I've seen it described before that the original lion king is almost religious in it's overtones and presentation of itself and the themes it represents. The ceremony with Simba, Mufasa in the skies, the focus on the circle of life, it all feels so grand and magnificent without being overbearing or corny. You can tell the animators and writers put every last bit of love into this movie.
The 2019 film loses every last drop of that. It's completely soulless, it's lifeless, it's not passionate or caring about it's own themes at all. You watch the interviews with the actors and no one cared about their performance at all. That's not to mention the constant and ear grating mentions of Beyonce that are clearly just there to market the movie more by slapping a big name on the IP. John Favrue just wanted to flex tech capabilities by going on and on about making the remake look like a documentary. It's so depressing.
You know that saying, turn water into wine? Disney took the wine their animators and writers already made, and turned it into dish water.

Freaking Aslan from the Narnia movies, which are nearly 20 years old, had more expressive features. You can see the sadness, the pride, the anger in Aslan's face. You know what he's thinking. And lions IRL are super expressive! They snarl, they even "smile". This movie was so bad that it had unrealistic realistic lions.

At 11:44, I was like "Yup! This guy gets it!"
I was SIX when I saw this movie for the first time on VHS in 1995. So yeah, you can guess my age (turned 32 last month). I had the unfortunate privilege to see the CGI version in cinemas because I was holding on hope that they wouldn't screw up. The only way I could be "allowed" to critique it is by watching it. The room was, obviously, full of families with children probably a little too young to get it. I didn't get the message until I was 9-10. So yeah, a grown-ass man of 30 watched "nostalgia" with his grown-ass brother and wonderful mother around 5-6 years old kids. That grown-ass man had to hold himself from laughing with a hand over his mouth to respect the audience because that's the only way I could process how bad the entire movie was AND IT IS!!! And as much as I love my family, they didn't understand why I didn't like it. Yup: the camera-style techniques, the personality, the over-explanation, the nuances all replaced by pandering. If I were alone in the theaters, I would have left after "Be Prepared".
I would encourage anyone with a bit of passion for Disney Renaissance to take a look at the original making of narrated and presented by Robert Guillaume (bless his soul), the voice of Rafiki. It's just wonderful! "The Lion King: The Making of a Walt Disney Masterpiece"
I still have the VHS, I still have a Simba puppet plush and, that same year (2019), I went to a music store just looking for discs and I saw the soundtrack for The Lion King 2019 and was offended... I was trying to move it behind the classic version to make sure kids and families would see the old one and then I saw The Legacy Collection 2-disc pack. Of course I bought it since I used to have the cassette tape!!!

When you realize in the scene where Simba follows Rafiki, not only is he going left to right, but they often show Rafiki going right to left in the next cut several times. This results in confusing the audience as to who is where. They look like they're running in different directions.
They managed to screw up the 180 rule during a CHASE scene. Even film students get that right in simple dialogue scenes. The filmmaking of soap operas is built almost solely on this one fundamental, basic rule: don't flip the camera's POV so far that interacting characters look like they're focused away from each other.
This half a billion dollar film couldn't get it right.

How I would fix this movie to make it watchable. (I don't care how many people try to kill me for this)
    1. give the characters their facial expression back.
    2. recast it. (especially James earl jones, beyonce, and Jon Oliver)
    3. cut out all the unneeded footage. (I had to say GET ON WITH IT endlessly)
    4. make the musical numbers at least more energetic (having the animals just walk and run was pathetic)
    5. use the Broadway music and songs (He lives in you should've been played instead of beyonces lame shit)
    6. the movie would not be a shot-for-shot remake of the original (Go ahead and shoot my head off and see if that changes anything)
    7. resaturate the colors (it doesn't have to be so cartoony but at least vibrant enough to look visually pleasing)
    8. make Be Prepared longer and better (the altered lyrics can stay)
    9. Have Can You Feel The Love TONIGHT sung at night.
    10. fix the stampede so it's more suspenseful and more intense
    11. force the audience to get over that it wouldn't be a shot-for-shot remake.
    12. use deleted scenes and storyboards concept ideas from the original movie.
    13. Leave in the most important scenes and heartwarming moments from the original while trying to be different.
    14. Bring special security with me if people start rioting and hating me for changing the story.

