Final Fantasy IX Ozma - Solo - Level 1 No Items No Phoenix Freya Only Single Character Challenge

- In order to end this battle victoriously, one will undoubtedly have to be familiar with Ozma's AI.
To begin with, Ozma chooses its actions depending on whether its turn count is an odd or an even number. In the former case, it will use either Flare Star, Meteor, Doomsday, Flare, Holy, Death or Absorb MP. If its turn count is an even number on the other hand, it will employ either Curse, Mini, Level 4 Holy, Level 5 Death, Curaga or Esuna. Additionally, most of these attacks are used only if certain conditions are met. For instance, Ozma will cast Holy only if at least a single character does not absorb the Holy element and is not affected by the Reflect status.
Apart from its main attack script, Ozma is one of the few enemies in FF IX to be provided with counter attacks. Not only may Ozma utilize the Berserk spell twice during the course of the battle, namely when its HP is reduced to a value less than 40,000 / less than 30,000, but also, much more frustratingly, may Ozma counter any(!) action executed by characters with its highly potent Curaga. Still, the probability with which Ozma will actually counter with Curaga is inversely related to its HP and ranges from approximately 13% to a staggering peak of 50%.
As a consequence of Ozma's disposition to employ Cuarag as a generic counter attack, one should better be lucky not to have to witness too many / any of Ozma's Curaga counter attacks. Since there is moreover no means to guard oneself against the Berserk status, one will have to resort to the Auto-Reflect ability to definitely prevent that status ailment.
Even though Ozma's attack pattern is notorious for its unpredictability, it is indeed possible to manipulate it quite immensely thanks to Freya.
Interestingly, while none of one's characters are on the field, which is the case when Freya is the only non-KOed party member and during her Jump animation, Ozma will use exclusively either Doomsday or Curaga (I have not found out what happens if Ozma's MP are used up since both attacks cost MP (Someone would like to investigate this?)).
If Ozma's HP are not lower than 27,767, it will use only Doomsday, otherwise it will use only Curaga.
Being in possession of these pieces of information, it should not be too complicated anymore to devise a suitable strategy to single-handedly break everyone's favorite long-expired, breathtakingly ugly, nuclear-waste-repository-flavored bubblegum ball...

I kinda laughed too. How does the cliff survive multiple Meteors in some cases as well as other spells? The reason why I didn't laugh too hard is because the Magic is targeting the characters specifically, not the environment. Though I'm sure we all praise you for the observation.

Curse is triggered every turn on the even number by chance. Because he is level 1 and has Reflect, the odds of Ozma casting Curse drastically increases. But because he managed to cripple over half of Ozma's life with the Spear/Doomsday trick, Ozma prioritizes more on Curaga than harming him with Curse. But even then, it's a huge amount of luck.

***** Huh..you're right, seems it is a disc 4 only item..I didn't realize, plus I don't think I payed attention to his equipment before anyway, I think I just skipped to the battle lol. So, he definitely did cheat somehow. Either this is on disc 3 and he cheated the equipment in, or it's on disc 4 and he used a cheat to keep everyone at LV1. Either way, definitely not legit.
Not only did he use mods to get to this point in the game to still be level one but the fight is also scripted.And yes I know how his a.I works I beat him legit at level 40.
+Iido's Gaming Den hes mastered nearly every skill. OBVIOUSLY he cheated. you cant gain that much ap without gaining experience as well. fyi though, this is actually easier to beat than say a mazed or nearly maxed party trying to fight ozma. fuck ozma. worst boss ever.
***** can you honestly get to that point in the game with every character at lv 1 though? i dont see it happening. almost every single enemy in the game can 1 shot you long before disk 3 if youre level 1.

It's entirely possible to beat the game with a party of LV1. The only place you are absolutely forced to gain EXP is the Pandemonium battles, so on a LV1 game, you'll need to choose which characters to "abandon" at that point and allow them to gain EXP.
The reason a LV1 game is possible is because of the abilities. With proper ability setups, and some lucky RNG with boss fights, LV1 characters can win the whole game.

If you're following a PG and choose for the specified characters not to get any exp, then it's 100% possible, others have done it, look it up

To keep people at Level 1:
1. Bosses don't give exp.
2. Stopping and Petrifying enemies does not give exp.
3. Using Zidane's "Flee" will not give exp.
4. Gaining the Virus status effect will not give exp.

