I actually redrew a cover of my own and taped it to the front while it was in my possession. I left my cover on when I returned to see if the library would keep it on. To my surprise, I checked up on it a few weeks later to see my cover still there with a note that said "thank you for fixing that terrible atrocity". I kinda want to do that again :)
Anytime I see a real person on the cover of a fiction book I'm just like WHYY?!? WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO DO THIS?!?! But I also wonder if in five years we'll look back on all the trendy ~minimalist~ covers you see today and go, "oh GOD we were so PRETENTIOUS."
I tend to really really hate versions of books that have movie adapted covers. It's getting better lately with Mrs. Peregrine and etc, but when I saw the Narnia redesigned covers I really really didn't like Aslan's CGI'd face on the cover :(

Hahahahaha 😂😂 And the cover is just a shirtless dude and a cuttlefish. Like, if you ever want to be entertained for hours just browse through shapeshifter erotica titles on Amazon. Because the covers are always ridiculous and the titles are full of puns. My friends and I have killed so much time doing this.

Kathryn-Rose Grant I never finished the series, but I've heard the plot is amazing around the last ten books or so. Either way, I tend to be as, if not more, interested in the fictional universe than the plot. Hence why Avatar is still one of my favorite movies, despite being a re-hashed Pocahontas.

I absolutely love that series!! I've bought it about four times just to give it to different people, even adults!! (ᵔ.ᵔ) But with the new covers. ( I really love the contrast between the colourful writing and black background. ) Xx

Nowadays, with Magnus Chase, Trials of Apollo and the new PJO covers, the covers don't look so bad. If you want to see for yourself, go check on Google.
The first time I saw the American covers for the Gone series by Michael Grant, I actually could not believe how awful they were. The UK ones are SO much nicer! One of my favourite things to do in second hand bookshops is go to the sf/fantasy section and look for the covers from the 70s/80s. They are always so hilariously bad, it's amazing.
One of my least favorite things when it comes to YA book covers is when they use actual models to represent the characters. For me, one of my favorite things is the interpretation of the physical traits of the characters and when you force the reader to use the models on the cover it kind of kills the experience of reading a little for me...
I'm Italian and I've read the Lux series and in Italy the covers are gorgeous: each book has a different color and they're not too much. I really love you channel!

Loved the old Pendragon covers, a nice window into what the protagonist looks like and how he grew through the series and it help me picture him and how like time worked and everything.... New covers? Random objects from each book in a different colour... Same kind of goes to the Gone series, but in the reverse. I mean i enjoyed seeing the characters on the original, but the new ones, which are just scenes from the book, give it a lot of charm and mystery.

I feel like the Shadowhunter chronicles have progressively gotten better each series, but if you look at the mortal instruments series without nostalgia they are just so bad. There's a version of the first four vampire diaries books that I adore, with all these illustrated leaves and birds and flowers. We had them in my school library and I was never able to find a place to buy them. If you google 'vampire diaries original book covers' they come up in the second or third image.
Haha, I am reading Unspoken right now, and I picked it up from the library specifically because I needed a new series and LIKED the cover :o My cover is dark red with the silhouette of a girl and a gate. I think its really pretty.
You know, the summary and the cover of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children originally kept me from reading the book, because when I looked it over, all I was thinking was "Oh, is this going to be like [insert book with magical orphans and a mean headmistress] but with even more magical children?" I finally got myself to read it, and that's when I realized that it was nothing like I had thought it would be.
Hey Regan! I have a book recommendation for you (the book has a beautiful cover don't worry :D). The Queen of Blood by Sara Beth Durst is an incredible high fantasy novel that I think you'd love: it has a cool magic system, a matriarchal society, and a LOT of female friendships. Highly recommend!
I got a copy of Unspoken from my public library a couple years ago, and I think it was an improvement on the one you had to suffer. It was a silhouette of the girl (if I remember correctly) and just a single color so much easier on the eyes.
the prettiest book covers i've seen are every leigh bardugo's books, especially the hardcover ones, an example being six of crows and crooked kingdom not only are the covers just beautiful but the pages on the outside of those at least are colored and just amazing
The Lux cover change is a tragedy. Thankfully, they re-released the final book with a cover more like the originals, which was nice. Also, YES to the Maximum Ride covers. That series has had at least 3 cover changes, all terrible. The original 3 covers were great. Once book 4 came out, it was downhill.
The covers forthe Swedish translations of Vampire Cademy are really nice. They are very simplistic and come in different, fun colors! That's basically why I got the translation instead of the original English ones

One of my least favorite things when it comes to YA book covers is when they use actual models to represent the characters. For me, one of my favorite things is the interpretation of the physical traits of the characters and when you force the reader to use the models on the cover it kind of kills the experience of reading a little for me...

I'm Italian and I've read the Lux series and in Italy the covers are gorgeous: each book has a different color and they're not too much.