Personally I took Mufasa talking to Simba about the stars more of a take on loneliness than a religious view on death itself. "when ever you feel alone look at the stars and remember the kings of the past will be there to guide you and so will I". Sure it feels very spiritual and fantastical with Mufasa actually appearing in the clouds, I think Rafiki points us into the first interpretation with "look harder, he lives in you" right before he actually sees Mufasa in the water and the clouds and cloud Mufasa telling him "you have forgotten who you are and so forgotten me".
On the remake, id say a big problem is that it doesnt look realistic or magical. Its like says Tim Burtons color palette is realistic. That opening sky? Ive seen far more impressive and beautiful skies at dawn from my window in the city, nature has a habit of looking far more magical than we give it credit for. The lions, cats are very expressive animals, they have expressive faces, expressive body language, its like these people have never seen lions interact with how blank they are, they are social animals, they communicate with each other, they have instictual behavior. And also on the design of the lions and lionesses, there are lions with gorgeous unique facial fur coloring and gorgeous manes. If I just google images of lions theres tons of beautiful lions with unique colors that look way better than the lions in this movie.

I'm thoroughly convinced that if anyone who thinks this film is good had not seen the original Lion King prior to watching the remake, they wouldn't think it was good, at all. Yes, it looks realistic and it's very cool that CGI has come this far, but that's about it that this film has going for it.

My favorite moment in the original was when Rafiki explains to Simba that his father's legacy lives on within him. Nala has reminded him of his past and introduced doubt in his 'easy' way of life, but lacked the wisdom and the patience that Rafiki has shown helping Simba overcome his fear and guilt. When faced with Simba's frustration over getting mislead at the lake he asks him to look again and helps him realize his destiny. "Look harder" is etched into my memory. Too bad the new version has butchered both damn scenes!

I love your guys' commentary on the 2019 version. They ruined my favorite Disney movie of all time with the CGI remake of the same movie. I was laughing throughout your commentary because I had the same thoughts when I saw it in theaters too. Glad I am not the only one to see the trash of this film. Chronicles of Narnia had better CGI animation in that film of a lion, and that was back in 2007 or 2008. And Aslan even fricken emoted when he went to sacrifice himself before the queen to save Emmit. And I would say, I was hugely disappointed in that film, and it pained me to give my honest opinion and critique it negatively. I will say, The Jungle Book remake was actually really well done. It used the baseboard of the original 1961 animated film and made it its own story and movie. And actually kind of close to the original story by Rudyard Kipling, just without the dark ending, because face it, it is still a Disney movie. Yes, the animals in there look real, but one thing that the movie did right and the lion king didn't. The animals fricken emoted. When Sher Khan was annoyed that Mogli wasn't dead and he left the jungle when Akila told him he left the jungle and was no longer part of the wolf pack, Sher Khan's ear twitched. It is the equivalent of someone twitching their eyes to hold back the urge of latching out. And you felt the sheer power of dominance in Sher Khan in the 2016 version.
I would also love to point out that Hans Zimmer also did the film score for Spirit Stallion of the Cimarron, and The Prince of Egypt. Two other great fantastic animated films and The Prince of Egypt is my God another work of art for an animated film, it is a forgotten masterpiece that should deserve much credit too as the lion king.

One thing I despise about the lion king remake is timone and pumba.
    1. Timone and Pumba are self aware of their brand. They're stinkin nobodies that NOBODY wants to be around. That's their entire deal! So them having a record of how people react to their brand DEFEATS THEM BEING OUTCASTS.
    2. On the topic of Timone and Pumba being outcasts, WHY DO THEY HAVE FRIENDS? Again, Pumba stinks and Timone is...Timone. Who would want to be around them other than Simba who didn't have any better options.
    3. They make every joke last way too long. Every. Single. Line. It lasts far too long to remain funny. It keeps devolving into improv rambling humor that rumors the sharp, witty humor they kept on expanding on to ruin. One of the worst offenders is nihilist Timone, like, he coulda just laughed in Simba's face and left at that, but no, he has to go into detail how he views how life works and drags out the joke until it isn't funny anymore.
    4. THEY JUST KEEP TALKING, OMG, A QUARTER OF THE ADDED RUNTIME IS JUST TIMONE AND PUMBA NOT BEING FUNNY PLEASE SHUT UP
    5. The jokes just keep being too on the nose. When Simba is asking what's on the menu, the representatives of what he was asking saying "please dont eat me" with each item ruins the joke. Another reason why Timone and Pumba shouldn't have friends.

But I take this as his eye color is matching Mufasa's in this scene as he's staring into the past and confronting his spirit, in order to become more like him and be the King he's meant to be.

@@FilmTheRightThing they really did. I remember watching this wanting to give it the benefit of the doubt and yeah the "new" version of the song is just terrible and the movie as a whole is held back so hard by trying to be realisitc

The discussion of the best Disney movie, in my opinion, is between The Lion King and Beauty and The Beast. Both of them are animated so well. The visuals enhance the story, and they both engage their themes perfectly. Both 10/10 for me.