I think once before with Quina, I used magic hammer and managed to damage his mana by like 9970mp (or around that much, I forget.)
at this point he tried to cast something and ended up with the "not enough mana" popup. He will then try to steal mana from the party the next turn and he is pretty good at that. I don't know what happens if he has run out of mana as well as my party. That Quina magic hammer was a pretty lucky hit. I never got a hit like that ever again.

Not exactly, in FF4, there are multiple setups to create infinite battle chains, with you getting more and more xp for each enemy that you kill. Thus, its possible to level Cecil from level 1 all the way to 99 in a single fight.

I always think Trace Kuja should have been four times tougher than the Yans and have been the end boss. Necron comes out of nowhere and rick rolls your team. Plus, he's as weak as American Beer.

Maybe some genius marketing tactic? Spoilers: The final boss has an agenda to beat you while optional side bosses more powerful don't. I think Bracosaurs are harder than Kefka and FFVI. FFV has Omega Weapon and Shinryu that are harder than X-Death. It's more fun the first time though.

Vivi can obtain it too. Doomsday attack everyone friends and foes with dark elemental. With equipment that abosrb dark you can be healed from it.
Actually no that is his regular HP but you need to take into consideration that FF IX doesn't have multi-hit attacks (the most you can deal in 1 turn would be 19998 thanks to Vivi or Eiko double magic) and also this is the weakened Ozma thanks to friendly animals quest (if you don't do it Doomsday actually heals him)
The friendly creatures quest removes long range, but right idea still.
Freya, Zidane, and Amarant are all level 1. That's impossible on disc 4, because at least one of them would have absorbed Amdusias's EXP in Pandemonium.
Freya has the Dragon Wrist equipped, which isn't obtainable until after going through the Shimmering Island.

Apparently, with this strat, Ozma loves to spam Doomsday and Curaga, so there is not much need to worry about the plethora of Ozma's other attacks. But yeah, better AI would have Ozma say, "100 HP? Here, have a meteor."

Ozma spams Doomsday, because there is no target to select at that moment. The first round and the last two rounds were luck, because of a possible meteor cast.
The only time Flare star will be casted in the game by either Kuja or Ozma, is when they're running low in MP (it's the only attac that deals more damage the more lvl the character it targets is in -very convenient in this one video- and that costs 0 MP to cast). So there had to be a whole lot of cheating to get this video made.

As a matter of fact, the only thing he cheated is the level of those 3 - Freya, Zidane and Amarant, since, as it was stated several times, it is impossible to not gain any exp from the "You are not alone" sequence.
The first fight against Amdusias is a forced fight with Freya, Zidane and Amarant, one of those must get the exp. Especially since those 3 encounters are specially modified to make those very encounters impossible to skip. At least in the PAL version, they are immune to stop, petrify etc. although their random encounter counter parts are very well affected by those.
Anything else he did was perfectly fine. To be honest, even if he kinda hacked that level, who cares, if everything else he does is perfectly possible. If I were asked to do as many videos as he does with different characters at level 1 and I would have to replay that level 1 challenge over... and over... again just for that, I had probably used some software to save about 30h of my time, too.
Now to come to the basics of "Flare-Star": Damage = level of target * 50, so it's easy to survive that.
Killing dragons for dragon crest: at disc 3 turn your party into a zombie party, best done with the zombie whale, since "Zombie Powder" doesn't inflict damage. Equip some coral rings, get Vivi in your party, go to the beach next to the Chocobo Forest and farm Serpions and Ironite, et voila, you get your 100 dragons without gaining EXP. You can heal your HP/MP at the spring water on the South Gate without removing the zombie status, it even resurrects dead zombies and keeps it.
End of explanation.

very good job indeed and i love freya shes my fav character it does suck that this game isnt truely possible to beat with level 1 characters due to the part in pandemonium but heck a loop holes a loop hole and a darn good win against an annoying boss is a darn good win in my book :)
I ALMOST considered this to be a hack. I didn't think it possible to run through the game without gaining exp, however after reading the comments, I retract my original idealism. In any case, hack or not, this demonstration is still pretty badass, considering all the handicaps put into place.
That said, this video and the comments have me interested in trying to do a lvl 1 run and take a crack at ozma myself, although I highly doubt I could do it. xD Very well done, sir.

