- Moana is a phenomenal Disney Musical. The Rock, Jemaine Clement and Lin-Manuel Miranda did INCREDIBLE with Shiny (From "Moana")! In my "Jemaine Clement - Shiny (from Moana)" reaction I listen to one of the most surprising Disney songs.
I'm a radio DJ reacting to Jemaine Clement - Shiny (from Moana) since it should've been on the radio in the US! Watch "Jemaine Clement - Shiny (from Moana)" on @DisneyMusicVEVO's channel here: • Jemaine Clement - Shin...

Moana is a 2016 American computer-animated musical fantasy comedy film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. The 56th film produced by the studio.
The film introduces Auliʻi Cravalho as Moana and also features the voices of Dwayne Johnson. The film features original songs written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foa'i and Mark Mancina, and an orchestral score also composed by Mancina. It tells the story of Moana, the strong-willed daughter of a chief of a Polynesian village, who is chosen by the ocean itself to reunite a mystical relic with the goddess Te Fiti.
It's my first time listening to Moana and my first time listening to Jemaine Clement - Shiny (from Moana)
#moana #jemaineclement #shiny #yobgs - Hudba
Are you pro or anti Shiny? I honestly loved it and if anything it is the song so far that MOST made me want to watch the movie. Thanks for checking this out, if you had fun remember to SUBSCRIBE, I hope you have an incredible day and I'll see ya next time!
Idk 😀
The green shiny is the heart of Tefiti. Basically magic stone with much power and stuff.
@@thesteamengineer442 Yeah...
( *slight spoilers*
Moana just made the one she had at the end with the green shiny goo and a rock I believe... (unless I'm not remembering correctly)
Pro
Literally my favorite Moana song
I have no clue why people hated this song. It’s catchy, it’s funny, and tells a story. (It’s personally my favorite from Moana)
Agreed
Wait, people hated this song???
I thought everyone loved this song?
I thought it was great, but in my You're Welcome video some people were like "You should check out Shiny, I don't like it but I guess that would be cool"
@@YoBGS Yeah, I don't get why people hate it, Even when I first heard it years ago I thought it was very catchy
Maui was actually abandoned as a baby and wanted affection from the humans ever since.
To add to this, the hook is what allows him to shape shift and is the source of most of his powers. The crab glows because he is a deep sea crab.
And he said start as in startle, he thought Mowy (incorrectly spelled) was going to beat him again. You'll notice how he's missing a limb, he lost that in his last fight against Mowy.
Stop spoiling for him
Fucking- spoilers!
@@minimump5248 i agree but maybe tone down on the swearing
@@jordanporter1690 Nothing in that comment was a spoiler. It is literally only part of the main motivation of the story.
"Shiny" is just so different from the other songs, it stands out. I didn't like it at first but it's grown on me. It's the song I didn't know I needed until it existed.
"Did you like the song?"
Also, Shiny was sung by Jermaine Clement, and Lin actually imitated his style from Flight of the Conchords when writing it.
Ohhhh that's so cool! Now I have to check out flight of the conchords!!
@@YoBGS the song it's imitating is called Bowie in Space. Conchords are a whole other rabbit hole which might then lead onto the most recent Muppet Movies which Bret wrote the songs for
Despite being a demigod, Maui can't shapeshift on his own. The hook lets him change forms.
Tomatoa keeps the hook because he found it, he's greedy, and he's spiteful toward Maui since he ripped off on of his legs
Ahhhh that makes sense! See now I'm looking forward to watching this so I can check out the whole lore!
Pro shiny for sure. Maui is a shape shifter but needs his hook to do so. This is why he was stuck on the island during you’re welcome and why he needed to borrow that boat
Oh man fern gully is not something i have thought of in a long time. Tim Curry is an amazing singer.
OMG ITS TIM CURRY YOU'RE RIGHT! I legit completely forgot he voiced Hexxus!
