Mike Mentzer was a bodybuilding genius and one of the sport’s most prominent and inspirational characters. During his short-lived career, he was the first bodybuilder in history to receive a perfect score of 300 and was famous for popularizing the high-intensity training technique that is still being discussed to this very day.
Mike was as controversial as he was enigmatic. He was known for going against the grain and for his disdain towards the IFBB after the 1980 Mr. Olympia loss that derailed his career and marked the beginning of his downfall.
It seemed like Mike and his younger brother Ray Mentzer had won the genetic lottery and were destined for greatness, but life was anything but easy for the Mentzers.
The pair died early in their mid-to-late forties. Ray suffered from a rare and debilitating kidney disorder, while Mike was a victim of drug addiction for many years. Going from bodybuilding superstardom to being institutionalized, arrested, and written off as crazy by those who were once peers, friends, and associates.
This Mike Mentzer documentary tells his story of dedication, tragedy, and redemption.
Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Mentzer started bodybuilding when he was 11 years old. He won several amateur bodybuilding competitions before turning professional in 1979, including the 1976 Mr. America title and the heavyweight division of the 1978 IFBB Mr. Universe. In late 1979, he won the heavyweight class of the Mr. Olympia, but lost in the overall to Frank Zane. In the 1980 Mr. Olympia he placed fourth in a tie with Boyer Coe behind Arnold Schwarzenegger, Chris Dickerson and Frank Zane. Influenced by the concepts developed by Arthur Jones, Mentzer devised and successfully implemented his own theory of bodybuilding. One of the most iconic bodybuilders of all time, his Heavy Duty Training program still inspires lifters to this day. In 2002, he was inducted into the IFBB Hall of Fame.

In a fairly judged contest , Chris Dickerson would have been a comfortable winner. I say that in the context of adding the "missing" judges in place of those selected to "help" Arnold. After that probably Zane , closely followed by Mentzer and Coe. I'm a Mentzer fan , but Dickerson (like Zane) was the type of physique being rewarded by the judges at that time ,so one has to put personal biases aside.

Arnold someone commented in some other video.. had a leg injury and took a cortizol shot.. with unexpected muscle smoothness effect..
Arnie spent 4 hrs sweatin it out in posin.. whatever that meant..
Arnie on that stage with the perfect tallness, the hair on the head, the posing, the presentation, the stage presence..the V taper......looked the winner..
others includin the prev year defender champion Frank Zane, Mike Mentzer, Boyer Coe, Roy Callendar, Roger Walker were lookin half baked.. out of place, tormented, victim card players, . crybaby cribbers..ameteurs..onstage..with defeated look in face..
Who wants victims to win that too, in a Mr O contest.. who cant defend and win Mr Olympia?
Look in the eyes.. who looks the winner.. who was scared.. who had given it up long ago..
THE COMPLETE PACKAGE.. Arnold rightly won that day in 1980

Well you can't imagine it, cause it's not an interest. #foryou. What's interesting about being an individual is, being able to make and pursue choices and behaviors that only you will end up dealing with. Some of the stuff that some prescribe to doing is compliments of their own vision. Whether or not it's blurry.
As for the favoritism part........there's so much that takes place behind the scenes that most do not know takes place, as well as happens. If anyone really believes that they can compete against whoever and everything is soley based on judgment and what's obvious......they will allow what they see and experience randomly to drive them insane.

He didn't pursue it his whole life. He pursued it seriously like 10 years. Did a single olympia and lost (how normal is it to not win the 1st olympia you go to? Very...) then threw a tempertantrum, gave up bodybuilding and his medical carrer then smoked meth till he died. Because he didnt win his 1st Olympia... Which he stil placed well at considering Ronnies 1st olympia he didn't even rank and 2nd came in 15th, infact it took him 6 olympias (half of Mikes entire career just in olympia comps) to win one.
Mike was an imature man used to being the winner and when he wasn't he packed a sad.

He was a jerk with a terrible, arrogant personality. He was addicted to amphetamines to the point that multiple times he admitted to "almost dying," and had to check himself into rehab multiple times. He was a massive drug abuser and likely one of the earliest abusers of Tren, in the form of Finaplex. He destroyed his health, and his brother followed in his footsteps, to the point that he didn't make it past 49 years old. His poor brother died at 47. Mike detailed his training style in a magazine interview in Muscular Development called "Mike Mentzer, The Untold Story." He shared his FOUR times a day training plan and told how he saw amphetamines as nearly a miracle drug that made him superhuman and super smart. He smoked his entire life. No sport would want a person like this as their top representative and role model. He was a mess his entire life. He just had fantastic genetics for steroids and bodybuilding. Lastly, he liked to say HE was screwed by Arnold at the 1980 Mr OIympia AS IF he would have won if Arnold wasn't there. He fails to mention that in addition to Arnold beating him, Boyer Coe beat him, Frank Zane beat him and Chris Dickerson beat him. So was it rigged for all FOUR of of them? A massive conspiracy to put Mike in 5th place? Come on. He wasn't winning the 1980 Mr Olympia, Arnold or no Arnold.

I met Mike Mentzer in February 1979 (in Liverpool, NY) at one of his then Heavy Duty Training (HDT) seminars (featuring Nautilus equipment) later to become High Intensity Training (HIT). I wrote a letter to Mike in 1980, to tell him of my interest in understanding exercise through the lens of the physical sciences. As the “thinking man’s bodybuilder” Mike and I clicked and we would remain friends until he departed this world in 2001. He has not been forgotten by me as I always mention him whenever I talk to folks about HIT through the eyes of a physical sciences professor; that along with my extension of his work (and that of Nautilus inventor Arthur Jones), which I call: Extra Heavy Duty Resistance Training or X-HDRT.

This was excellent. The best piece I've seen on Mike to date. At the time of Mike's peak as a bodybuilder I was a teenager and heavily influenced by Mike's Heavy Duty approach. I find his resurgence, over two decades after his passing, nothing short of amazing. Also amazing how today's exercise scientists such as Mike Israetel, feel compelled to constantly post videos about Mike. There may indeed be more modern approaches since Mike's time but Mike's methods worked more for me than high volume/low intensity ever did. I still find it tragic that Mike didn't return to bodybuilding competition after 1980 but I can understand why he didn't.

I started training in 1978. Contrary to today's beliefs drug use was rampant and totally legal. Lots of guys used doctor prescribed speed to get through grueling workouts and diets. Thyroid drugs and speed were the standard cutting stack. I would wager that most serious bodybuilders used speed at some point. Depending on a persons brain chemistry speed can give an almost instant state of uphoria and alertness that is extremely addictive. I watched a number of guys develop a dependence to the point they couldn't train without it. I was no exception. I didn't go overboard but definitely depended on the stimulants to creat the drive for intense workouts. I quit after having an injury that sidelined me from training for several years. I have always thought that Mike may have been one of those people that just couldn't walk away from the feeling of positive energy that speed gave some people it just creates a craving in the brain that's almost unshakable. It's been decades since I used any stimulants and still sometimes have the desire to use them. So sad that Mike couldn't shake that evil crap.

Personally I think that he just took those around him too serious, verses just seeing them (as he doesn't have to accept them) for who they are. It one thing to have your own thing and make decisions that align with your scruples and vision. But to enroll in and get down with something that you do not understand, much less control.........and expect specifics from it. Eh.......
