How I Write VIDEO GAME MUSIC! (and how you can too!)

- It's finally time for me to talk about one of my all-time favorite things... video game music! In this video, I talk about how I use light motifs and similar phrases throughout different tracks of a game demo I did a while ago.
Game music is seriously so awesome, as it can literally be anything! Any genre, any style, any instruments... endless possibilities! And it always sounds way too good.
I hope you enjoy watching as much as I enjoyed making this video, and can hopefully learn something from my process! This one took surprisingly long to make, but I wanted to show and explain a lot, so I think it was worth it! This tutorials keep getting longer and longer, so I'm going to try an get better at making them, haha.
EDIT: Sorry guys, I let a typo slip through; It's spelled "leitmotif," not "light motif." My bad!
My other tutorials!
• How I write my MELODIE...
• How I write CHORDS and...
• How I MIX and MASTER! ...
• How I write FILM SCORE...

Thanks for listening!
I'd just like to rectify your spelling, it's not "light motif" but "leitmotif" or "leitmotiv". "Leit" means "lead / conduct" in German. Otherwise great video !
Omg you're so right!! I even have it spelled properly in my notes too. My bad!! Thanks for pointing that out, haha.
Can't believe I did that 😅
Yes, I wanted to write that as well, but you were first.
@@AuroraCompositions It happens, don't worry too much about it ^^
@@fromixty I made a note of it in the video description. 😳
What an ass..
I have never seen a person so enthusiastic talking about gaming (music). Great video
Excellent video. Your personality really comes through. I'm a game designer and amateur musician and this video really provides excellent insight into motifs.
@@gardiner_bryant I'm so glad!
Before watching this video, I totally didn't realize how important it is to insert an iconic melody into every game's part. Her tutorials are so thorough, I hope she would make more game music tutorials. So, if you need more game music tutorials too, let's give this video a like.👍
Thank you so much! If you have any other game music questions or video requests, let me know!
Yesssss i love Leitmotifs! They make the game sound so freaking memorable
touhou mentioned, i shall now take all your advice for banger music
Even the fan songs and tracks made for games is just beyond badass.
In Doom: The Ancient Gods part 2, someone by the title "GeoffplaysGuitar" made their own Track idea for the fight against the Dark lord himself and there's this segment that just screams how intense and chaotic the fight is, how mistakes are not forgivable and how the Dark Lord is just as Hell bent as you to win the fight, not just for his survival but for the future of his reality and to make the eons of his suffering worth something.
And don't even get me started on people like JT music, MiracleofSound, Nerdout and so many more who made solid banger after banger for games regardless of popularity (Though I AM disappointed JT still never made a song for DevilMayCry)
But to this day, I still have yet to see games implement the music into the gameplay as much as Doom and DevilMayCry, not only did they make great soundtracks, but they also are entirely tangent with the gameplay itself, where the intense Argent Metal is only complimented by whatever weapon the Doomguy is using and the song Devil Trigger is so fantastically used, written and implemented in Nero's segments of DMC5.
Sure, plenty of games have great music, The Last of Us 1, Borderlands (any of them), Portal, etc. But those two Devil slaying sagas are just something else.
It's always cool to see game composers use something other than Pro Tools. I'm sure it's a great software and all, but it's just nice to watch people vary what they do :3
2:53 I was expecting the leitmotif to slowly become Guren no Yumiya and already started laughing at the idea
🤣 🤣
"they're expecting me to just list an artist they know"
damn that is so insanely real, i sometimes just say "video game music" but it's crazy that people just react like "oooooh cool cool" like they're shrugging it off. idk we got some bangers
Very cool video, i like ur chill style. just a clarinet player (and sound designer, sometimes for games) here, i never encountered your channel before today but mmmm yummy game music. keep up da good work
one more edit: you talking about the tut music theme being used for final boss and getting all passionate about it was sick HAHA i loved that part
Definitely! Video game *is* real music! And thank you so much; I do all the voice overs in 1 go, and I usually end up getting excited as I talk, haha.