Hey there, so here are two things you should know one; Tomatoa is a coconut crab known for being superstitious to South Pacific Islanders and two; when Tomatoa mentioned “I’m a diamond in the rough” serves as a reference to Aladdin and ironically enough the two directors of Moana are Ron Clements and John Musker the directors of Aladdin (1992),Hercules (1997), and The Princess and The Frog.
i would definitely watch movie reactions
I really don't know why people hate this song! It's one of my favourites from the movie! It's also the one that I find myself singing for days after watching the movie XD
I would totally be down to see a full Encanto/Moana reaction, if there's a way to do it without getting copywrite claimed into oblivion. They're both really good movies, especially Encanto, and I think the songs mean so much more in-context
You can do links to other websites.
Hexxus in Ferngully is voiced by Tim Curry, and has all of his charisma
Whereas Tomatoa is voiced by Jermaine Clement and has all of /his/ charisma, including the comedic effect
Ahh, thank you. It's been ages since I watched Ferngully and I couldn't remember the name of the smog cloud.
We definitely need some full reactions/reviews of these movies from you.
Also yes to both Moana and Encanto!!!!!
Yes please! I'd love to see your full reaction/review to both movies! ^^
Personally I’m not a fan of the song, and every time I even hear it mentioned I KNOW I’ll spend days singing SHINYYYY!!! Sometimes in the weirdest moments cuz it’s catchy af.
Haha it's the ear worm, that's super fair!
I love shiny, it’s such a good catchy song
Watching someone watch this with almost no actual context is amazing 😂
I would love to see You watch this video after you watch the full movie just so you can see what you got right, what you got close, and also what made me say "not even close😂"
very entertaining👍
Would love to see a Moana reaction, it's actually one of my more favored recent Disney movies. It's very rooted in Polynesian mythology.
Man, Moana is so good (and I think lately, Disney has hit their second wind in movies.) That said, if you were switching from reaction to review, my vote would have to go to Encanto, just for how hard it hits.
I’m loving these song reactions from moana and encanto honestly some of my fave disney movies !
watch moana! its so good! also, the crab is only in this one scene, there is no "big bad" in moana. also, good Hexxus reference, "Toxic love" was my favorite song in Fern Gully.
Tomatoa glows in the dark light because a lot of sea creatures have bioluminescence. Aslo not only is he based on the giant coconut crabs (that theoretically can break human bones) but the Decorator crab that covers its shell in things found on the ocean floor.
"You can't expect a demigod to beat a decapod" is one of my favorite lyrics ever. Right up there with TMBG "I'll take back my piñata; it's wasted on you."
Personally I love this song, Jemaine is awesome and the Bowie vibes are immaculate. ✨
And yes please, watch the movie, it's very good.
The Bowie tribute to even the dilated eye is amazing.
I would love to see a full Moana and Encanto reaction.
I would love full reviews of Moana and Encanto.
I would love to see full reactions to pretty much anything, but especially this - you're missing a lot of details that are probably changing how you see the songs and the story, and the whole thing is amazing.
This section of the movie is a bit of a side-quest, which might be why people are not as invested in the song. I'd certainly watch a full review of the movie!
There’s a wonderful bit of characterisation in Tamatoa‘s design. He is missing a leg and has a crab he can regrow that however crabs regrow limbs by shedding their shell. So he would rather be missing a leg than be not shiny.
I really, really hope you will review Moana and Encanto. Those are such great movies.
Love this reaction and the Ferngully ref is cherry on the top 😂👍
The reason the book is so important is that it is magical and is what allows Maui to shapeshift, and the pebble is literally the source of all life in this universe
Shiny and You're Welcome are honestly my favorite songs from Moana
I'd love to see you do a reaction/review of the whole movie
Also you should do We Know The Way next! It's the very first song in Moana and it's performed by Christopher Jackson who also plays George Washington in Hamilton
We Know the Way is performed by Opetaia Foa'i and Lin-Manuel Miranda. There's a great video where LMM finds out that John Lasseter loved Lin's demo of the song so much they decided to use it in the movie. Chris Jackson sings Where You Are.
