- Just days before Salt Lake City hosts the 2023 NBA All-Star Game, KUTV sat down with Utah Jazz Hall of Famer Karl Malone.
The Mailman talked about fond memories he had of the first All-Star Game hosted by Utah in 1993 - 30 years ago.
In addition to Malone and fellow Jazzman John Stockton, the game featured Michael Jordan, Dominique Wilkins, Charles Barkley, Shaquille O'Neal and several other NBA greats.
The Jazz pair were named co-MVPs of the game.

I love his view on load management. I grew up less than 2 hours away from SLC. Being that close, I still wasn't frequently going to jazz games, but when I did, my fear leading up to the games were that Malone or Stockton would be injured and not playing. I'm so glad they made sure that never happened. Makes me feel good to know that they kept that in mind.

If we fixate on the wrong choices of people even after they've tried to change then and refuse to see the good there are very few we will like. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were slave owners, MLK cheered on the raping of a woman, Abraham Lincoln was a very good man that opposed slavery but he didn't necessarily think of blacks and whites as equal. Bill Clinton most likely raped a woman before elected and lied to Congress about a gross affair with an intern. It may be true some of these aren't as bad as what Karl did in college but I feel there's redemption for Karl.

Say what you want about Malone, but he was reliable as a basketball player. I loved what he said about playing because you never know that it could be the only opportunity for a fan to see you play in person. Can't imagine players like Malone and Stockton getting games off for load management. They played every game. Two of the toughest players.

I was in high school when these guys played; I loved basketball, but Utah Jazz games didn't pass on TV in my country as often as the Celtics or Lakers or Bulls... I have to confess, even though I admired his efficiency, I was not so found of the Mailman's style of play as much as I was of Jordan's or Barkley's or Magic's. So many years have passed, and even with all the judgement people like to do about the way he led his life as a young man, what I see here is a hard working, genuine, humble man, seeking peace with himself and with life, who believes he can become better every day... as a person. I can't help but admire him; I like Karl Malone, the man, more even than Karl Malone, the player.
He used to hold a bball camp at my highschool in bossier Louisiana. I played football and a few of us worked out in the summer. He would come in and work out with us. He was honestly kind of a prick. His personality was much like his game. There was a treadmill in our weight room, he came in and fought me on it and bitched me out. It was his treadmill, but we did not know that. Just all around rude everyday that week
