That highways chap done his job perfectly. Stopped a good distance back to provide protection, waved traffic to slow down while you worked on the offside of the car, and then when you needed to join back on the motorway he pulled out into lane 1 first giving protection to join too.
You also done a great job too, efficient but safe.
Highways lad is definitely on the ball, never taking his eye off the oncoming traffic. Safety is clearly his priority. Surprised Greg didn’t mention it based on his last dealings with them 😅
Considering he looks on the younger side, he's probably new-ish. They're always the best ones to have to be honest, because they have the training fresh in their minds still. People prefer older ones because they have "more experience" but in my opinion I'd rather take the younger newer freshly trained ones. They also have less bad habits.. as you said, his eyes were always on the traffic and where Mr GDB was. Didn't look at his phone, didn't start a conversation.. did his job exactly.
Slowing down doesn't make it safer as other drivers are in lanes 2-4, all it causes is rubber necking and Pepole looking causing crashes
I know others have said it but hats off to that highways patrol, very vigilant and went to the offside with you for more visibility to cars in lane one.
Excellent to see both the Recovery and Highways guys working together in sync

Annoyingly the last one to be built is right up my neck of the woods on the M6 around Warrington and Wigan. To make things worse, the works have been extended until Spring 2025 after having started in late 2020/early 2021. It will actually be strange not having to average 50mph when they finally finish the damn thing.
They have not stopped they are doing more on the M6 north but say it is safety sign improvements a blatant lie as they have 20 plus miles of average speed cameras at 50mph.
Makes a nice change to see everything working together to give a good result, helps when you know what to do in such a situation.

Nice recovery mate. Great bit of kit. And Highways sent a top lad along by the looks of it. Nice to see him watching your back while you strapped the O/S. only thing I spotted was the trade plates in the cars windows means as a recovery driver for the largest recovery company he’d have got a lift to the nearest safe place and then it’d be commercial charges.
Loved the highways guy was watching your back whilst you was working. One thing I do when putting the customers in the cab is say "watch I dont bash you with the door when I close it" They are usually half in and working out where to sit. Great video
we watch in our club at weekend over 500 on a sunday afternoon , We need more Mrs GDB for sure .

What a great bit of team work the National Highways seemed friendly and helpful, real quick recovery and for most drivers they seemed to follow the lane closure.
These motorways need to go back to "dumb" motorways it was so much safer. Keep safe and well!

The Highways Agency did their job wonderfully this time. That meant that the time you and the customer spent at the side of a busy motorway was kept to the absolute minimum. Less time sitting there also means decreasing the risk potential, although it should never be forgotten that an accident can happen within a split-second of pulling to the side of the road as I'm sure you know better than most of us.

Who but an utter moron would sit at a desk and devise a new road where there is NO refuge following a breakdown, then call it a "Smart Motorway", there is NOTHING "smart" about it. "Smart" motorways are just like smart meters, someone forgot to put "Not Very" at the front of their name.
Smart means connected to the internet , not clever, these roads are not intended for humans to drive on , they are ultimately intended for automated driverless cars which will have distance monitoring and crash avoidance technology. Makes more sense now , eh. Globalists . !
The worst part is when something does happen, the emergency services now get stuck on the queue, rather than being able to go down the hard shoulder.

Hisghways Agency chap gets top marks for this one, couldn't have timed it better if it was rehersed. VOSA need an opticians appointment for not spotting the obvious when you passed through their depot.

spec lift looks better on the iveco chassis was to heavy for the transit. looks a good jab well done. like your message at the end slow down and move over. been told recovery trucks can have red flashing lights when stationery recovering a vehicle before long. we've been using a single red flashing light for years. on the rear of our truck.
@6.43, quite correct, I've seen signage from junc 15 as far down as the Toll Road & there was nothing causing a problem, I complied all the way, and you wonder why some ignore them when there is no problem, I rang Highways & said doesn't anyone look at the camera's & see there is no problem & this is why people ignore them which puts peoples lives at risks when there is an incident!

I’m in two minds about smart motorways. I get the point about it taking time to close the lane if it’s obstructed by a breakdown. However we have hundreds of miles of dual carriageways. They have the same speed limit as motorways but no hard shoulder or refuges, often narrower lanes, more frequent junctions and no automated systems looking for obstructions. They’re often just as busy as motorways and yet no-one is suggesting turning one of the lanes into a hard shoulder.

Up North on the A1 the highways guys and galls block the lane and put 100yds of cones out behind their car to get traffic moving across , they don't just rely on the flashing lights .
I use a set of low ramps with a cut out section for the spec to sit down in on my truck .
Just a 3ft x 8" sheet of 3mm tin on the bottom with the ramp raising from zero to 5" over 2ft then around a 4" gap then the 8" x 8" x 5" high box with a slightly concave top - all welded on the 3ft base of 3mm tin .
Place the ramps infront of each wheel and extend the spec frame to the gap in the ramps and drop it to the ground so the raised block is in the spec frame where the wheel will go .
Winch / push the car up and across the gap where the frame drops in till it's sitting on the raised block with a concave top .
Raise the spec frame and get the straps on .
Ramps back in the truck .
Unloading is even easier , place the ramps and drop the wheels on the raised block - get in the car and give a push with your right leg and they roll straight off and you can steer / brake as it rolls back .
Way better than jacking , especially with the modern plastic undertrays etc .
Just because I've noticed it in the one screen text of many your videos (so not just a typo on this one), have a quick read of up the difference between your and you're. It's something I didn't know for years and I cringe now thinking how many times I got it wrong. Also families not 'familys'.
SO many, ignore the gantry boards. Regularly see vehicles still driving in lanes marked with a Red X. Either in too much of a rush or just can't be bothered. Additionally the people that control the boards as well. Often the works or hazard has been removed and the boards still saw the lane is blocked.
Apparently there is going to be some carraigeway work done on the M5 very soon which I believe is to build some more refuse areas!

