Good video. For those being denied by Toyota, I wouldn't give up. Pull up a copy of the lawsuit and settlement agreement and look specifically at the terms and see if there's a loophole. For instance, in a different case I was nearly burned by a different company on a defective product similar to this, and I was denied replacement. I found specific favorable language in the settlement agreement, wrote the class action attorneys (mine and opposing counsel) and the judge a professional letter of complaint. It took some time, but that's the best approach and in the end, I was included in the terms of settlement and my products were replaced under the agreement. So that would be the correct approach.

Most direct and clear explanation of Tundra rust issue that I've seen yet. I'm in the market for a 1st gen Tundra as I'm tired of constantly replacing parts on my Silverado. One question, do you see much snow and road salt in your area? I'm worried that Tundra's from my area MD/PA might be too far gone due to road salt.

I drive a 2000 TRD 4WD bought in 2003 and it was a desert truck and have seen no signs of rust anywhere (although I work on the coast). I wonder , is this mainly a problem where road salt is used back east? I love this truck it has gotten me in and out of some remote spots and I carry a quad for when it gets real hairy. Frequently inspecting the frame and welds is a good idea no matter where you live!

Just bought a 2004 Sequoia for $4K. One previous owner, 154,000 miles, he had it inspected by Toyota and they said frame was OK. Noticed a lot of surface rust on the frame when I bought it but expected here in PA. Had a rusted out tubular cross bracket located near the fuel tank which cost me less than $150 to fix and part of rear exhaust needed replacing. Other than that these are great SUV's.

My 2007 qualified for the frame replacement. The day I drove it home, it started leaking fluid (turns out it is cracked seal on differential). While driving it to the dealership today, the rear of my SUV completely dropped. I was told by the dealership this has nothing t do with the recall. It is not drivable, towing system is completely rusted and they told me never to tow anything with it. They also told me the Toyota dealership in Arlington Heights IL noted 8 codes where there were potential problems (they never mentioned this to me when I picked up the vehicle). Toyota never communicated this recall. Very disappointed.

I remember when I first bought my truck back in 2014 I had called to see if they would just spray the frame because it had visible rust and scaling they told me the campaign ended in 2012 that I would not be covered fast forward to today and I have perforations in my frame, someone told me they started the recall back and I can see online where they have been replacing frames on 1st Gen Tundras- so I take my truck to the dealer and they told me that they would replace the frame only if it was rusted at the spare tire crossmember any other place they don't take into consideration. Oddly enough mine is solid by the spare tire carrier but I have holes just behind the front wheels and the C Channel is coming apart at the seams in the rear. I think I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and buy another truck as I tow an 8500 pound trailer with this thing daily-

Hey there Nathan! Great video! I have a 2001 Tundra with frame rust issues so bad you can see through the frame at one point and you can stick 2-3 through. I have two young boys I drive around to and from school, sports, etc and my mechanic pal said the frame could be compromised in an accident, which I am uncomfortable with. The truck has 165k miles on it and I just put a new radiator, new water pump, and a new rack in it, plus I have no money for a new truck. So, what is this paperwork that you mentioned in your video that discussed the recall that you got from the dealership and how do I acquire that paperwork. Thanks! Adam

I just received an updated Warranty Enhancement Notification notice from Toyota in the mail today. We have a 2005 Sequoia, and the Warranty Enhancement states that coverage for Rust Perforation has been extended to "the latter of 12 years from the Date of First Use (DOFU) or January 31, 2019." According to the notice, this is the result of a "Settlement Agreement" which I assume means a class action lawsuit. Nice!

@@roscoeelcocko1863 perhaps Toyota doesn't get that something so basic as the frame (like a foundation of a house) of a truck, and their unwillingness to replace it, is definitely going to hurt their sales. Have been looking at Toyotas, but started researching and found that Toyota seems to be more interested in what they feel they can get away with, than looking out for the safety of those driving their aging vehicles. Eventually somebody will have a major wreck due to these poorly protected frames (remember the stuck accelerator, that was Toyota) and they'll pay far more in law suits and legal fees than providing new frames. Toyota should just do the right thing. They're looking at this short term. For a company known for looking at things long term and planning ahead, they're screwing themselves and current owners. This isn't well known to the general public, yet. These frames, even if sprayed on the outside, may look okay, but from Nathan's description they're rusting from the inside out. By the time it shows outwardly that frame is done. No amount of spray will remedy that type of damage. This hurts consumer confidence and resale values for their brand, even if people are looking at vehicles that fall outside these affected models and years. Glad that Nathan shared his personal knowledge and experience. Was looking at a beautiful 03 Sequoia, but the unseen ugliness scares me and no longer feel confident. Every manufacturer screws up, but not every manufacturer screws up royally like Toyota has on two otherwise solidly built vehicles.
