- We have been asked many times to discuss the expenses of a junior doctor in the NHS. We've already talked about the salary of a doctor in the UK, as well as looked at the payslip of a junior doctor, but knowing how much you may spend will help you create a goal and a plan to save.
Budgeting well and knowing how to save towards a goal is not difficult if you ensure you know where all of your money is going. That is how we were able to put aside £62,500 in a year and a half towards a down payment on our first house.

Yes I was surprised how much you need to spend on paint, curtains, curtain rails etc when we bought our first house!
Exactly! We got lucky with the curtains, but everything else really added up.
I'm a currently an A level student in Malaysia,am planning to get my MBBS in China and then eventually practice in the UK. So I'm on my road to UK as its my main goal,and therefore I've found your videos very helpful and fascinating! Will definitely book a personal session when the time comes. Is it really easy to get locums? Where and how can one find them?
You speak with your hospital's rota office. Our hospital has an app that lets us book locums but the rota office also sends out a locum list email.

We didn't really 'skip' the FY2 post per se as it isn't mandatory, but what we did do is look at all the job posts for CT1 levels and see if they met our capabilities.

I am kinda confused what to opt in coming year.. I am a niqabi with a lot of ambitions.. But I don't know if I should opt for UK.. As far as I know they don't allow practicing veil for a doctor... It's much of my concern.....

Thank you for yet another great video! Just a Follow up question, you mentioned the monthly rent for your hospital accommodation was 600 pounds. Was that for a single room with an en-suite bathroom where you share the kitchen and living space, or a mini flat of your own? I’m trying to understand the cost of hospital accommodation so I can plan finances a bit better. There isn’t too much information on the web i could find either.

It was a two bedroom, one bath, with a kitchen and living room. No shared space.

It depends on your availability, shift availability, and ensuring you aren't breaking rota restrictions.
Is the bus free for all NHS doctors all over UK?
No. It was just something offered locally.

You will need to research the area you are looking to settle in. All of this information is available on the internet.

Yes if they allow for couples. Most are single or couples. We've not heard of any which take children, but there may be some.

This only really applies to international graduates who don't have medical debt. Most British medical graduates have £50,000 upwards of debt with repayments to be made in addition to other costs. Sure it's possible if you keep your costs very low and you live in a cheaper area of the country.
Yes we are a channel for IMGs, but the main concepts of budgeting and saving still hold. And it's not as though IMGs may not have debt or external costs either.

You can still utilize the same strategies mentioned in the video.
Can we save money to buy a house if we're not married? Very few unmarried ladies buy a house, especially international ones. Is it because a doctor's salary is less?
Yes, you can save your money just as well as anyone else. Being unmarried or a woman doesn't preclude you from keeping to the budget tips we've given in the video. Salary for an individual is not based on their marital status or gender- so the salary won't be less.
As mentioned in the video, find a range for which you'd be willing to pay for a place, and save towards it.

We saved our money on our own- so you don't need someone else if you have a defined goal of what you'd want to save towards. But yes, there being two of us, we could save more.

Can you talk about the wonderful work you do, in a profession you are preferliage to be in,instead of money money money!!! It's very off putting.
