  • My favorite song ever. Supper's Ready was planned to be in the Live 1973 album but was deleted as the band requested it.
    I decided to use as a backing track the live version of the song that should have been on the album because it's the closest to studio version (compared with Shepperton or Melody), and the only one where Tony is using the Hohner Pianet and not the RMI EP (which I don't own).
    The ProSoloist is also not used in this version.
    Chapters :
    I "Lover's Leap"
    II "The Guaranteed Eternal Sanctuary Man" 0:00
    III "Ikhnaton and Itsacon and Their Band of Merry Men" 3:10
    IV "How Dare I Be So Beautiful?" 6:54
    V "Willow Farm" 8:25
    VI "Apocalypse in 9/8 (Co-Starring the Delicious Talents of Gabble Ratchet)" 12:51
    VII "As Sure As Eggs Is Eggs (Aching Men's Feet)" 18:10
    A full cover of the keyboard parts played by Tony Banks on Supper's Ready as performed by Genesis during all 1973 show.
    Played with a late 60's original Hammond L-100 series organ (L162S), Hohner Pianet + Fuzz and Mellotron M400.
    They all go through Leslie speaker.
    The settings of the Hammond are exactly the same used by Tony Banks according to the 1973 Live in Bataclan video footage and the Melody 1974 tv show.
    _______________________________________________
    Other :
    -There is a LOT of tempo variation during the song. That's why you can sometimes ear that i'm not 100% along the track.

    Beautifully done, and you highlight Tony's wonderful ability to compose and arrange interesting keyboard parts *within* the overall band sound, especially during Ikhnaton. Difficult for you to do with tempo, as you say, listening to yourself AND the playback! I didn't realise that the modulations back to As Sure As Eggs was dropped a whole tone live: I suppose this was so Pete could hit the high notes, similarly to the way Yes dropped a whole tone at the end of live versions of Close to the Edge.

      And I won't talk about the Apocalypse solo which is imo the best thing ever played on a keyboard.
      But about playing only, Supper's Ready is actually not that hard (compared with Slippermen for example), the most difficult thing is the duration (26 min)..

    like??? if i were the producer on this song i honestly would have fought with him on this thinking like "youre gonna overpower the vocal and confuse the focus of the song" in reference to all the counterpoint, but clearly in hindsight his playing works phenomenally so its a really great thing that i hadnt been born yet to interfere with the process 😂

  • @bretedwards2899
    @bretedwards2899 Před 2 lety +3

    Great job on a very long song, I think you are the first person who has done the entire song on keyboards. Here's another fun thought, with the improvement in keyboard sounds (ie Yamaha etc.) why not do the acoustic guitar arp parts on keyboards, as long as it makes sense.

    • @MathGsr
      @MathGsr  Před 2 lety +3

      Thanks !
      If I remember well there is only one other entire song cover, but it's not very accurate at keyboard point (but still amazing considering he did all instruments and singing).
      It took me almost a year to be able to transcribe the whole song almost exactly as it was played !
      As I said in the video (1:35), I will do Tony Banks 12 string guitar parts on another video because I want to keep this as a Keyboard cover.
      Otherwise the keyboards sounds can't be better since this is the exact keyboards used by Tony back in 1973.

    • @MathGsr
      @MathGsr  Před 7 měsíci

      Well I remember that I mostly used presets from my L100.
      That's my mistake, I always used the preset for the Lower keyboard while in apocalypse it must be drawbars..
      For the chapters where I used drawbars on the upper, I remember that I never opened a drawbar higher than 3 to increase the sound of the Perc, it worked perfectly well excepted if you have to play longer notes. Which is not the case in this song, longer notes are played on chapter with full organ preset.
      Always used the 2nd Perc also, never the 3rd.
      I can't remember exactly what was my drawabars settings but it was something like 233322110. Just adjusted it by ear directly while playing, took me around 3 days.
      I must check if I still own the original rush of the video, I edited the video to zoom on the keyboard so on the original rush I'll be able to see drawbars

    • @MathGsr
      @MathGsr  Před rokem +3

    Not sure about the "guitar solo" section of Ikhnaton but I always felt like Tony never did exactly the same thing there over the years. • @MathGsr

      After 1972 the "guitar solo" was played on the Pro Soloist with Fuzz Guitar preset.
