Making Knife from Hex nut (Bolt puukko)

- This time I decided to forge a puukko blade from an old rusty hex nut. I had to forge weld high carbon core, since the nut is mild steel and will not harden. I also thought that it would be cool if I shape the knife handle like a bolt with hex head. I used dogwood for the handle.

This process of sandwiching steel plates is really cool. Rich in sharpness, the toughness is also maintained, and the excellent appearance is nice work
and a bit easier to grind/sharpen :D pretty cool indeed
Handmade, rustic looking knives are awesome. The "missing symmetry of the layers" which you want to work on just adds to the unique handmade look of the knife in my opinion 😉 I like how it turned out in the end
Thanks mate , I am happy with how it turned out too . I just want to know how to control the moving of the material a bit more. I really appreciate your nice words , cheers.
@@RustLegion Hi, don't know if it's still an actual issue, it's been a year, but while forging a san mai and you want to achieve symmetrical-ish layers you need to beat one blow at a side, flip and beat the other constantly flipping the billet. This will produce as even layers as possible by hand. Good luck!
Thats a great blade! Nice job
Wicked awesome knife!
Love the blade!
:)
Pretty nice job
Good job man. Good luck with your channel 👍🍻👍

Zaebis :)
This dude just made a san mai puukko
yep :D
Not big on the hex but it’s a great blade and handle.
Yea it doesn't fit in the classic puukko shape , but man it feels nice to make something different that just popped in your head just for fun :D . Thank you.
@@RustLegion was not taking anything away brother, I love it mate👊🇦🇺🍺
@@scottb.0185 Cheers :)
Cool... What a Borax function?
Hello , the function of borax is to keep oxygen out and to melt oxides if they form between the layers , so the different pieces of steal fuse to each other :)
Hex nut knife? Very nice knife, awesome. But it is not hex nut knife anymore))). I have some knifes forged from bolts, hex nuts, motor valves. Soft steel, need sharpening often. Best steel is from bearing's.
Thank you :) Well yea not entirely , but still, a part of it is the nut :D , yep bearing steel is awesome. The one that I used for edge here is k510 - very similar to bearing steel (52100)

I will send you photo with my knifes. For free materials- steel, wood. Not paying money for this materials- bearing's,old files, rusty bolts,a lot of free material around.
@@Imuks Awesome knives my friend. Yes I love using old scrap and turn it to new usable tools. I really like your copper bolsters. Show me your forge if it's possible. Have a nice day :)
@@RustLegion ty mate. You must send me your email, and than I will share some videos for you. Nothing special, all is very simple, but if you want,I can show.

Yes , japanese swords and puukkos have some simmilar characteristics. That is why I like both.
@@RustLegion
In Japan, there is also a single-edged knife called Makiri, which is similar to Puukko knefe and Yakut Knife. All of them are made by forging, so I think it's interesting to try them.
Thank you for this information. I didn't know about the makiri knives. They look really simple and practical. Just what I like. I would like to try making them. Thank you again
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 👍🔰
Can you share the template?
Hello , I am not sure how to make an exact template so I made a drawing with the sizes. You may say that the profile of the blade is almost 99% the same , but the rest may vary slightly. - i.imgur.com/XhCBpfk.jpg , if you have any questions let me know. In future I may start making proper templates on my computer. Cheers
@@RustLegion thanks. My bad, i was thinking about this one from 9th second.
You talk to much
