Fluted handle Knife - From old file

- This time I decided to make elegant knife with fluted handle from old rusty file. I used boxwood because it looks like ivory. Also I used copper bolsters for the first time and I think it looks pretty cool.

"Peen the tang"..... REALLY? NO ONE? OK, just me...oh, yes, great craftsmanship, I wish I had any discernable skill
When I wrote this I was like - lol this sounds a bit wrong , I hope people don't notice :D
Some knives they just bend the tang over.
Awesome result ! I know how it's hard to make spiral on a handle, it takes lot of time and need t be extra careful cuz if you remove too much all the work before is done, great result great skills despite the frustrating hamon, the next one will be better I'm sure ! @@RustLegion Tip- If you get it to forge welding temps when you get rid of the teeth on the file. this will stop inclusions from forming.

That turned out beautifully. That's a really neat fixture you are using to hold your work when you sand and file the handle.
yes I saw the design on youtube for this knifemaker vise and I made a crude version of it. Really useful for handle sanding and handle engraving :)
That handle has to be grippy as all hell !!! & made of boxwood , it will hold its finished shape , of into eternity !!!

it is my second attempt , I have one practice piece that failed miserably. Also I watched my friend doing it and he gave me some tips :)
Pretty good puukko-esque knife. See old smith toolboxes from early 1900s and so forth, they forged knives like that from files. Fluted's not a common handle look, though the wood looks bit similar to birch. Boxwood and birch were pretty common handle materials in Northern Europe and the UK (which was more boxwood).
Why call it "puukko-esque"? As it fits the definition of a puukko basically perfectly.

That turned out insanely good. If you did another one like this but with a folded steel and copper Damascus with coco Bola handle and copper bolster that would look dope and I would buy it!🥴

You need to market this Fluted handle Knife, it’s amazingly nice and we know file metals are commonly good for knife.

Cool! This reminds me of an old Toijalan puukko I saw somewhere. You should try making one of those, it's a real challenge, but I'm sure you'd pull it of.

Well done! Beautiful knife you've made. Why did you quench it in hot oil and not in salty water (brine)??
actually I first quenched in hot oil , but the hardened edge was only 1-2 milimeters of the edge so I decided to try and quench second time with the same amount of clay , but this time I quenched for 3 seconds in hot water and then immediately in oil. The blade warped but I managed to straighten it out in the tempering oven. But the clay fell off very fast in the water so I think that's why it hardened almost all the blade. Unfortunately the water quench clip got corrupted and I couldn't show it in the video so I decided not to mention it. I need to make new formula for my clay so It doesn't fall off when I quench in water and also I need to leave the blade a bit thicker next time :)

Is the handle comfortable? Because its looks simply amazing, i want to do the same to my carving knife but i dont know if its comfortable.
hello there , this exact way of making the flutes turned out to be not very comfortable. Especially for wood carving, since you really need to hold it firmly and the ridges dig into your hand. Maybe if the grooves are not so big and the ridges not so pointy, or maybe if the grooves are convex and not concaved. But after this experiment - for me this type of handle is mainly decorative and to show some craftsmanship. Not so much for practical use. Oh and it makes taking it out of the sheath a bit harder than with smooth handle.

Nice work, but remember some american mastersmiths (I think it was Walter Sorrells) words: Never grind, when you can cut 🙂 that would safe you some hours of hard labour.
Very smart words indeed. Do you mean the grinding of the tang , the preparation of the wood or the guard?
@@RustLegion Most of all the wood. When making knives, I try to reduce the sanding times especially of the handles by cutting smartly first. Because of the nasty sawdust everywhere. But it looks really great and I will try such a handle myself with your technique of filing. And don´t worry about the hamon, it came out beautiful, though not intended this way 🙂
@@florianscherer3448 Yes I used very big chunk of wood . I was afraid that it will not fit the size of the handle because of the curve in the branch but at the end it turned out that I have to remove a lot of material. With brand new belt I would say that grinding is not any slower (I don't have bandsaw) but the dust really is a good reason to cut more and grind less :)
If you attempt this type of handle - good file is very important - sharp and not too coarse. Also - good light and patience :) Calculate the width of your file and then draw your lines .

@@capraknives I mix it , roughly 1:1 and you can also add some rust powder. Some people use satanite refractory mortar and it's available in the stores. There are tons of different recepies for differential hardening clay , not sure if mine is the optimal choice , just what i have on hand :)

Next knife do a seax but like the actual Anglo Saxon seax, not the stereotypical “Viking” seax. Look up some of the museum artifacts and they look completely different.
That's a good idea and I plan to do it at some point . I need to do some research first :)

I would not grind small pieces like that, a recipe for the piece to fly off injuring you. You could have finished grinding the copper ends once you mounted them to the handle.
Also you do not need to glue the handle to the blade. Accurately cut hole and small indents in the blade would resist handle coming off.
Old saying " many ways to skin a cat" , not if you cop an injury from your work.
In my opinion that fluting on the handle was waste of time, ad it only really contributes to looks, a better alternative would be to profile the handle to your fingers.
Otherwise, interesting video especially your hardening and tempering process.
Hello sir, Thank you for your comment :) I grind the copper before I glue it , because if I have too much to grind on the handle it may get hot and burn the wood next to it. The worse injury that could happen is to grind my nail or skin a bit but for this operation I use old belt so it won't hurt too much. The biggest problem is that it gets really hot and have to dip it in the bucket all the time or it burns my fingers. Maybe not the best way to do it indeed , but most time efficient for me :) But thank you for your concern. I can't drill a hole so perfectly fitting the tang (it will take me too much time and still it will wiggle a bit) that's why I use epoxy. You are right the flutes are not very practical , for light tasks it's ok , but for wood carving where you have to hold the handle really strong it digs in your hand. But This handle was made mainly as a test for my skill and for aesthetics. I like to make practical work knives but every now and then I like to make something fancy that just looks pretty - I hope that you will understand :)
I don't get it... why forging a flat piece of metal??
because it was 10 millimeters thick and I need it at 4mm. Also I forged tang and bevels.
