  • Check out this 2019 RAM 2500 with Air Suspension. Because of the overall ride quality and benefits for hooking up a trailer, you should strongly consider opting for it if purchasing a 3/4 ton.
Big Thanks to Century Chrysler in Mount Airy, MD!

Be sure to understand your Payload, GVWR, GCWR, and GAWR before towing with any vehicle. The truck used in the video is not set up to tow this fifth wheel and was only for testing purposes only!!!

I own a 2019 RAM with air suspension. This is important - WHEN YOU DISCONNECT A FIFTH WHEEL TRAILER, lower the bed fully in BED LOWERING mode, and then select TIRE JACK mode. This temporarily shuts the air suspension off. If you don't do this, your truck will RISE UP immediately when the trailer disconnects and your truck's box will strike the trailer near the pinbox. Trust me, I know. It happened twice before I figured it out.

You could do it that way but I found it easier to raise the trailer to to the point were you see the truck just start to go up- pause at that point and let the air suspension correct itself, (lower pressure). You may need to do it once more but when you lift the trailer and see it lift off the hitch you can pull out without the truck raising and potentially hitting the trailer.

My Ram dually has the factory air ride. I always use the ALT ride height to soften the ride as it only takes out about an inch. My rv only uses about 1/2 the available cargo capacity at 2700 lbs on the pin. Another plus is you always have a level truck, no need for a level kit which in turn causes a nose high front end when towing heavy. Downside is expensive repairs, I've heard of people taking it off instead of spending the money to fix it, might want to think of extended warranty.

I have the system on my 2017. It is great. It automatically will adjust back up. It does it in a delayed way, so beware. It does not level the trailer, it just levels out the truck so you are running in the right way.
I tow trailers for a living and have 200K miles in towing. It is cool. I am purchasing a new one and will get an aftermarket system on the next one because they are less expensive to buy and maintain.

  • @cs-xd9gy
    @cs-xd9gy Před 4 lety +2

JB there is a way better way to use the suspension. when you go to unhook the trailer, take it out of alt trailer height. This will raise the truck. Block your trailer up and then go into the uconnect and put it in towing mode. My 2019 Ram calls it bed lowering mode. Its under controls in the uconnect. But I have the 8.4.
When in bed lowering mode or transport mode it will lower the bed and it will make the frame sit on the bumpstops. Mine moves 4 inches from Normal mode to transport mode, alt mode is a inch lower than normal mode but makes the truck level. No need for a leveling kit:) another plus for the air suspension. This will pull your ball out of your trailer and you will not have to use the trailer jacks. Let the truck do the work.
Now that your trailer is off the truck and blocked up, drive the truck out and the suspension will return to ride height by itself once you drive far/fast enough.
When hooking the trailer up. Go into transport mode, drive under the trailer, hit the switch to go to normal ride height and the truck will lift the trailer off of your blocks. remove the blocks and drive away. Go in to alt height mode and your truck will stay level as you drive.
I could not find a good video when I ordered my truck so I just bought the suspension anyway.
Now the 3500 with air will not move from normal height mode to alt mode without a load. I think because the leaf springs hold the truck up. The truck will tell you there is not enough payload to achieve alt trailer height.
Sorry for the long winded comment but there is just not enough info about the air suspension. And the manual is not help for telling you how to use it.

Beautiful truck! I traded a 2015 Jeep GC with the 5.7 Hemi and air suspension for a 2018 Ford F-150. I also looked at the Ram. Loved the truck. Just didn’t get as good a deal from Ram as I did my Ford dealer. VERY happy with my truck but that Ram with the KY Derby edition (I’m from Louisville originally 😊) is a damn nice truck. I miss having an air suspension. It was nice in an off-road SUV but has SO much usefulness for towing stuff this 2500 will be hooking up to.

As always great video man. That truck looks sick in front of that trailer. The air bags are cool for sure, but you know how I feel about them. Not that I am against them, just in my case they are a moot point. I am all about payload capacity. If you leave an 80 percent margin under max payload you will be fine, but that just me. I don't think anyone should operate at max capacity at any time. Air bags are a very nice feature, don't get me wrong, I am just not sold on them yet.

Thanks! The biggest benefit to me is if I want a truck that is turn key from the factory without having to go aftermarket for anything then the system would be added. I too am not sold on the system for the 3500’s only because the ride is somewhat better but not noticeably better. Also the system has very little adjustments. Maybe in the future as time goes they will continue to make the system better and offer more height levels.

30 foot sounds like a lot of weight to be towing with a small Pickup.
And yes the system in the 1500 Pickup is completely different and intended for comfort and ride height.
The system in this Truck is just the rear and intended for towing and hauling.

I usually complain about you driving on my grass, but I do have a real suggestion. You may have measured before and after at the wheel well to see if it adjusts to the proper height when towing a heavy load. I always believed that the air suspension was as much for drivers coming at you at night, so you don't blind them, as well as your ride.

Another nice video, JB. I ordered my 2017 RAM 3500 SRW Mega Cab Limited with the auto leveling and I love it. Once you add significant weight onto the rear of the truck, when switched on it comes on in delay to merely take the truck back to level. I'm not so sure they help non-towing ride quality. In 2017, the 2500 came with coil rear suspension which offers a much nicer ride. My 3500 has the super stiff heavy duty leaf springs which bounce you around quite a bit when non-towing. After one month of that, I swapped to the KYB 5100-B shocks on all four corners which really dampened the bumpiness quite well. I also run tire pressure at 65 psi in front and 55 psi in rear while not towing to help smooth the ride and it helps, too. I go back to 80 psi all around when towing, and the ride is super smooth. My 5th wheel is a 2018 full profile drop frame 39 foot Montana, so I had to have the 3500 for extra capacity. Gotta watch those combined weights and capacities for safety.

      Is your trailer towing Flat??
If it's high in the front your hitch is to tall.
You should have Minimal Rake on your trailer.
If you're flat now the only solution is to flip the axels and raise the hitch in the truck.

Tell me, that truck is legally overloaded, right? My 2018 Ram 2500 4x4 Limited Cummins is right on the edge as far as cargo capacity just hauling my 30 foot, supposedly half ton towable travel trailer. I'm talking legal capacities as per the manufactures rating. I didn't believe it either. Cat scale and also a very detailed weigh of each wheel separately, truck hitched and unhitched to weigh individually. Waste tanks empty fresh water full as per the organization that conducts the test. They want you to be ready to boondock. I almost never run with more than 20 gals of fresh water. Trailer loaded weighs 8,000 lbs. there is NO possibility of shifting weight rearward. I do have the factory air suspension. Run very well outfitted, tools up to 3/4 drive for a few things, I could change out a leaf spring on the side of the road if I had to for instance. Spares for everything that can and WILL go wrong while interstate traveling by RV. My rig fears no grade up or down even when overweight. I want to move up to something like the fifth wheel in this video but it seems like it will take a one ton which I don't want to do.
