he instead talked about the stupid anime movie belle and gave it a f**king 9/10 and a responded to him on the comment section of the review and then he banned me off his letterboxd and how comes he thinks that this heist movie with a pretty good twist villian with great is just forgettable while this anime internet ralph breaks the internet garbage is somehow better this proves he's just spouting out bulls**t and spreading dirt on dreamworks and American animation's reputation just to spite me, back then i thought he was a nice guy like ls mark but now i realised james's just as much of a a**hole as jonathin enter a guy he has hated on and i still think schaffrilas productions is still a pretty good channel but back in 2020 i would say he was one of the greatest youtube channels of all time and now i'm exited for the walt disney animation studios and illumination rankings but i wondering after those rankings and the mario movie what's next other then maybe a nickelodean movies and warner animation group ranking and will he do no more American animated movie videos and just do anime and marvel and star wars videos because if that is the future i will not care about what schaffrilas does anymore and unsubscribe and no longer watch his new videos unless if it's a grevios and sid episode or new video on a new animated movie video so i maybe unsubscribe from his channel fall next year.
It’s definitely the colors that you missed talking about, the colors in the 2018 version are so washed out. Which I get it’s real life but good could you not up the saturation a little more like real life definitely looks better than this. Like it’s just… kinda sad it feels kind of sad and dead, which is not something I should feel while watching the lion king. The colors in the original are so vibrant fun and fit the atmosphere perfectly.
Sometimes I enjoy these remakes in a way, mostly for the animation and designs of the characters. It just makes it feel like I’m really in the story because I know what these animals look like. It’s cool to see what these iconic characters would look like back in their natural form. But not when it’s like this.
It truly genuinely just looks like the voices are coming from somewhere off screen and the lions are all just also there going 😐
