      Joe Smith to be fair Indians were a Cinderella team out of the AL. 86 wins and had just lost Belle and Lofton. But yeah Florida was definitely the massive underdog in the WS.

      Craig Counsell if I have my facts straight, played in the two most recent World Series to be decided on the final at-bat since he would later be a member of the Arizona Diamonbacks when they beat the Yankees in Game 7 of the 2001 World Series.

    How the MLB managed to destroy one of the most lovable underdog franchises in sports and reduce it to a blank shell of its former awesomeness while the baseball world did nothing but blame the city of Miami and Marlins fans still makes me incredibly furious beyond belief. It's time we make the Marlins a real franchise again and bring back the ghosts of the old 1997 team. My God, they and the 2003 squad were one of the most lovable teams ever.

    Fun fact. Renteria got the game and series winning hit on an 0-1 pitch I. This game. Seven years and a day later, on a 1-0 pitch in St. Louis, Renteria made the game/series losing out.

    I remember the moment this happened. I was with my dad trying to get home to catch the ending of the game. We were at a Farm Store location on 44th street and University Dr listening to the game on the radio. I will never forget it.

    The state of Florida had the very best year in sports in 1997. Florida and Florida State were both in the Sugar Bowl national championship game and the Florida Marlins were in the World Series.

    this is the first world series i watched. i was 9 years old, and played little league--on the Indians. i remember when that ball sneaked into center field, and i sprinted from the room crying. and now my Dodgers just forced game 7 in the world series :)

    In all my years of being a Cleveland sports fan I have had many gut wrenching moments. This one by far is the most haunting. Worse than the drive. Worse than the fumble. Worse than the 95 and 16 World Series. I have seen this replay maybe 5 times since and every time I have to turn it off the second I see the ball clip Nagy’s glove.

    It’s really a shame that the very next year, they went 54-108, the worst follow up season for a defending World Series championship in MLB history. (The worst follow up year for a team that MADE the World Series was the 1915 Philadelphia Athletics, who went 43-109 after going 99-53 the previous year, making it to the World Series, but losing in an upset sweep to the Boston Braves)

    I remember the cars honking and flashing their lights on the road, down in little Havana the Cubans banging pots and pans. Finally my father pissed that he had to go down town at 5 in the AM to pick up a few 100 T-Shirts for JcPenney's. He was one of the mangers that was picked to go downtown and get them so the store would have them for sale when it opened.
