Knife making - Puukko

  • This time I attempt to reproduce the Kauhava puukko , guided by the popular video with Kustaa Lammi and also with great help from the "Work In progress" blog post from Jari Liukko (links below). I hope that I don't offend traditional Finnish craftsmen with my work , I now truly appreciate their skills because this is not easy at all. I made a lot of mistakes and I skipped the brass inlay in the bark and the engravings on the brass elements because I was afraid that I'll ruin it. This is not a video showing how to do it - It's video showing how I learn to do it :)

      This is really impressive. It is very true to the art and craftsmanship of a genuine Finnish puukko, and especially to its heritage. Skill is one thing, but expressing an appreciation of the cultural significance is another level. Respect.

    This looks fantastic. Even though the decoration on the sheath is simple, it's still very beautiful and stylish. Great job and keep em coming. The part where you heat the knife, before quenching is like a movie: 2:00 - 2:08

    Anssi Ruusuvuori has made a fantastic and quite comprehensive book on puukkos, it even has some obscure puukko-types included. I think you would find it interesting/useful, but I'm not sure if it's available in english (there's a german version though).

    Outstanding craftsmanship!
    I'm sorry, if you said it, I missed it. What type carbon steel did you use for the blade? Instead of making a "dummy" knife, couldnt you wrap the actual knife in plastic food wrap instead to form the sheath?

    • @RustLegion
      @RustLegion  Před 7 měsíci +1

      I used k510 steel , also known as silversteel or 1.2210 . I made a dummy knife because I had to wrap the brass brace around it and I was afraid that it will damage the birch bark. I guess it can be done without it but I decided to follow the Kustaa Lammi video.