Ime just asking. When you turn up to a job site. Do you turn the front wheels of recovery vehicle inwards to inbankment. So vehicle gets pushed away from all traffic. That was a good safe recovery

the smart motorways are a lot safer than a typical dual carriageway such as A1 with no layby's hard shoulder and no matrix signs

I thought cameras were supposed to monitor smart motorways , so if you broke down you would be spotted !! See you going through Doxey most days !!
Well thats what they tell us right...
that's actually incorrect - the roads are monitored by something called SVD (Stopped Vehicle Detection) they look like a white pod on the gantry signals and are spread across the network at intervals. The CCTV cameras are used to confirm reports but if SVD hasn't flagged the vehicle up, no automatic signals would be implemented and no alert would be given to the control room. There's over 50 cameras purely between J14/15 which would make it impossible to scan through them all at the same time. In this instance, SVD wouldn't have flagged it because the vehicle was still on the entry slip (you can tell this by the gap between the verge and LBS1 [Lane below signal 1 - basically lane 1] getting smaller and smaller..
Still a risk though but what a cracking job @GDBRescueandrecovery did to ensure his customer was safely dealt with!

I've broke down on a smart motorway and honestly it's the scariest thing that ever happened to me. It took them atleast 15 minutes to realise I was stopped dead on lane 1 which would have been the hard shoulder. I had to make a break for it to the get over the barrier then watched 15 minutes of people mostly in lorry's nearly rear ended my vehicle. How is that safe
I don't know why when calling 999 they can't just put you though to the highways control room as they can set the signals straight away and have a traffic officer on route. Same addage as a level crossing where the highway code tells you not to call 999 but use the phone as it contacts the signaller directly so they can stop all trains.

I used to be a full time carer for a wheelchair bound family member (sadly passed away in 2020) and they were terrified of travelling on a smart motorway how do you get them out and to a safe place, sadly have been let down by a large well known company (begging with R) who have Blue badge cover six hour wait (and they say they prioritize disabled customers) so watching your videos showing your fast response would have eliminated her fears
I have witnessed so many vehicles ignoring lane restriction including the "red x" which and only move when just feet away from a traffic officers vehicle. Yet the traffic officers never do anything about it. I remember once obeying the red x when I was in a hurry to get to hospital for my mothers last hours of life. It took me three hours to travel just one mile. A lorry decided they red x di not apply to him and drove straight through the closed lane trying to push into the queue only when he was upon the problem which the traffic officer was attending. When I continued driving in the lane that I was supposed to be in, the driver of the lorry gave me rude gestures held his hand on the horn and constantly flashed his lights, then keeping the lights on high beam to try to bling me from behind! I assume this was because this was because he did not want to be delayed. I actually did not make it to the Hospital before my Mother died alone!

When the police and highways work with you recovery ops the job is done quicker and safer. In my opinion when a recovery is on the motorway the highways should always be there to assist

Well you generally know what it is or ask the questions first prior to booking on ie fwd rwd 4wd. I have tow dollys on the vehicle anyway if i needed to use them etc

why did that traffic officer behind you feel the need to cross a solid white line at 5.05 into the video then move back into the left hand lane. Are they not meant to comply with the law?
They have exemptions.
It will be more of the point of unsure exactly where the casualty vehicle is, ie situated in lane 1 , so he went into lane 1 to fend off that lane. Then in the distance he saw it was slip road so moved back over.

Before the Transport Minister authorises a Smart Motorway they should be made to agree to stage an unannounced breakdown. This would be with him as the driver, with his family on a rainy night. If he refuses, then no smart lane.

I think the smart motorways are a good idea. It the not smart people who think the rules don't apply to them. If a lane is closed or you have warning about moving over, MOVE OVER!!! people think a stranded vehicle is only in the left lane. A stranded vehicle can be in any lane.

The idea of smart motorways isn't the worst, but it is very badly implemented - you didn't get a lane closure, I don't know if they reduced speed for you; but nearly every time I drive the M5 section from Brum to Worcester there is are speed restrictions/hazard warnings but no hazards. It just doesn't quite work.
A large percentage of brake downs on motorways are drivers simply running out of petrol. Smart motorway or dumb drivers. Smart Motorways have emergency laybys. In 40 years of driving including 20 years as an HGV driver i have never suffered a sudden immediate vehicle failure that has caused the vehicle to stop instantly in a lane. There has always been some kind of prior warning allowing time to get to emergency lay-by. If drivers choose to ignore the warnings and try to carry on or fail to keep there vehicle properly maintained is that a fault of the Smart Motorway.

There a many dual carraigeways similar to smart motorways. If people think smart motorways are so dangerous then they shouldn't use the extra lane.
I had anxiety with you holding keys walking over drains! Gulp!. Must be a real buzz when everything clicks into place, like Thunderbirds but with real people! (sorry , Thunderbirds was kids programme on tv in the 1860's)
