Tesco was founded by T. E. Stockwell, a tea supplier and Jack Cohen, a grocer, the name Tesco is derived from Stockwell's initials and the first letter of his surname TES, the CO part is the first two letters of Cohen. The T. E. Stockwell brand is Tesco's value range for people who are on a budget, they also have a "Jack's" brand of budget priced food. I used to take a can of Tesco's Hot Chicken Curry to work for my lunch, I'm now retired so I don't buy it any more.Thank you for your interesting review Gareth.
The 'Jacks' brand comes from a small number of 'Jack's' branded stores. I think there are around 10 throughout the country. The aim was to create a competitor to Aldi & Lidl but ultimately they did not continue. There is one about 6 miles from where I live in the next town. It was converted from the Tesco but they laid all the existing staff off and took on new people on less desirable contracts than Tesco staff had. I don't think that they have been seen as a success TBH.
@@BaldFoodieGuy on the front of the label at the top left it says "exclusively for tesco". Tesco have another own brand called "hearty food co." and their croquette potatoes are very good and about 1/4 the price of branded ones.
Stockwell is the old Tesco Value range under a new name. They have different names for different genres of products now, like Stockwell, Hearty Food Co, Ms Molly's, Woodside Farm and more :) They are all the old Tesco Value ranges :)
The stockwell curry jumped from 59p up to £1 in a matter of weeks. It taste a lot like Tesco veg curry and there used to be a 91p difference which made it a real lockdown bargain.
Another month on and the Stockwell's is £1.19, the Tesco Chicken Curry is £1.60. I compared a selection of foods bought in Tesco 3 days ago food with the prices 6 months ago and the cost had jumped by just over £5 for it all. Food prices is getting crazy.
Hello there Gareth, I love Yorkshire Gold tea. 💕 I'm going to try that chicken 🐔 curry, don't mind peas in mine, I'll be 66 this year. Golden oldie, I'll be supping mine up. See you Friday
I do like vegetables in my curry! Potatoes and cauliflower come to mind. But what I like most is something that a lot of people think is weird -- salad with curry! Just the normal curry and rice, but with some lettuce, tomato and onion on the side. Lovely!
Stockwell & Co. is a brand owned by Tesco and is used for general groceries. Whichever you buy they make money. Tried it but preferred the meat quality and the spice blend in the Tesco own brand.
Good God Man! 1-2 vids a day?! I've now placed you in my morning ritual of News, Media, FH5 and meds! Thank You Sir! I've Even managed to interest the Missy in your site! 👍💖
Interesting. It's good to keep a few tins at home for emergency purposes 🙂What I would really love to see you cooking a simple curry and then compare the tinned ones to it, that would be cool.
I work for a well known supermarket as a delivery driver. Not mentioning which one as you did already in this comparison haha. I still think of the Stockwell brand as the Value range - which it is, just given a name! I often get the value curry at lunch time with a pouch of rice. Good hearty lunch on a cold day and the veg makes me think its a bit healthier too. I have very often been pleasantly surprised by the value range, not everything, but its worth trying as you can save a little here and there and afford a treat with those savings. Keep the videos coming Gareth, your channel has become one of my most enjoyed!
The Stockwell or 'Value' range of food can be much nicer, and always cheaper. We always stock up on their baked beans. We much prefer them to Tesco, Heinz etc. As for your beer on Friday Gareth, personally I shop at Aldi for booze. A good choice, keener prices, same taste as your well known brands, both in lagers and beer. I personally drink ale well chilled. Even Red wine. Remember, when they recommended drinking it at room temperature many moons ago, there was no central heating etc.
I think....fantastic. Just stumbled onto your videos. Good to have reviews on everyday essentials. My wife was watching with me and she agrees price doesn't always determine quality or favour.
