      TheDustysix eh, I don't have the patience to actually provide physical care for another person, and I doubt anywhere wants a kid amongst their staff... not to mention they'd have to do ALL the talking, I'm awful at small talk and less than social.

      I have done a little VA volunteering. 1100 hrs., which is not a lot compared to many. I am a Disabled Vet myself. The nursing home was a tough assignment. You do none of the physical care, only employees. Transport is one area. Most of my time was in Enrollment.

      My Father enlisted in 1946 at the very end of the WW2 era and served US Army of Occupation in Mac Arthurs Dai Ichi Bldg. Headquarters in Tokyo. 3 of my Uncles and my dad's cousin were USMC veterans of the Pacific War. I served 39 years ago in Iwakuni.

    So glad WoWs is doing series like this.. So much history is simply overlooked. To interview the men (so few of the left) that served aboard these ships is especially good to see. These are the real men we should aspire to be like.

    Grew up in Louisiana for 14 years, lived in leesville and my great grandfather was in the navy and server on the uss Saratoga ( cv-3) aircraft carrier as a aaa gunner late war. He wanted to visit this ship as a family trip and we went out to it when i was 12 years old, it was a memorable trip and im glad that its so well preserved. I would definitely recommend visiting.

    This is great stuff. I remember going to the Kidd as a kid (no pun) and just being in awe. First naval ship I got to put foot on. Side story, one of my family members had a family friend whose father or uncle (can’t remember exactly, since it was sometime ago) was the camera operator on board during the engagement at Okinawa. He filmed the impact of the kamikaze into the amidships, and resulted in loosing an eye because of shrapnel. Amazing that he survived. Great video Wargaming.

    • @justjack648
      @justjack648 Před 6 lety +1

      Have you ever seen the single photo they were actually able to recover from a strand of film from those moments? Basically I hear this guy just started snapping pitcures away and away at this. The film boiled and was ruined, but one worn out looking capture remained. All it showed was this black contour of a plane against a grey background.

  • @techticianlarsproductions6180

    I grew up in Baton Rouge and got to tour and stay on this ship as a cub scout so many times. It's the reason I am in love with military history and why the Fletcher class and the Kidd name are my favorites in Navy history. I wish I could go back down there and see it all the time.

  • @danbreyfogle8486

    OUTSTANDING Video!!!! My Dad, Melvin S. Breyfogle (1926-2016) served aboard the USS Laws, a Fletcher Class Destroyer in 1944, 45, and 46. I am trying to learn everything I can about the ship as I am writing a book about his life and his Navy experience will be a significant part of the book. This is a very well made video, I enjoyed the interviews very much. My Dad is gone, I can no longer ask questions so hearing others speak about their experience helps.

    Yes WG please do more of this! But for Gods sake, dont ever again ask a veteran: "what is your selling point?" They sacrificed everything while on those ships to fight for freedom, they shouldnt sell their history... I know it sounds very patriotic, but we should pay a little bit more respect. 😁

    • @glrider100
      @glrider100 Před 6 lety +16

      Maybe rephrase the question to something like.. "What's the single most interesting thing about the Kidd, that sets it apart from other museum ships?" My father was a WWII veteran, and he never liked to talk about himself. Never sold himself, much like that entire generation. But! Ask him about someplace he's been, or some-one he's met, or something he's seen. And he was full of information. Next time, start asking him about things.. Like "How did you load the guns?" or "Who manned such-n-such station?" Followed up by "He sounds interesting." And you'll get information to fill encyclopedias.

    I've slept on Kidd and operated ham radio from it. Fun facts: it was the only ship allowed to fly the Jolly Roger and the only destroyer to have an ice cream machine. The ship has unique moorings. When the river is high the ship will float. When the river is low you can walk under the boat and touch the screws.

    I was aboard the U.S.S Henley DD 762, 2200 ton Fletcher class destroyer. Three twin five inch thirty-eights, three inch fifties, mark 15 torpedo's, K-guns, Hedgehogs, and depth charges. She was released to the Naval Reserves as a training ship in the seventies and later sold for scrap. Damn broke my heart. At that time I had the means to purchase the ship and a small lake to dock her. But considering her size
    she would have to be cut into at least five sections and to transfer her the the middle of the country....almost impossible. So she became someone's razor blade.

    • @justjack648
      @justjack648 Před 6 lety +1

      It had two in WW2. The Kamikaze plane destroyed that area, which had another set of torpedoes. But, like you said, they were useless. None of our allies had any good use for them, sometimes they would even hit, but not explode. So when they were repairing the ship, they decided to stick another gun on her.

    @cheshirekat3050 Před 4 lety

    Anyone who thinks that war is about adventure and glory, has never served in one; on the front lines.
    Never seen an 18-year-old kid trying to push his own intestines back into own his body.
    Never heard grown men crying for their mothers.
    Never had to pull pieces of what was moments earlier, their best friend, out of their hair.
    Never came home missing all four of their limbs.
    Or come home sound in body, but so haunted by the nightmares and the flashbacks, and the guilt, every day, that they turn to drugs or alcohol, just to make life bearable.
    Or had their mind snapped by the PTSD, and end up spending the rest of their life in a mental institution.
    We should support our troops by keeping them home, unless the U.S. or one of its allies has demonstrably been unlawfully attacked by another government's military.
    And even then, only after congress has shown definitive proof that the attack actually happened, and that they know exactly which country (or countries) was behind it.
    Supporting meaningless wars (and I stress the word "meaningless") isn't patriotic.
    Opposing politicians who want to start or continue illegal, unprovoked, unnecessary wars, just so they can raise their approval ratings, and their campaign contributors in the weapons/ammo industry can make a profit, is.
    The U.S. involvement in WWII, was both necessary, and legal.
    And the world became a much better place for the U.S. joining the fight against the Axis powers.
    As for the wars which the U.S. has fought in since then...pretty much a complete waste of human lives.
    The Korean war?
    Illegal; and lost.
    The U.S. involvement in Vietnam war?
    Lost.
    The war in Afghanistan?
    Still going on after 18 years; despite the fact that it's common knowledge that Bush Jr. lied about Afghanistan being behind the attacks of September 11th, 2001.
    The war in Iraq?
    Still going on, after 16 years; despite it being common knowledge that Bush Jr lied about Saddam Hussain being behind 9/11, and about Al Qaida being in Iraq (though they are, now), and about Saddam Hussain having weapons of mass destruction.
    There should be a federal law, requiring any U.S. president or member of congress, who decides to start a war, to immediately have one of their (adult) children or grandchildren, drafted, and sent straight to the front lines.

    I was om a Fast Frigate FFG46 and even in those days we were considered expendable when trying to protect a carrier against a Sub. We had ASROCs that could have nuclear depth charges. If these things were fire the limited range would mean our ship would be badly damaged or sunk. Protect the carrier.

This is the 3rd video about her, 4th if we count the teaser, yet nothing was said about the Fletcher (the name ship of her class) aside from what was on The Sullivans' and Kidd's Naval Legends videos.

    My family has a bit of a secret or maybe it’s family lore. My uncle Billy (William) Walker during WW2 was on a destroyer during WW2 he enlisted in 1938 before Pearl Harbor and he was a bit of an artist. He made the Jolly Roger flag for a destroyer he was on Don’t know if it’s true, but that’s the story. He stayed in the military after the war and taught others to use radar while in Japan. He married a Japanese woman during this time and retired from the military. He moved to Coronado San Diego and died in the 90s. He sold his art till the day he died.
