I used to read these when I was a schoolboy in another country back in the 70s. One of the books had a still from the then-new tv series and I had a crush on Father Boyd. It's taken me 40 years and CZcams to finally get to see the series. And I must say I rather enjoy it - it's very slow and gently by today's standards.

Was born and raised Catholic and have to say that I thoroughly enjoy this show. It is especially relevant (?) because I was born about the time depicted by this series and being northern Pennsylvania we of course had a succession of Irish priests.

I remember watching this show when I was in Seminary 40 years ago. My Field Placement was under a Priest from England. After Ordination, my Curacy was, to say the least, interesting. It was like going from Masterpiece Theatre to Life with Luigi. I felt like a supporting actor in a low budget Italian Opera.
This show was the most realistic portrayal of Clergy ever presented thank to it being based on Peter De Rosa time as a Curate. It is so good to be able to see it again, and as much as I hate to admit it, I am more like Fr. Duddleswell as my time in life, then the young Fr. Neil I once was.

@@tinapeters5725 For us it was Father Grile, only he was like Father Neil when I knew him. He baptized me, gave me my First Communion, and married my mother and stepfather, all in the space of a little over a year. (We all converted so they could marry in 1974.) I listened to his final Homily when he retired in... 2019 or so, online. He was a lot like Father D, even the humor! And I didn't remember his accent being so Irish when I was a kid. He was a very good part of my childhood and my family's recovery from catastrophe, and I was able to tell him so and thank him before he retired, albeit by email. He was such a decent guy. There were a few of the other kind of priests back then, before everyone wholly embraced Vatican II, the more surly, yelling a lot, everything is wrong kind, but Father Grile was young and very different at a time when the Church was struggling with its identity. I'm glad he landed at St. Alphonsus, and that they were a community who were open to the new direction that he represented.

Not sure I'm convinced by this analogy to be honest. Bless me Father was written by a former Catholic priest (Peter de Rosa
), and so the content is funny yet respectful. Father Ted was written by an aggressive atheist (Graham Linehan
) and is an inconsiderate and unsympathetic caricature of the Catholic priesthood and belittles Catholic Doctrine and practice. They're not complementary at all I would suggest.

Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view!"
Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam."
Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!"
Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..."
Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!"
Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky."
Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction."
Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment?

Personally, it gets downright annoying and irritating, when different playlists claim a particular series, etc, then dilude the list with more unrelated videos! It makes wasted bandwidth! Should be banned! This list is 162 videos, and few (10 out of 162 in the playlist) are of Bless Me Father series!

It's sad that counseling (from a professional registered therapist) isn't available for free under the national healthcare plan. ... I guess if it was, then the church would go bankrupt and forced to sell to the city to become a Community Centre.