Here's the clip: czcams.com/video/3PV3TN1rsCk/video.html
@@simbahunter8894 OMG you're right, my bad Where You Are is the song I meant
1. He's not a turtle. He's a crab.
2. He glows because most deep sea creatures have bio-luminescence. No black light required. Same sort of thing that makes fireflies glow.
You should definitely watch both Moana and Encanto, even if you don't review them. They are well worth the watch. But I would love to see your reaction to them.
I think it divides the fans because Moana is tied to a lot of Pacific Islander/Polynesian culture and folklore, the soundtrack is no different, all except for Shiny.
Now that you've listened to a few songs the movie is a must watch. You'll figure out the little shiny stone and Maui's hook and the whole story. As you've seen, the soundtrack is amazing, and the story and characters are so well written. It really pulls you in.
Heads up if you want to listen and react to more of the music from Moana. You’ve missed two of the songs, “Where You Are” and “We Know The Way”. “Where You Are” is the first song in the movie and definitely as a very “Bonjour” from Beauty and the Beast vibe. “We Know The Way” comes between “How Far I’ll Go” and “Your Welcome”. “We Know the Way” is hard to describe as a song, but very cool in the movie. Both have singers whose voices you should recognize from Hamilton. You need both of them to really get the last two songs in the movie, “I Am Moana” and “Know Who You Are” as both get referenced heavily.
OK. So the villain in Fern Gully is named Hexxus. He's not a tail pipe. He's a dark spirit that possessed a tree chopping machine because he thrives on destruction and pollution. Also he's voiced by Tim Curry, that's why he has the Dr. Frankenfurter type singing voice.
Tomotoa is voiced by Jermaine Clement. Who also sings like Tim Curry in his show "Flight of the Concordes". He's also the voice of Nigel the cockatoo in Dreamworks, Rio.
I love your song reactions and I just wanted to request for you to react to Mabey all or some of the “Tangled The Series” songs, (there’s like 34 total songs I think).
Your hair is AMAZING! 🤩
THANK YOU! It's been waaay to expensive to get it done lately but that makes me so happy!
Ooh, I love Ferngully!!
I sing along to Toxic Love every time!!!
As soon as you said "this turtle" I was like, "Oh, no. No! Don't you go Nostalgia Critic on me!" Also, if you like this guy, you'll love the channel Schaffrillas Productions.
It would be so fun to see your reaction to Moana
7:45 Tamatoa glows in the dark because of bioluminescence. He painted his shell with the excretions of the various creatures he eats so he’s always a spectacle no matter the lighting conditions.
8:45 The green shiny is the macguffin of the movie, basically.
How can someone not love this song????
The rock is the heart of Tafit that can create life and the one Moana had was a decoy but she still has the OG one
When you saw the CRAB glow you said ‘why is the turtle glowing
So, you have GOT to look at Overly Sarcastic's video on Hyacinthus. It's wild! It's also a little over two and a half minutes long, so watch a second one after.
All the reviews!!
I love the " c'est la vie mon amie" because french is cool
I love Ferngully and Tim Curry’s performance of Toxic Love. 2:44
Didn't expect to see a fern gully reference on this channel. I watched that on a vcr
Tamatoa is voiced by Jemaine Clement, in both the English and Māori versions
Definitely recommend reacting to “We Know The Way” from this movie. Lin sings in it! 🥰
2:40 …He’s got Tim-Curry-sma.
My niece was a toddler when this movie came out, and she *loved* Shiny - that was the song she kept singing to herself while playing.
Do a full Moana review. It's a great movie.
If you like villain songs, let's see... of more recent works there's Friends on the Other Side (The Frog Princess) that was really popular, and Mother Knows Best (Rapunzel). I'm sure you're aware of all the classics, but that's where you'll find a lot of the really big ones... Be Prepared (Lion King), Poor Unfortunate Souls (Little Mermaid), Cruella de Vil (101 Dalmations), and Gaston (Beauty and the Beast). There's also Hellfire (Hunchback of Notre Dame) which is another really big one, and also super creepy. Also it's not animated, but the Sanderson Sisters' performance of I Put a Spell On You (Hocus Pocus) is also a fan favorite.