Had the tesco curry for tea in me truck last night OK with some rice plenty of chicken in it bit of tabasco was ok its a meal anyway especially when you can't get some food on the road

Thanks again good video like all your stuff is really like😊👍
I was in Aldi today, I could hear you saying, "I've been shopping, I been to Aldi come and have a look what I got", then going around the shop looking for what you have bought over the videos, it was fun and made my shopping trip more entertaining. I would be happy with a live vlog whenever your ready, but please don't have too much beer that you make a mistake while trimming your beard lol, but as you say, it grows back. Take care!
i have a tin of the stockwell chicken curry in my cupboard that ive been wary of eating for some mad reason but after your reviewtonights tea is now curry and rice ,another brilliant video gareth and a happy new year to you and your family x
"It's Ten Bob cheaper....... Fifty Pence..." You are obviously an "Old Money" guy like me, great video ......TBH I tend to make my own curries and I add veggies to them and I find carrots are pretty awesome, the taste that they take on is quite unexpected .
I tried an Aldi Bramwell's mild chicken tinned curry last night. I had rice with it and mango chutney. Like yours the chicken sort of fell apart, but the sauce was gorgeous. I added some chilli to it.
G'day Gareth good review. The Stockwell brand is also Tesco if you look at label. They make a range of products under Stockwell label. I get some of them here in OZ too. So you reviewed two Tesco products. Not a great deal of difference, both tasty, prices ok. Fair chance both are made for Tesco at the same supplier's factory. Chicken Curry in a can would be grand for a winter's day in England. Put some rice with it. From me a 7/10 on pricing, flavour, overall product. Keep up the good work young fella.
That Stockwell brand is Tesco still. They rebranded all Tesco Value to various ‘brands’ but they are still Tesco Value. Stockwell and Ms Mollys are two examples
If you have frozen curry dishes, try them. I don’t know if we have curry in cans in Canada, I usually make mine from scratch. Our national brand PC or President’s Choice is good, great when you don’t feel like cooking. Try making Filipino chicken adobo, it’s an easy and delicious meal, doesn’t need as many spices as a curry. Sometimes when the meat is like a sponge, it may have a bicarbonate of sorts in it, if I marinate my meat, I’ll use cornstarch instead. I enjoy the channel, you certainly give me a chuckle.
Nice review must admit I eat either on my jacket potatoes 👍🏻 If you’re gonna try a beer my go to ale is Theakstons Old Peculiar lurvley 👍🏻👍🏻 See you on you live 🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺
I would so get a spoon to scrap out everything from the can. Good spices. The cheap one as you said it's got veg which is a time saving on doing that meal. I think I too would like to try that one out. Thanks
If moneys tight (and I think it will be for many for a while) the cheaper one looked nice enough.£1 for the Curry,35p for a micro rice,25p for a Naan=£1-60 for a filling, tasty, easy meal sounds good to me.
Makes me laugh when people say wouldn't eat canned but eat ready meals, just different packages, like soup pay more in chiller cabinet, it's the same as canned,
lol, trimming beard with a beer cracked me up i did that once never again lol , ps like you mate i am proud to be northern ( bill huddersfield ) keep them coming we need this stuff bang on mate .
Never really been a fan of tinned meals but tried Tesco Chilli con carne the other day and was pleasantly suprised, great for a quick fill up when you get the munchies, but don't forget to have Garlic bread with it, no rice needed 😋😋
I really thought the Stockweel would be horrible....just shows ya..in fact I'm going to get a tin of each and have half a tin each me and the missus. .Thanks Mate

For Friday see if you can get some Mythos larger it’s Greek and your love it . Asda sells it . See you on the next one ☝️ thanks Buddy 👍
Well the stockwells curry looks familiar I'm sure I stepped over it on the pavement outside our local drinking establishment lol and the tescos own looks far better in my opinion 😉 I don't mind a bit of onion in a curry and you need to try tescos Chinese style chicken curry in a tub its not too shabby and perfect for the microwave keep up the good work and stay safe out there young man from joff the trucker
I don’t eat Chicken but in the same range as the £1.50 Curry I love the Tesco Beef Curry £1.50 & the Tesco Vegetable Curry £1.50 Both I recommend you try. Great review as always also thank you for your friendly support when I wasn’t feeling we’ll take care.