Funnily enough, I had an idea for how I specifically wanted to do the music to a game based on a cheaply animated series I work on called "The UUSF"
In the game, I have it so you fight different factions of enemies, each of which have their own theme when you battle them or are seeing them aggro on each other, (The Zombie mutants get Punk rock music, The Bandits get Crazy Western Battle music, the Agencies get Sci-fi dubstep music, etc.) But when those different types of groups fight each other, the music becomes a blend of the two genres so it perfectly encapsulates the two forces meeting and how it clashes.
THIS IS SUPER COOL!!! I love motifs they're so juicy, and I need more people talking about how they're actually made, not just analyzing where they're used!!!!
Better title: how I can't write video game music and why you can't either(without years of experience and knowledge)
Touhou for me was what got me into music, I already liked music, listened what my parents listened (which is really good music too), and listened some game ost like undertale's and music from animes and other cartoons by myself, but (maybe because I was so young) didn't paid much attention to it either, when I started to listen to Touhou Music (at the time I also started to play rhythm games) I began to get more invested into it, I specially liked to see how other people made their own covers, arrangements and stuff and made me want to do it myself (though I couldn't understand how for a while).
Now more related on the video, you can see on the first touhous for windows (6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and maybe more) there's a motif on the title screen themes that ties them together, which btw is also the pause sound of the games (just really speed up)
Also, I agree with you putting touhou 8 at 2:03 because it's ost is probably the best of the series, Which is also the first touhou I played
thanks you for sharing your experience and knowledge, Great video as always!!! (´・ω・`)
Yes, yes!! Touhou music and especially the orchestral remixes is what made me want to get into composing seriously! Touhou 8 is was my first and favorite, and the iconic touhou theme is just perfect. Early windows era Touhou just hits different.
as an Epic Gamer and aspiring composer, this entire video was amazing and i enjoyed every second of it. the tracks are inspiring, the tips are helpful (especially diving into leitmotifs and explaining ABC transition/loops), the drawings are awesome, and the overzealousness in composing is just perfect! i am going to binge watch your other tutorials now, thank you :D
@EpicGamerAlex thank you so much my fellow epic gamer!
What an interesting topic, I have always liked the leitmotifs that appear from time to time in video games soundtracks. I think they are a very powerful and delicate resource when it comes to accompanying stories. My favorites are from Undertale and Ace Combat.
Despite having some experience in composing music stuff (and plays (mostly rhythm) games too lmao), I find this very entertaining to watch~ :DDD
whooooa 4:06 is gooooood
Your music reminds me of Wildfrost's OST. That's so cool!
makes more sense, been subconsciously gunning for letimofs more lately, and your vid helped me understand it much better what my brain been craving me adding to my stuf! whats more, proud of myself. my ear be getting better, Was able to follow along without the edited in letters n.find the notes lol. (which is way better than me 3 weeks ago) also those sounded really good!
eyyooo touhou music goes so hard, big fan of ShibayanRecords' electro-vocal songs. Hearing the 'Locked Girl' motif in their song 'Cinderella is a Magician' makes my brain light up like a christmas tree
Yeah! Love Shybayan, so I know exactly what part you mean!
@@AuroraCompositions immaculate taste 🤝
TOUHOU! The touhou music fanbase is insane. You can find any theme remixed in almost any genre. ZUN'S way of handling copyright hits just such a sweet spot, and his themes are iconic. I love video game music too! High five!
For real, ZUN is such a legend; huge musical inspiration for me. You have good music taste, my friend!
ur real asf for making these videos fr
I like all of the deus ex ambient, combat and death music.
Leitmotif is a loan word from german that means "Leading motif", leading as in it leads you into a specific motif. Thought that was an interesting remark to make X)
Another remark is that my favourite thing ever in music is when multiple motifs are mixed into one song, so delicious (to my ears (brain??)) X D
Yes, I just realized my typo as soon as I uploaded the video, whoops. 🤭
@@AuroraCompositions No worries 🙂
Just found your channel, awesome video 😌👌 Leitmotifs are such a fun concept! I came across a recent example of leitmotifs shared between different games in the same series: The Legend of Zelda. In Tears of The Kingdom there’s a brief scene where Link reclaims the master sword (no spoilers, don’t worry 🤐) and the motif theme Fi’s Gratitude from Skyward Sword plays. Fans of ~the lore~ will understand the significance of that. But it’s such a subtle and unexpected, yet powerful detail to include. A great example of leitmotif!
