This is a very informative video! It popped up on my feed just hours after being on someone’s homestead and they were explaining why they like Dexter cows. I was also excited when you mention you were in Denmark. My great-grandparents were from Esbjerg, Denmark :-)
I now! I love homemade "filmjölk". I have also used "creme fraiche" from the shop to sour milk that I collect from a neighbour. Yummie. My husband is not mikling anymore . Sometimes we can collect from our own cows but it´s not in our daily life.Lovely knowledge you share . Thank you dear Katrine.
i agree with you on the cruelty of over bred traits. I raise whippets, and they're phenomenally healthy because their very close to the wild dogs the sighthounds originate from. I don't habe cattle but I'm working toward it. I have a cousin with 200 head and spending time on his farm taught me that I love raising animals
I had know idea about that breeding of Jersey cows and I agree with you I don’t want to be apart of animal cruelty just to get more profit. We had actually planned to breed a Jersey with our Dexter also which would help them go back to normal size utters so thankfully we were on the right track without knowing it! I have 2 Jersey. 1 had huge udders before she calved. From the same farm Her sister was mediocre for an udder. Younger heifer gave me a strong Heifer calf, very pleased. Its all in what you want to invest in your herd. I am looking hard at Dexter.
I have a jersey/Angus cross that just calved on Monday. She definitely has a huge udder, but not nearly as big as the typical jersey. It's still huge and we have had to milk her along side her calf because he's not taking enough from her for the relief she needs

Thank you my friend! The acidophilus milk takes about 24 hours at warm room temp. and the milk in the glass container is fresh milk that has been in the fridge for 2 days. Bless you!

Do you have an opinion about miniature jersey cows? I live on 4 acreas in Alberta, Canada. It's illegal to distribute raw milk but I grew up on it. No one in my family EVER got sick. I'm thinking of getting a mini-jersey.
Trevor Stolz .... standard jerseys are not big cows. We have two. They really are sweet cows. Katie our 11 year old wont get in calf so we have been milking her 17 months. She gives 2 gallons a day but when she freshened, before we bought her, gave 5 gallons a day. We put calves on the other cow. They do need company. You would have to feed hay full time to supplement them. 4 acres is not enough. If you could find a Jersey crossed with Angus that might be an option. This lady’s Jersey Cross Dexter would be quite good too.
You realize that certain e.coli which is so dangerous, is a new strain that didn't exist "when we were kids". As an American pediatric ICU RN, I've seen devastating effects of raw milk. Being responsible in collection is imperative but remember that young children are susceptible in ways adults are. Just be aware it is not just a benign thing that's restricted for fun.
A mini jersey would be great on 4 acres and no you would not need to hay them the whole year... Also raw milk is fine. Tons of people still drink raw milk every day. Keep everything clean and you will be fine!
I'm making my yoghurt every day with milk form the local farmer`s cows which has around 3 to 4 % fat. The starter germs (lactophilus and bulgaricus) I bought from an internet shop in South Tirol (North Italy). The taste is better than the supermarket yoghurt. I wonder how my yoghurt tastes with your milk.
Here in the US we're breeding to restore Jersey's to their normal size. Have you ever tried highland cattle milk? Low volume but very smooth and creamy.

Dear Lao thank you for your kind words! Mixing the different breeds is a good idea. You usually get very hardy and healthy animals with a good temper. My cows turned out very different - some big and some small - and with not always a good udder. It can take quite a few attempts to make a cow you are really happy with. I no longer have cows. I now have sheep for meat, wool and milk. Bless you my friend!
Thank you for asking I used to have a cat and chickens but I had to put down my cat because he had sever heart problems and his lungs filled up with fluid so we couldn't save him and I gave away the chickens to a farm because we moved recently to a house with a really small garden so I wasn't able to keep the and in a few months until like may or June we will be hopefully moving to a house with a massive garden and I will start raising chickens again and the only animal that I have now is a dog and i live in the UK

That big udder is normal for Jerseys. It depents how it is bred when the mother cow and the breeding bull has it in there genes they give it to there offsprings. We always had jerseys and I grew up with them and that was a normal thing. These days they are bred more with a higher udder
oh wow, so neat. I don't like freakishly oversized or undersized animals and animal parts....I agree, it is horrible. Hmm, I will have to research more on these two cows....my favorite is the Scottish Highland because it is hairy and looks cool.
I live in Germany and there are only Farmers who keep dexter cattle for meat, not milking. I wanted a small family cow but Iam not shure if I can milk it.
What about boil milk first..then let it cool down... finally Creme get separate on the top...collect it over time... Boil the collected creme ..you make nice ghee .. that's what indian had been doing for centuries

Yes the cows can go into a simple shelter under some trees - this is fine for them - getting out of the wind is important. The sheep and lambs are hard to keep fenced in - they run through - this is not good - for my grazing plan. ....Bless you dear friend! Love katrine

Pugs are a mistake, as are English Bulldogs, but there's lots of dogs that are wonderful as a result of breeding. Border Collies and Australian Cattle Dogs are full of intelligence and life. American Pit Bull Terriers are powerful and noble. Also, cattle are (in nature) supposed to be huge. The aurochs they were bred from were about twice the size of an Angus cow. Jersey cattle were smaller until recently, but that's because people bred aurochs to be tiny, not because cattle are supposed to be that size.

How many gallons would you say your dexters cows produce?
A good milker can make 5 litres besides what she gives her calf. That is at her peak. So perhaps she makes 10-12 litres a day at her peak.