Funny you did the canned curry from tesco I don't often get tinned curry but I thought I'd give it a go when you said stockwell curry reminded you of cat good I got up had a look in cupboard and yes I got a stockwell curry I've had stockwell other stuff and I can't tell difference from other makes I got the curry thinking for a lazy tea I'd do micro rice and the curry glad you said the stock well was nice if you hadn't it would of sat in my cupboard for ever and a day love fran
in my opinion, i would say that the more expensive one has a lot more chicken than the cheap one, which is better worth for your money since chicken is more expensive than the vegetables in the cheap tin. 👍👍👍
G'day Gareth. Well one has more chicken and the other more veggies. Might as well buy both and mix them in the pot 🤔👍. Veggies in a curry depends on the variety of curry and meat used. No veggies with a beef curry, but yes with lamb and chicken. Asian style veggies with prawn/seafood curry is a must have. I made a Ninja Foodi slow cook lamb curry the other day, it had potato, carrot and onion and the peas I added to the coconut rice before serving 👍🤤😀 delicious. No No sultanas for me 😖. Trimming the beard? Maybe a #1 Cut and keep it trendy. Beers? How about a few Abotts or Adnams...or something dark and malty👍😉. Well my friend, another great review today. Cheers mate 👍😀🇦🇺 Fourth Cricket Test starts today. How will England fair..🤔
Stockwell's tea bags are really good - on a par with Tetley or Typhoo, and only slightly below PG Tips - seriously. They are the only ones I drink now, and I'm definitely NOT usually one who likes the taste of cheap tea bags, such as Asda's own brand or similar. 👍☕
Interesting! If I make a prawn curry, I don't add veg, only tomatoes. For chicken, I might have spuds, carrots, and cauliflower. Perhaps you could do a 'samosa off'?
I'm sure that Stockwell brand is sold in lidl or adli. During lockdown I got some beans and spaghetti from lidl or aldi of that brand, and they weren't too bad The Tesco curry though definitely looks better and worth an extra 50p than the Stockwell curry
Never tried tinned curry before but will do now!! I used to love the Irish stew in a tin you ever tried that? And on Friday try a few bottles of desperado 👍🙌 I love them me tequila beer it is gorgeous
Yes please go live Friday I have just shared you with my group of 500 and my hubby group of 4650 so hope all 5000 all join you . We do use Stockwell's sauces but we have Morrisons deliver via amazon now as I have caught the naughty bug, so I am in isolation until next Sunday
got to say Stockwell products are yes cheap but they fill the belly and save money and are not bad for what they are. Got alot of Stockwell in my store cupboards.
Not tried any of these before Gareth, although the Tesco one looks better especially for bread dipping, although I'd pour any of them over chips. I've been in a couple of Indian restaurants where you have potato in Chicken Vindaloo?!? Up for Friday night pal, count me in 👍👍👍
Tesco used to do a Veg curry for 50p. I normally do veg curry from scratch with rice it takes about 25 mins and costs less than 50p for a family. So in this case i would go for the 1.50 one because its a chicken curry rather than a veg curry with chicken! I see that Tescos are selling all the ready meal tins for 1.50 now, curry, stew etc i'm sure they used to be all different prices! Still good to take to work to store in the desk with microwave rice for when you forget your packed lunch!
Okay nice tie with flavour then the price is right so worth a punt to try. Okay next challenge to add a cheeky grin. Gillette or Wilkinson for the friday test should be hair raising and a nice hot chilly aftershave. Spot On.
Again. I think you need to taste these on either rice or a naan bread, maybe with fresh onion over ? I always use potatoes, especially in a chicken curry ,it's a natural thickener.....although I love a good homemade, there is a market for the tinned......another good effort from you mate ....keep it up
That was a surprise I thought you would only manage one spoonful of the Stockwell. Like you said it's looked like a bowl of chunky soup. If you shave your beard of on Friday don't use a cut-throat after a few beer🤒😂😂
Never tasted those before. I thought that the cheaper one looked like cardboard going by the picture on the can. Friday night would be good. As for beer, why not go old school and get Mcewens Export. Or try getting some of Clarksons Lager
Both looked ok and the chances are they are made in the same food factory just need pimping up if you like it hot as for vegetables I like potatoe in a vindaloo but no supermarket brands have them in so it's either add your own or go to the takeaway as they add them 👍👍🥘🥘🌶🌶🥔🥔
Stockwell curry looks more like a soup or a tin of chicken stew prefer the look of the tesco one best more expensive but looks better. Thanks Gareth for the review I would go for the tesco one though but if you are on a budget and for value go for Stockwell. Cheaper curry I suppose is better than no curry at all if you are on a budget 👍
Gareth the Stockwell one looked like Pedigree Chum, Top Breeders recommend it. I must admit I like the tin of Tesco Beef Curry that is £1.50. I would like them to do a Lamb one.
