Disney took a TON of liberties with the design of Maui's character,. A lot of Polynesians were pissed. Maui is supposed to be tall (not large), have a topknot, and be much younger (maybe 5 to 10 years older then Moana). And Disney came up with the idea of the tattoo's to help with telling backstory.

I heard an interview Dwayne gave about singing for the movie. He got pretty tipsy/drunk to overcome his nerves/stage fright. He can act while sober but singing is where his line is? ❤