HAHAHA YOUR SWEATER PATTERN IS SO FUNNY I LOVE IT
Fashion icon ✨️
Great stuff, really approachable.
now I'm hyped about a card roguelike that doesn't exist and you play as a Trap Card
really, awesome video with leitmotifs!!
also reminds me how TOTK used instrument itself to represent characters or story arc... there's so much way to do it!
Oh yeah! Video game music! Got realy excited upon seeing that title, and the video certainly didn't disappoint! You spoke about everything really well!
Gonna use quite a few of those tips eventually, something my videogame development course stuff doesn't include for some reason is music (at least hasn't while it should've been taught aaages ago) so this is actually a lifesaver if I ever need some of those tips one day!
Video game music truly is quite an amazing thing! As you mentioned it can be implemented in so many different ways and situations with a lot of freedom to it! Music is such an integral part of a videogame project for giving the user the feeling that the developers are trying to convey!
I find it impressive that you took part in many jams! I was invited by a friend for what would've been my very first one when I was new into learning that stuff, but life happened and didn't end up joining afterall, honestly, learning about your experiences do inspire me to one day (whenever I scramble the time haha) finally try joining a jam myself!
I really wish I had more to talk about, but you generally explained everything very well! to the point I don't know if I have much to add from my own knowlege from my side of things haha! And this video is really doing well.
And I knew those loops were familiar, I still had the memory in the back of my mind when you posted them as the "cube soundtrack" upload ages now, only remembered completely after checking the description, music is interesting! Heard it like once before and my brain still remembered it, wow!
Thank you! Whether you are gaming or programming, I hope this video can help you out with music!
or project wingman with the motif
It's like when you hear the wilhelm scream once, you can't stop hearing it 😂
hi starbuff :D
nier automata music is so great, award winning ost
Hell yeah!
great video
Thank you for this video 😢
Subscribed, Keep making video game related videos.
Youre brilliant. Keep it up dude 💪

Notes taken
LETS GOOOOOOOO
This was quite the watch. As a heads up it's called a "leitmotif"; it may sound like "light motif", but the name is supposed to evoke a "leading" or "main" feel compared to a regular motif, and I can't say "light" really translates to that. I was surprised to hear all the things being in the key of E. I was expecting to hear more modulation; I mean that did kinda happen when you played back your work in Wwise (first time I've seen the program in action, by the way). I have more appreciation for Live and its contents seeing this demo.
Item: Explore A reminded me a bit of the basic battle theme from Hybrid Heaven.
OoO! Thank you!
Really enjoyed this. Now subscribed!
@MisterChrista Thank you and welcome!
@@AuroraCompositions literally queuing more videos up!
why do i ear The Lick 😭 great stuff !!!
Cool
She's right! Take notes guys!!
it sound like a ace combat level lol
witch software do you use? is free?
I use Ableton Live 11 for producing music! (Not free.)
For implementing music into games, I used Wwise in this video. (Free!)
@@AuroraCompositions thanks!
Wait, did my comment get deleted ? if so, I was asking for some feedback, and you could've said no? If its not your doing, youtube is silly and my bad!
@@MiniHQ Never saw anything like that 🤔
@@AuroraCompositions CZcams fault, sorry for complaining like that. Ill lay some context. Essentially, i was asking for feedback on my own soundtracks i have created on my channel, i mentioned that the most recent videos had music where my old videos dont. Anyway, sorry for the confusion, i just listened to the music in this video and thought it was really good, so i was wondering if you'd give feedback. Obviously i totally understand if you dont want to, but i thought you had deleted the comment which made me make this one. Terribly sorry for the confusion!
@@AuroraCompositions I can totally understand now if you wish not to view my content after this confusion.
@MiniHQ All good, no worries! If you link your videos, I'll happily give them a listen 🎶
@@AuroraCompositions Ah, slight issue, i dont think youtube allows me to paste links, anyway, i recommend just looking at my most recent videos and ignore the bo2 Remix and the compilation of gaming clips (special activities) video, and in my community tab, i posted a link to my soundcloud. Feedback for the soundcloud isnt necessary but would also be nice. Sorry to be such a burden if this does seem like a lot lol. Pleasure talking and sorting this out!
how about hiring one because nowadays it's getting pointless to consider your hobby as a job
Yeah.... the grind never ends.
