I'm quite new to the modelling world and bought my first RyeField Model, a Tiger 1 with lots of PE and even an aditional "upgrade solution". A nightmare because it has all steps about PE. Round parts are the worst. thank you for the tutorial, it's helping me a lot.

Videos like this just go to prove , no matter how old or clever you think you are, there's always something to learn. I have never thought of placing the PE between sanding sticks to sand them, or blackening the PE to give a rusted look to it. Thanks so much!!
Thank you1 I have building models for years but I did learn a few things from you so I am subscribing. Just a note, I usually just use vinegar instead of Blacken It. I just soak the entire brass fret in the vinegar for a few hours. Also helps to prep the brass for paint. Thanks again.

OMG I was one of those guys that ran away in horror when seeing PE in a model box but these tips really do make it sound easy. I will invest in the small block break and bending tools and try this . Thanks for sharing. PS Just subbed
Thanks for the video! I've blackened brass for other projects, but not a PE. I use Birchwood Casey products a lot for steel, and their Black Brass works great too. It's also a good idea to clean parts with acetone after you sand it, if the abrasive is aluminum oxide it can cause a reaction with the chemicals.

Great video. I am just getting into model ship building, starting work on the Tamiya HMS Lord Nelson in 1:700 scale. I have the Tom's PE kit and really needed some clue how to use it. This video was a big help. Thesmallshop should pay you a commission, I ordered the bug and the cutting kit from them before the video was half over ...lol.

Great tip on the CA in wax. I've been using this trick and it does seem to pot life quite a bit...and solved the mystery of why the candles weren't sticking to the damned birthday cake! :D

Thank you so much for the very informative video. I have two hobbies; one is working with photoetch parts, and the other is looking for photoetch parts that I was just holding with tweezers. Scientists do not believe that anything can exceed the speed of light however I think that I can prove that small photoetch parts, when held correctly in the right pair of tweezers and then launched explosively, can not only exceed the speed of light but go into an alternate reality universe. My only project so far with photoetch was the HMS King George the V 1/350 and it was a tough first project. I love how you use the glue to reinforce the joints and the blackening agent. I didn't do any of that. If it looked like it forded into position and stayed there, I just left it like that. It took me a few tries to realized that soldering parts were really a lost cause for me and I came to depend completely on the glue. I wish I could solder where it would help. Thought the sanding tip was fantastic. The most frustrating thing for me is that cyanoacrylate seems to stick to the tweezers and the photoetch parts the best, then to skin, and finally to plastic. As a suggestion do you have any links between some of the products that you show in the video? Especially the blue and olive-colored round variable cylinders. Could not catch the names of those or see the markings on them to get the manufacturers. Thanks again
Your welcome Thomas! Yes etch parts have a way of finding a hole in the universe and fly by light speed never to be found again. One trick that work great to find etch is stick some fine mesh such as pantyhose on the end of your vacuum tube and run it along the areas you figure it last went and you’ll find it stuck to the pantyhose every time. The tools your referring to are called the Multitool and you can find them through the company “The Small Shop” our if the US. Tell them Scott from the CZcams channel Small Soldier sent you. You have all these great tools yet, you don't use a PE-specific glue. There is quite a difference in Flexy vs. other CA adhesives. I suppose it is all a matter of preference or just not believing the hype. I've tested both side by side and the Flexy is superior to regular CA. Best wishes from Virginia, Cork

LOL! Yes it's a love hate relationship for myself as well. However It does get easier the more you do it. Try putting your CA in a tea candle (remove the wick first) it's amazing how long it will keep before drying up. Have fun! 😉
Hi Scott, loved your video especially how you bent the steps on the inclined ladder. I built a little jig with a 45 degree angle cut and move the ladder along while using a micro flat chisel to bend the steps. How do you form the complex curves required in funnel grills? They are tough enough when the funnel opening is round, but when it is elongated like Hood or many other ships like HMS Exeter, it can be a bit intimidating! Any suggestions would be most welcome! I use the needle as an applicator. When the needle gets glue build up as I use it I burn it off with a candle I keep lit as I work. I will certainly be doing more etch as I do updates. Thanks for watching and commenting. Any other questions don’t hesitate to ask. Cheers.

Super easy Only sharpened bump on the turret and scribed in the pistol port as it was missing totally. it's only 1/76 scale so detail isn't a major concern. free detail 👍
Awesome video, question thought? What kind of Glue do you use to put the PE with the plastic from the model, cause I tried to use ZAP Gel to glue a PE deck from my Yamato to the normal model, but didn't work.
@@thesant3905 I use Medium CA for jobs like that. I'm not sure why it didn't work for you. It's usually a fault of not sanding the PE part to give it some "tooth" to bond. You could also rough up the surface of the plastic part with a rough sanding stick or paper that could solve your problem. Good luck!
Excellent video!!! One question, why do you paint over the brass? Wouldn’t it be just the same to use the plastic and paint over that instead and save you a bunch of work? Or does the photo etch have more detail?
Na... photo etch is your friend you just need to know how to treat it. Keep an eye out as I'll be doing more like this in the future... including soldering etch.
one problem i got with round scapel like this, is it much brittle than a hobby knife, it fine, i had been broke 3 blade already, good thing is it dirt cheap to replace, btw, which scapel blade number did you use ?
I definitely understand, I have a 1/200 scale model airport that takes up a fifth of my garage. 1/200 is definitely the biggest and most interesting scale, but also the most expensive. And only being 15 means I don’t have very many options for job income.

Nobody who uses this tool had explained its other usage. What are those curves on plate are used for? These are are not just decoration. Please explain them.
@@SmallSoldier at 3:55 the curvature between the clamping tooth. I think you can use them to bend the PE, for the sherman tail light guard or use the the angles for 60, 30 and 90 degrees

I made the grills on the smokestacks (Funnels) with .020 plastic rods.
Very easy to do and looks right.

Small Soldier genius ! I never thought to heat the needle to get the glue flow 💁🏻♂️
Using black superglue is helpful, to see where it is. Then get debounder and take off the excess.

Thanks! Yes the purpose of the etch is exactly that. It helps replace less detailed parts that are too over scaled or just plain inaccurate.👍🏻
Or in some cases like my 1/570 Titanic the railings are think solid in detailed plastic so I got photo etch sets for it

Na... photo etch is your friend you just need to know how to treat it. Keep an eye out as I'll be doing more like this in the future... including soldering etch.
one problem i got with round scapel like this, is it much brittle than a hobby knife, it fine, i had been broke 3 blade already, good thing is it dirt cheap to replace, btw, which scapel blade number did you use ?
I use both types. The Excel #11 and Swan Morton round.
I just got the Revell Tirpitz platinum edition, and that has photo etched for days. 2190 pieces, probably half is photo etched.

I definitely understand, I have a 1/200 scale model airport that takes up a fifth of my garage. 1/200 is definitely the biggest and most interesting scale, but also the most expensive. And only being 15 means I don’t have very many options for job income.
Witch size is the best for pe bender when you have 1/16 models and 1/32?
I'd get the 8-inch bender if you're going for the Small Shop stuff. It'll help with the long stuff.

It’s for insulin shots but really any hypodermic needle will work. You just need to decide which size you prefer.👍🏽

I just checked and it doesn't look like Mission models sell tools anymore. You could try eBay. The tool is called the "Multitool."

Nobody who uses this tool had explained its other usage. What are those curves on plate are used for? These are are not just decoration. Please explain them.

@@SmallSoldier at 3:55 the curvature between the clamping tooth. I think you can use them to bend the PE, for the sherman tail light guard or use the the angles for 60, 30 and 90 degrees
