  • You want to go green. But you need to drive big distances, carry 4 in comfort, and have some fun in the process. A performance hybrid saloon like the 508 SE could be the solution. But is it really as good, and as fast, as an all petrol version of BMW’s iconic 3 Series, which has been a Fifth Gear favourite for years? according to data table on the beginning of the video 508 is 205 and not 100 kg heavier than BMW... so being under a second slower than 200+ kg lighter car and having softer, more comfort oriented suspension (afterall, this are "every day" and not "dedicated race" cars), on such an enclosed and technical circuit, is rather respectable achievement... ;)

Peugeots were always like that! I still remember my Dad's 1971 504, it was pure pleasure to drive. Differences of 0.5 seconds leave most of us untouched! In the real life, the electric motor from the 508 should be able to pull the car quickly and efficiently where the 340i will struggle to keep fuel consumption to minimal in such situations like crawling in traffic and then picking up some speed. Even "economical" little petrol cars are not really economical at slow speeds and frequent stand still traffics. Fully electric and even hybrids really stand out in those situations and there's no surprise that the 508 beats the 340i on that scenario. We've got a plug-in hybrid and the fuel consumption is kept to an absolute minimum esp. in traffic! So there's no surprise if the 508's average fuel consumption is lower than the 340i.

Peugeot is really getting there. Not just the looks but also the driving as well as (semi) electrifying. However I'm not sure if this 508 is plug-in which I really hope. Our plug-in hybrid uses very little amount of petrol, even less than a diesel! On paper, yes the BMW 340i is faster than the 508 but where can you do it in real life?
Take VW Lupo Petrol vs. Lupo Diesel for example. On paper the Petrol beats the Diesel but in the real life so to say... 30 - 50 mph in FIFTH or SIXTH gear, the torquey Diesel pulls away effortlessly.
Point is the 508 is (or can be) faster than 340i where it counts in numerous of real life driving. If this hybrid is a plug-in then I'm all in for this 508. Normally I would like to go for the 340i but this is only tested in racing scenarios rather than real life.
For those saying ah ha! 340i should be nicer to sit in and to drive even for general use, I can agree with that but time has changed esp. when fuel prices soaring up and still not enough charging stations around - not to mention having to put up with a long wait while charging. A hybrid sits nicely between fully electric and fully internal combustion and that's why I'm giving the 508 more than just a chance.

508 is a pointlessly complicated car in so many ways it's ruined. Had potential to be great ,but the interior is ruined by the stupid i-cockpit and a bad seating position, while the drivertrain is just idiotically complicated. I'd rather have it with a 3 liter V6, without the batteries and two electric motors. The biggest issue is that these batteries run out very quickly while driving the car hard, and then you're left with a car that basically goes like it has 150hp and has to carry that extra battery weight around.

Nice though hopefully the 508 isn't automatic only, like almost all the other second gen 508!!
For some reason, they're nearly all automatics as said, like in the new 3 series, however you can still get a manual gearbox in each cars base diesel engines, but not in their base petrol or any other models - if any model should be the sole manual option, it should be the base petrol, not the diesel! 😯😂

It's a hybrid. It has to be automatic. Imagine this: "OK, I'm changing up to 4th gear and then I'll engage the front electric motor. No the rear one to get the tail out. Damn, I should be in 5th gear by now." No, a computer has to decide all that.
