Not just the funny noise but the very nicely done fish shape too!
5:08 When he was talking about the loudness of the glugs, I actually expected there to be something said about the shape of the fish mouth opening, serving as an amplifier for the glugs, much like a phonograph. I could be wrong though.
I think you're right, there's definitely a horn shape going on there.
He actually touched on that, he said it was the shape that contributes to the loudness because it’s much more open allowing more sound to escape. But it’s not shaped very much like a phonograph, more so just open in general. Phonographs have a significantly more dramatic opening shape. Almost anything that produces sounds uses a variation of those types of shape to a degree, to moderate between sound direction/precision and loudness/dissipation.
@@monhi64 As an acoustical engineer, I think there is at least some impedance matching horn effect. Especially if you freeze frame at 5:08, the air space between the water and the top edge of the 2D jug model has a shape very reminiscent of a conical horn cross section. I'll concede that moment is not one where a bubble is glugging up, but I think it illustrates how the combination of the waterline and vase can make a very horn-like shape.
I'm thinking about experimenting with this on a 3D printer. I'm curious if an even more pronounced horn could give it an even better "glug."
@@TheRationalPi I’m no acoustical engineer but I am an engineer not that it’s super relevant lmao. I’m curious what you mean tho, I checked out the time stamp and I think you’re talking about the shape that the water and his 3D print makes. But I don’t think you can consider water the same as a metal horn, I thought water is fairly pressure wave absorbent and wouldn’t reverberate correctly to amplify. The actual outline of the chamber is pretty consistent just open.
@@monhi64 From an acoustic standpoint, the water is basically a hard wall for the sound in air.
What matters on reflection at the air-water interface is the ratio of the specific acoustic impedance of air and of water. At 1:1, there's perfect transmission, but the ratio from air-to-water is around 1:3500, which gives 99.95% reflection.
You are probably being thrown off because sound travels really far in the ocean, but that has more to do with bulk energy loss in water.

P.s: I wouldn't have been able to do it or even known about it if not for your video.
Do the Assassin Teapot next, it's a teapot that pure 2 different liquid based on which hole you cover. I would love to see how it works.
"depending on which hole you cover" -- without knowing anything about the teapot, that right here is the key. I'll make a guess that there are two containers inside it, each with a different liquid and each connected to the one of the two different holes. When you cover one hole, you block air from rushing in so the liquid is stopped by the outside pressure. You need the little hole for air to rush in when you pour the liquid so that pressure inside would be the same as pressure outside.
In the one Tim demonstrated, you can clearly see the two sides. The explanation above is correct. czcams.com/video/kkrgUT70Mbo/video.html

Can we appreciate how "gluggle jug" is the perfect name for one of these things? And just when you thought the frequentative "-le" wasn't productive anymore!
It looks like the movement of the liquid in lighters, where you have two different sections of the body of the lighter and you have to tilt the lighter when there is no more liquid in the section that feeds the flame.
I actually was really close with my guess since i immediately thought of the bottle you pour something out of, however i didnt think the fluid would move out so smoothly
I remember playing with my dads lighter as a kid, it was ine of those transparent rechargeable clippos, had 2 chambers, and the pressurized gas ( in liquid state) made the same bubbles when going from one chamber to the other when tipping the lighter. No sound though...
I wonder if it didn’t make a sound because the vibrations were much more readily absorbed by the gas and thus not as transferred to the lighter body and to our ears? Since water is incompressible and all
I'm pretty sure it didn't make a (audible) sound because they're so small. I've played with those transparent lighters before too. It's not a lot of liquid, which is the thing actually making the sound, not the air bubbles.

Or how about a gurgling Pipes of Pan or should that be called a Pipes of Poseidon ?
And a much larger radius so that there will be bigger and/or more glugs

Das Boot oh ja that's more like it keep pouring
dont they have to turn the boot glass at the last moment at the end of the movie to prevent splash? I wonder if the glug jug "glugs" if it was turned sideways at the last moment to redirect the momentum of the fluid spilling out. That would be interesting to see the result of and the science behind it :)
Yes someone of culture
This thing is absolute bangers !,First time i hear of one and i want one like now
I see why you have so many subscribers. And I’m happy that there are so many of “them” (us now).
"I'd filmed it already - and it was cool." Justfication! 😆
Interestingly, the Belgian craft beer Kwak is always served in a glass that also causes a glug effect when drinking. It kind of causes the final few sips to get more of a foam layer to be reformed.
DAS BOOT! What a fun use of that concept!
Itd be really cool for a ceramics assignment to make this! Everyone would demonstrate their glug jug glug.
the flared mouth probably works as a horn to let the sound expand further. (side note I think your standing wave image on your tube is inverted for node and antinode)
Or like a horn bell
I think the image is correct. It's pressure node and antinode. It's inverted for displacement node and antinode
The drinking glass splashback effect has definitely happened to me more than once.
Also, petition to make "GLOIP" the new greeting for Steve and his fans?

I love it 🤪
Sign me the fuck up
I had a thermos that did that basically all the time, which is even worse because the jet is hot coffee.
So kind seeing big CZcamsrs like Steve Mould supporting smaller CZcamsrs like Mark Rober
Came to find this video specifically after making the discovery , the new shape of Fanta bottles that has the skinny section half way up is essentially a gluggle jug , the shape of the bottle causes air to behave really similar when you tip it up and back even the sound is the same , thank you this has been my ted talk 😂
My mind was blown when you talked about calculating height from resonant frequencies and IMHO, much more interesting than the jug itself.
Her: He's probably thinking about other girls
Me: Gluggle seems interesting, what's inside?
This also happens at whiskey bottles example basically shaped Jack Daniel bottles while pouring.
