Except hardly anything is written about her in the Bible (which is the most authoritative record about the start of Christianity and Jesus), other than she was among his most loyal followers.
Why does she need her own movie?
Joaquim is the most underrated actor. He'an awesome actor. And weather you believe it or not Jesus story always gives goosebumps. Looking forward to watch this one.
Joaquin Phoenix is long overdue for all of the top awards within the Film Industry. Such a versatile, strong presence on screen regardless of film genre. He's ability to transform for each of his roles is nothing short of talent and magic. I also think River keeps a hand on his brothers shoulders giving Joaquin that extra UMPH when he needs it.

Mary Magdalene was never the leader of the Apostles. She was made equal with them to a great measure, but she was never their leader. This is very delusional false teaching.

One of the most dangerous things ever done was the removal of the actual interpretation of what God said to Eve in Genesis Chapter 3. When he cases Adam and Eve out, before that the actual translation of the last part of what he said to Eve is : *"You will seek to rule/control your husband, but he shall be lord over you."* That is in no way license to abuse women, but it is a condemnation and clarification of many things indeed. It also alludes to much of the behavior of evil women later in the Old Testament and to the advice given in Proverbs.
It also, I will *strongly add* , does not erase all of the good that women are and have in their hearts when they are right with God, even when they don't know all they need to from Him. The mistake is always in only presenting the snippets you like, not the entire story of Jesus.

Here is the issue with that: after the resurrection many things changed. All the old "religious rules" were broken. Mary was chosen to be the first witness to his resurrection for many reasons, the least of which was that the Apostles abandoned Christ at the most important time. They were restored, and she was also at Pentecost as well, but she was never "a simple listener" after that.

Looks amazing.. Mara Rooney and Joaquin Phoenix are two of my favorite actors!!.. BUT, Jesus never baptized.. He also DID NOT choose Mary to lead of his Disciples.. Also, it is subliminally suggesting Mary and Jesus had a relationship more than what the bible speaks of.. Looks like a great production and I LOVE the humanity of the characters.. But it looks like it will fall to being blasphemous in several possible ways.. Hollywood's version of Jesus will NEVER be what or who He really was and is.
surely no one is seeing this with the expectation of accuracy? it's a film created with extensive liberties. creative renditions of bible stories are not the blasphemy to be concerned about. try modern mega-churches preaching the 'propserity gospel' and selling christ-stickers for $5 a pop.
