    Thanks for the video. When my wipers quit moving my mind was filled how to take it a part and how much it would cost me. I took the arms off and the smooth splines looked ruined. Your video saved the day and money. I cleaned the up and so far so good.

    👍 Dude, thank you for taking your time in sharing your experiences. This info has helped. One wiper blade has stopped operating from my car and followed your advice, it worked very well. One Note: I found the wiper-blade's nut loosed when removing the cover. I still cleared the ridges and reset. Did it on both just to get it over with. All Good now!

    I've just replaced the linkage on my car and now the sweep on the driver wiper is a bit too long, my wiper hits the a piller and the lower seal. The linkage is straight so I think the aftermarket part is a bit long and I don't think the sweep can be adjusted, can it?

    Also if you don't want to buy new arms and you even this fix doesn't provide perfect grip - very soft wire. If you have very soft wire lying around, you can use it to make it fit better.

    I'm supprised that the splines will drive the aluminium, i would of expected you to need to wrap the splines with 1 to 2 turns of ptfe tape or tin foil to take up the room.

  • @spelunkerd

    Dissimilar metals in a water environment, no wonder they fail. I see the weaker metal, the aluminum, is designed to fail first, so the repair is easier than if the male end stripped out.

  • @d.4tay549
    @d.4tay549 Před 4 lety

    This is exactly what I am dealing with today. Thanks. It seems that the lost aluminum material would need to be replaced??? Inside the hole of the wiper arm; the metal has been worn smooth by the spindle. Could one add a metal resin, or coat it with a thin layer of something like JB Weld???

    • @michaellohre1470
      @michaellohre1470 Před 4 lety

      yes or add some wire to the wiper oriface, three pieces will add grip, or jb weld

    Hi. When reinstalling the new wiper arm do you drive it down on to the spline or just tighten the bolt?

  • @jonasobletter
    @jonasobletter Před rokem +1

    I wonder why car manufacturers haven‘nt figured out a better design for this. Like maybe use a stronger material instead of aluminum so they wont strip as easily. I have had two older cars and both of them have (partially) stripped wiper arms. Definetely a common thing in colder climates and people don‘t know these arms work so they use them as snow plows in the winter and strip them out. But the biggest problem was for both of my cars i could‘nt buy these arms new anymore otherwise it would be no biggie.

    • @murraystewartj
      @murraystewartj Před rokem +1

      I have this problem right now (passenger side luckily). As to why they use aluminum instead of steel on the wiper arm I'd guess it's to provide a known failure point (kinda like a fuse in an electrical circuit). Far better to strip out the arm than to screw up the underlying mechanism or drive motor and have to replace and adjust all that. Been there and it is not fun at all.

    My problem is the arms under the hood. Keeps detaching so they don't move.

  • @FireEater
    @FireEater Před 5 lety +1

    No amount of scraping out excess metal could fix my problem so I just ran my drill through the arm and post screwed in a black sheet metal screw works fine now. Easier and cheaper than replacing the wiper transmission. Good idea though just wouldn’t work for me.

      An easier fix someone just mentioned earlier was using PTFE tape any kind will do, and just tightening the screw, i just did it for my blazer who's outer arm was stripped smooth

  • @kirkgroeneveld3191
    @kirkgroeneveld3191 Před 2 lety

    Does this mean that after you clean the splines, that you must buy a new wiper arm? Or is it OK to reuse the old arm and it will grip?

    • @RichpinTv
      @RichpinTv  Před 2 lety

      After the first time it usually works but if the arm gets striped multiple time then the arm will eventually have to be replaced.

      @kirkgroeneveld3191 Před 2 lety +1

      3 years later but I'm in the same boat. Wiper fluid is frozen, blade went flying off on the highway this morning heading home from work, stopped and bought new blades, when I pulled the wiper arm up to put the new blade on stripped the arm on the drive. Now once my fingers thaw I gotta go out and attempt this. I really miss having a garage.