@@BaldFoodieGuy to be honest Gareth the Tesco Stockwell Range is well worth it. They do coffee, crisps, weetabix and jam etc. All good value for the money.
Hi Gareth. I’m not a fan of the tinned curries, I hope to make my own again sometime soon. I make a nice Jalfrezzi (not super hot hot) but medium hot. I don’t like sultanas or fruits in curries either. I’m having a right moan aren’t I 😂 😂 If pushed I’d have the Tesco’s own brand though. Friday night sounds good to me, as I enjoy your livestream chats ❤️ 😘 xx

Cheers Stephen I've to look at 😋👍👍
Interesting! If I make a prawn curry, I don't add veg, only tomatoes. For chicken, I might have spuds, carrots, and cauliflower.
Perhaps you could do a 'samosa off'?
Loved the honesty in your conclusion.
I'm sure that Stockwell brand is sold in lidl or adli. During lockdown I got some beans and spaghetti from lidl or aldi of that brand, and they weren't too bad
The Tesco curry though definitely looks better and worth an extra 50p than the Stockwell curry
Not tried these but the Aldi hot chicken curry is very good. First thing I thought was the Stockwell looks like a tin of Felix cat food!
Yes I've reviewed the Aldi chicken hot curry 😋😋
Never tried tinned curry before but will do now!! I used to love the Irish stew in a tin you ever tried that? And on Friday try a few bottles of desperado 👍🙌 I love them me tequila beer it is gorgeous
Cheers Karen. Not had that very before 🍻🍻🍻
Yes please go live Friday I have just shared you with my group of 500 and my hubby group of 4650 so hope all 5000 all join you . We do use Stockwell's sauces but we have Morrisons deliver via amazon now as I have caught the naughty bug, so I am in isolation until next Sunday
Cheers Jeff that's very kind of you. Yes will do then. Let's get the beers in 🍻🍻🍻👍
I have seen the Stockell brand in Tesco and think it was not good but this taste test makes me re-think buying it. The chicken curry looks good.
Cheers, yes was ok, full of vegetables
got to say Stockwell products are yes cheap but they fill the belly and save money and are not bad for what they are. Got alot of Stockwell in my store cupboards.
Hi Martin. Hope you are well. Happy New year pal 😋👍
Produced in the U.K., using chicken from Thailand
Not tried any of these before Gareth, although the Tesco one looks better especially for bread dipping, although I'd pour any of them over chips. I've been in a couple of Indian restaurants where you have potato in Chicken Vindaloo?!? Up for Friday night pal, count me in 👍👍👍
Cheers John. Hope you are on the mend 👍👍👍
I like to use several of the cheap tins with leftover chicken over rice, quick easy cheat of a meal.
I but both if these.. the cheaper one is really nice.. we have it with chips for a random tea x
Yes it's tasty isn't it 😋😋👍
Tesco used to do a Veg curry for 50p.
Cheers 😋👍
Hi I like tesco tinned massage curry I havnt tried Stock well but I will try it now thank you
thanks 😊
What what ! I don't know !
I wouldn't have believed this.
