I recently subscribed to your channel and have watched a number of your videos. As someone who's been tinkering with music production using Logic Pro in a home setup for a while, your videos are great little insights into techniques and processes. Really accessible nuggets of information that I can put to use. I just tried out this Mid Side technique on my latest track and it really enhanced it. Thank you for your great videos.

Very much digging your videos recently, keep up the good work 😁
I feel like I'm missing something fundamental with the whole mid side concept.
Mid is an artefact of having an L and an R, and doesn't actually exist discreetly as there is no mid channel or mid speaker. Whatever you do to the mid will affect each side, and whatever you do to one or both sides will affect the mid.
If I'm right with the above then it shouldn't work, but clearly it does work, so what am I missing? 🤔

The mid is not a discreet channel like the center in a 5.1 setup for example. Instead in this context the mid is simply the stereo channel collapsed to mono (the average of left and right channel). The side channel is in this case based on the difference between left and right (or more exactly = 0.5 * (Left - Right) ). We can the apply our processing the mid and side channel separately. After processing, a stereo version is created again by doing the conversion in reverse.
