“Game Changer” British Military’s New DragonFire Laser To Shoot Down Russian Drones

  • The British military is ramping up efforts to have all the bells and whistles to compete against the world's best armies.
    Their latest investment is a military laser called the 'DragonFire' weapon, which will be used to shoot down Russian drones in Ukraine. It had previously been reported that the laser would be able to hit targets the size of a coin from miles away.
    Former British Army Colonel Hamish de Bretton-Gordon joins TalkTV's Maddie Hale to discuss what the weapon is and how crucial it is for Ukraine!
    The DragonFire weapon, which is expected to be ready for deployment by 2027 at the latest, could have “huge ramifications” for the conflict in Europe, the Defence Secretary said.
    New reforms aimed at speeding up procurement mean the laser, originally set to be rolled out in 2032, will now be operational five years earlier than planned, according to the Ministry of Defence.
    The MoD hopes the DragonFire system will offer a low-cost alternative to missiles by carrying out tasks such as shooting down attack drones.
    Ukraine’s energy infrastructure was targeted in overnight missile and drone attacks on Thursday, with more than 200,000 people around Kharkiv left without power, foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba said.

    Anyone keeps track of "game changers"? first it was Javelins and Stingers, then M777, then HIMARS, then Bradley Fighting Vehicles, then Challenger 2 and Leopard 2 tanks, then Storm shadows and Scalp cruise missiles, the water drones, ATACMS and 155mm cluster munitions, I am sure I forgot some, lost track of the "Game changers"
    I think biggest "game changer" was the attack on the concert hall.

    • @nerdyali4154
      @nerdyali4154 Před měsícem +3

      Some of those weapons were game changers. Storm Shadow and Scalp were a major part of making Crimea untenable for the Russian fleet and making life very unsafe for air bases there. HIMARS had a devastating impact on Russian logistics and troop concentrations. Bradleys have been VERY successful in Ukraine, cluster munitions munitions took a huge toll on the Russians and ATACMS have not been supplied in any quantity and not in the most effective variant, but they would undoubtedly have a huge impact. As for modernish tanks, the Ukrainians like them because they can be used more effectively to target Russians at a distance and at night. What you need to appreciate is the lack of quantity of those weapons.

    • @Nauda999
      @Nauda999 Před měsícem +1

      @@nerdyali4154 at the start when HIMARS started to get used in Ukraine it had significant impact and caused damage, but when was the last time you heard about HIMARS in the news? they have very little impact now, my guess because there are not many of them 10 maybe, with very limited supply of ammunition. Not to mention that Russians started jamming GPS signals in wide areas and learned to intercept these missiles better.
      So if this was a game changer what did it change?
      Same for Storm shadows and SCALPS, they did damage.
      But it will never get Russia to change the game.
      But things haven't changed much. Russian military is still there doing about the same what they did before.
      The real game change was US, UK and other countries giving thousands of drones, more than a million in 2023.
      That means can't hide anything, can't make big groups or swarm of drones will come in and blow everything up.

    • @Nauda999
      @Nauda999 Před měsícem +2

      @@nerdyali4154 "What you need to appreciate is the lack of quantity of those weapons."
      I think you are the one not appreciating the tiny amount of these systems used in Ukraine.
      For example there are 10 or heck, even 20 HIMARS launchers in Ukraine, and 50 STORM shadow + SCALP missiles.
      There are probably 200 HIMARS launchers situated on islands not far from Taiwan.
      Many airbases with hundreds of planes armed with all kinds of missiles including ones similar to STORM shadow + SCALP missiles.
      But let's wait year 2025 and see what gamechangers were HIMARS, Storm shadows, Bradleys.
      For every video with Bradleys shooting at the enemy I have seen two videos with pile of burning Bradleys, does that count as game changer?
      More Bradleys have been destroyed or damaged than the working Bradleys left in the world. There is a reason US gave Bradleys away, they were sitting in warehouses without much use anyways.
      Bradleys wouldn't be much use for US in war with Iran or China, that they don't have control of a land border with.

It fires and moves. It's also not deployed right at the front, you put it near critical targets to protect them, so it's going to be surrounded by other ground forces, and give them a shield effectively.

On the hand, drones are cheap and shooting them down with 60,000 dollar missiles becomes economic attrition, even if you do shoot them all down. So this is is a really interesting development.