I hate it so much when they put photos of actual human beings on the covers, it's like "here, don't bother imagining what the characters look like, we've done it for you !". Drawings of characters don't bother me as much, they can look cool but pictures are so cheesy
I love videos like this! I hate covers with models who are obviously 10+ years older than the character they represent, who are not the right ethnicity, or are not wearing clothes the character would wear, or the setting is totally wrong.
13 Little Blue Envelopes (especially the hardcover) is TRAGIC. However, when googling the cover to see if the really awful one was the hardcover or paperback, I discovered another design that seems to be a legit redesign (like, not fanmade or anything)? And it's not bad!

Ah I LOVED the Fire and Flood series. I'm a sucker for adventures/survival kind of things. They've actually got a new cover for the first one too that has an eye on it surrounded by a ring of Fire. Not horrible, but I definitely agree that by the second book the cover had lost its charm.

The UK covers of Anna and the French Kiss and The Vampire Diaries are so much nicer, which is what prompted me to pick them up.
The Lorien Legacies is my favorite series, but I have to agree with you. Changing the font would make a big difference.

I HAAAATE the maximum ride book covers, and also the mortal instrument series book covers. Generally I hate photographs of real people on my books. But these are the worst
Pretty Little Lairs with all the Barbie dolls always made me embarrassed to pick them up. They got worse as they went on too. If I remember right 5-8 were half face close ups of the dolls. So bad.
Ugh yes Vampire Academy (and Bloodlines) has the worst covers. Lol, I actually think the Anna and the French Kiss original cover is pretty cute xD. And definitely the Lux series has terrible covers. The cover change for that series makes me sad lol... I was so hopeful when I heard that the covers were changing but once I saw the new ones... ew no.

Loved the old Pendragon covers, a nice window into what the protagonist looks like and how he grew through the series and it help me picture him and how like time worked and everything.... New covers? Random objects from each book in a different colour...
Same kind of goes to the Gone series, but in the reverse. I mean i enjoyed seeing the characters on the original, but the new ones, which are just scenes from the book, give it a lot of charm and mystery.

I feel like the Shadowhunter chronicles have progressively gotten better each series, but if you look at the mortal instruments series without nostalgia they are just so bad. Man, that shiny have naked body weirdness hahaha, I felt so uncomfortable carrying those around in middle school and high school haha

The funny thing about the 'Obsidian' covers is: Normally the German covers are much worse than the American editions, but I would recommend you to look at the German 'Obsidian' covers: Absolutely stunning!

There's a version of the first four vampire diaries books that I adore, with all these illustrated leaves and birds and flowers. We had them in my school library and I was never able to find a place to buy them. If you google 'vampire diaries original book covers' they come up in the second or third image.
I was so happy for the danish covers for The Vampire Diaries when I saw the original ones. At first, i didn't even believe it was the real cover :)
See but the sad thing is that the naked hardcovers of the Lorien Legacies series are STUNNING. They got awful dust jackets though
Haha, I am reading Unspoken right now, and I picked it up from the library specifically because I needed a new series and LIKED the cover :o My cover is dark red with the silhouette of a girl and a gate. I think its really pretty.
You know, the summary and the cover of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children originally kept me from reading the book, because when I looked it over, all I was thinking was "Oh, is this going to be like [insert book with magical orphans and a mean headmistress] but with even more magical children?" I finally got myself to read it, and that's when I realized that it was nothing like I had thought it would be.
Hey Regan! I have a book recommendation for you (the book has a beautiful cover don't worry :D). The Queen of Blood by Sara Beth Durst is an incredible high fantasy novel that I think you'd love: it has a cool magic system, a matriarchal society, and a LOT of female friendships. Highly recommend!
I got a copy of Unspoken from my public library a couple years ago, and I think it was an improvement on the one you had to suffer. It was a silhouette of the girl (if I remember correctly) and just a single color so much easier on the eyes.

the prettiest book covers i've seen are every leigh bardugo's books, especially the hardcover ones, an example being six of crows and crooked kingdom not only are the covers just beautiful but the pages on the outside of those at least are colored and just amazing

I actually own the whole series of Vampire Academy with the original covers and when I look at them it's nostalgic but so funny.
The saddest part of the Unspoken trilogy is that the first book had the cutest paper cutout design and a burgundy-ish color. sigh...

I hate when a book has a picture of people as the cover, because it doesn't give me a chance to imagine the character for myself...
The Lux cover change is a tragedy. Thankfully, they re-released the final book with a cover more like the originals, which was nice. Also, YES to the Maximum Ride covers. That series has had at least 3 cover changes, all terrible. The original 3 covers were great. Once book 4 came out, it was downhill.
I agree with many of them. But I love the fever covers! But the books are bigger in the uk edition, maybe that's better

The covers forthe Swedish translations of Vampire Cademy are really nice. They are very simplistic and come in different, fun colors! That's basically why I got the translation instead of the original English ones