I have avoided Stockwell brand you have given me a
short sharp lesson Garath 👌
Thanks Lyndax
Who would replace tasty looking chicken with veg?? 🤦♂️😂
Yes depends what you like Lynda. We are all different. Gives you a heads up that's what it's all about. 👍👍
Stockwell baked beans and sausage, lovely,
Not tried them yet 😋😋👍
Windy loo no thanx😵😂🥵🥵. These curries look ok gareth.😃.good review again boss.🙋♂️🙋♂️👍😋
Thank you 😋👍
Going to Tesco's is the highlight of my week
Okay nice tie with flavour then the price is right so worth a punt to try. Okay next challenge to add a cheeky grin. Gillette or Wilkinson for the friday test should be hair raising and a nice hot chilly aftershave. Spot On.
Haha
Again. I think you need to taste these on either rice or a naan bread, maybe with fresh onion over ?
I always use potatoes, especially in a chicken curry ,it's a natural thickener.....although I love a good homemade, there is a market for the tinned......another good effort from you mate ....keep it up
Cheers Nick 😋👍👍
I would never buy tinned meat but that looks nice!
They both look very appetizing, For different reasons. I'd just chuck them in together, For best of both worlds.
Cheers Stuart, I had the cheap one my good lady had the expensive one 😋😋👍
@@blackbob3358 Thank you! Obviously, I need to learn to be less "Facile" in the future, When making comments on youtube.
tesco one looks spot on
The tesco chicken curry ,jalfrezi ,& korma are badass .But for chilli con carne it has to be the Stagg dynamite chilli con carne .Great review.
Nah not for me mate. Stagg overpriced ,beef is weird.
Great video as always ! How do these compare to the aldi curry's in a can ?
I tried the Aldi hot curry, it was a totally different curry with coconut milk.
Will definitely give that a go thanks
Love peas in my curry or abit of 🥕 had a suggestion on whar to try next all day breakfasts tesco do a chilled and frozen version 😀
Thanks for the tip!
That was a surprise I thought you would only manage one spoonful of the Stockwell. Like you said it's looked like a bowl of chunky soup. If you shave your beard of on Friday don't use a cut-throat after a few beer🤒😂😂
Haha no, good idea lol 😁👍
Never tasted those before. I thought that the cheaper one looked like cardboard going by the picture on the can. Friday night would be good. As for beer, why not go old school and get Mcewens Export. Or try getting some of Clarksons Lager
Cheers Andy, yes will look out for it 🍺🍺
Both looked ok and the chances are they are made in the same food factory just need pimping up if you like it hot as for vegetables I like potatoe in a vindaloo but no supermarket brands have them in so it's either add your own or go to the takeaway as they add them 👍👍🥘🥘🌶🌶🥔🥔
Cheers Robert, yes stock a load of chilli in stockwell it has potatoes like you said pimp it up 😋😋
Stockwell curry looks more like a soup or a tin of chicken stew prefer the look of the tesco one best more expensive but looks better. Thanks Gareth for the review I would go for the tesco one though but if you are on a budget and for value go for Stockwell. Cheaper curry I suppose is better than no curry at all if you are on a budget 👍
Cheers Jonathan yes it looks like a big soup curry lol
Hi Gareth, hope everything is grand with you. When is that fuzz coming off your face? 😬
...Should have watched the whole video before asking 😄
@@rjpender70 😁 A wee bit of stubble is good but that beard is making Gareth look like Grizzly Adams 😄
You should compare Sainsbury’s Chinese chicken curry with Lidls hot chicken curry. They both have exactly the same ingredients and taste identical.
Great suggestion!
Gareth the Stockwell one looked like Pedigree Chum, Top Breeders recommend it. I must admit I like the tin of Tesco Beef Curry that is £1.50. I would like them to do a Lamb one.
Haha yes it did Lee lol
@@BaldFoodieGuy to be honest Gareth the Tesco Stockwell Range is well worth it. They do coffee, crisps, weetabix and jam etc. All good value for the money.
Ya can't go wrong with some holsten pils lager beer mate... Cheap and very tasty 👌🏻 green and yellow tins 🍻
Oh yes!
Friday live Gareth... see if you can get "purple moose" ales, brewed in Snowdonia, North Wales.
Cheers Joanne yes I'm going live Friday at 8 see you then xx
Curry powder might help the cheap curry along a bit?
I would imagine the Tesco’s one would keep you satisfied for longer as there is more protein in it
yes good shout