This song is a straight jam... haters gonna hate. I always get Bowie vibes... which may have been on purpose considering it was released in 2016
It was exactly that...a Bowie tribute.
Tamatoe design is based of a coconut crab. Specie of giant land hermit crab that love to collect reflective and shiny object in it nest.
“shiny Enemy crab” 💀
😭😭
I told you that you would love this one haha
I found your channel because of you reacting to Jaiden's Nuzlocke videos and have now seen you reacting to these great songs. If you upload a full on review of Moana, Encanto or even Turning Red I will subscribe.
Best song of the movie.
Maybe you should check out The Campfire Song, The Day I Got Expelled or My Grand Plan from the lightning thief musical.
Trading the Rock for a pebble- ha! Took me a sec, but that’s a good one
When you call a crab a turtle
I love this song.
6:11 he thank Maui because Maui helped him find his first treasure
OMG IM EARLY FOR ONCE
HIII
also can't wait to watch
The green shiny is a barnacle coved in bioluminescence algae. As a diversion
the first time this song just fell a lil awkward because i was a smaller and more used to Disney having songs like let it go and how far I'll go only but a couple years later when I got more taste in music this is probably the best song in the movie
Oh it does remind me of the villain in Ferngully, which is Tim Curry btw.
Luminescence and Fluorescense in chemicals causes the glow in the dark effect (some plants/ animals can make it). The science of it is very interesting. In short it happens when atoms of certain chemicals drop to a lower energy state and then light is emitted instead of heat and even more interesting is that they can chain. The light emission of one reaction can trigger the next in a different chemical.
The singer is from Flight of the Concords
I have a idea to structure your movie reactions, watch the full movie on twitch (if you can't do that without getting copyright claimed just record it) then for your song reactions just cut to the parts where the song starts. (so you get more context)
Moana yes!
David Bowie had just died when Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote this song, which he intended as a tribute to Bowie's style.
So the glowing is that he is bioluminescent, like how certain minerals absorb sunlight but the second it's dark, it releases the light. Kind of like a natural glow stick lol
Also he was referring to the humans that adored all the things he used to do for them (the stuff he bragged about in "you're welcome" ) when he was singing about "Humans that made you feel wanted".
Now you should take a look at Jemaine's other animated villian songs from Rio and Rio 2....
While i love the original version of this song, I gotta shout out Jonathan Young's metal cover - it rocks even harder.
Ferngully is an absolute master piece. I'm amazed you referenced it haha. It's been so long I figured it was forgotten. The villain was my favorite!
Edit: To clarify, I believe the villain came from a toxic tree (stored away for thousands of years blah blah), and it eventually hid itself inside of the machine until ready to be released.
Hiya, new subscriber here. Go on, do a whole movie🙃
Make sure to watch after the credits when you review it
You know, they’re talking about doing a Labyrinth 2, and they’ve been trying to find someone who could do justice to the role of the Goblin King. I mean, there’s no one like David Bowie. He made that movie. But if you listen to the vocals on this song, you can hear some Bowie-ish elements. The kind of smooth/creaky/resonant/nasal/sexy (plus accent) thing that Bowie did. Just saying.
I love Shiny!
I don't know if this has already been said but if you look closely when Maui changes you can see Sven from frozen
I feel like this has major David Bowie vibes going on
thats why he 's big
I agree about Hexxus vibes, its sort of like it you got…Hexxus, Dr. Facillier, Paul Giamatti, and the golden speedo outfit guy persona from LMFAO’s sexy and i know it and blended them together.
I'd love to see you react to the "Moana Medley" by acapella group Voiceplay - it's great!
It’s the heart of tafiti
Tim Curry as Hex in Fergully was a treasure when he sang about all the pollution that humans do
This isn’t what I was expecting
Love the comparison to Hexus.
It's a good song, but what's even greater is Jonathan Young's metal cover of it. He makes an awesome villain.
I recommend watching/listening to Biggering and the maybe also check out the Top Ten Non-Disney Movie Villain Songs next.
The hook might not be shiny but it’s a great trophy