Cool video. I did a solo on Ozma with Zidane 2 days ago (Ninja Gear and auto-reflect ftw xD) but i did it in lvl 15.
Now that i saw this video i wanna do a lvl1 solo with Zidane not Freya. So i have some questions.
How many tries did it take to defeat Ozma at lvl1? Cause a fight with Ozma is very luck reliable due to his unpredictability.

Every once in a while, you just browse through random video's being bored, and you hear someone using a GREAT song for their video. I swear, some of the music I listen to mostly are from those situations.

Persona music set to a Final Fantasy boss. Surprisingly awesome.
For all the "cheatz" commenters, this is 100% possible.
Things you should know before hating:
1. Behaviour patterns in PS1 (and some PS2 like Kingdom Hearts 2) games are very easy to understand and use;
2. This is what no one mentioned this far: base stats improve not only with levelling up, but also depending on what you have in your equip when you level up. If you level up with a damage based gear set, you'll gain a boost in damage, if you have a defense oriented gearset you'll get a defense boost instead, with lvlup boost staying the same with both gearsets.
The only "questionable" thing is how could Ozma's first attack deal only 50 damage, but I guess this guy kept magic defense stats on for the whole storyline, and got to this level of resistance. With the ultimate weapon equipped, anyone who says 1000+ damage is impossible is clearly an idiot.
***** Ozma does not recover HP from Doomsday if you do the friendly monster sidequest. Ozma is weak to Dark element if you do the sidequest.

That page, right there, states, and I quote, "Completing the Friendly Monsters sidequest before tackling Ozma offers some advantages to the player. Once it has been completed, Ozma will no longer be 'out of reach', despite being a flying opponent, and it therefore becomes possible to hit it with physical attacks. Additionally, Ozma will absorb Shadow-elemental attacks (and thus be healed by Doomsday) unless the sidequest is completed, in which case Ozma will become weak against the Shadow element."
Otherwise Freya would never be able to hit Ozma in this video either as she does physical damage.
That's the easiest part of the whole lv1 game: give a stone to each friendly monster, then go to the Yan Island and give a Diamond to the friendly Yan. That will unlock Dark weakness and normal Attack command vulnerability.

Ever heard of 122333? In FFXII, the minimum level you can end the game at is 122333 for the 6 playable characters. This is definitely possible, but very difficult. It's a challenge people do when they have some time to waste :P
The reason why Flare Star only did 5 damage is because it's one of those moves that are based on levels.
I'm fairly certain the damage of Flare Star is your level times 50 but I might be wrong on exact details
How did this happen when you HAD to do some fights using Freya and the other characters in order to get that far, which would undoubtedly level them?
I'm guessing you used a hack or cheat code to keep them that level for the purposes of the game or no?
In addition to that, how did you go as quickly as you did with no leveling so low speed? Was that natural?
One more question: How did your Dragon's Crest deal max damage? I thought it was based on Dragons/enemies killed? What is the dmg based on?
Great job. Must have taken hell of a long time to reach Ozma with Level 1 and levelling up weapons, armors, and Dragon Crest.
By the way, is it even possible to beat Ozma at Level 1 without doing the "friendly monsters" sidequest as you did? (which means you wouldn't be able to reflect shadow spells on him because he's immuned to it). Dragon Crest wouldn't do the job on its own right? I wonder if it's possible

The way I killed Ozma was by random accident, I didn't really have a president going in except to equip items that absorb doomsday (mainly demon mail and pumice pieces) and setting effect canceling and reflect abilities for curse + berserk. The team was Vivi, Steiner, and Garnet (although the 3rd could have been anyone) and went down as follows: Ozma Doomsday, Vivi Return Magic Doomsday, Vivi Doomsday, Steiner Doomsday Sword, Zidane 9999 Auto Attack, Garnet Random Summon, Ozma dead..... Didn't even last a round lol.
That's just plain epic!!

simple enough. In memoria, after killing the 4 guardians, there is a crystal world right before the last fight against Kuja. Those enemies give 14/15 AP each and no EXP.
Also, you can go to oeil vert and just throw gold needles at those epitaphs and with that they die without giving exp, but 2 ap, every time.
The only thing he did, which is not possible, is having all ultimate weapons at disk 4 and have zidane, freya and amarant at level 1 - due to a forced rest in pandemonium at the "you're not alone" sequence, which removes any form of virus and zombie.
What he's doing there, mechanics wise, is absolutely possible and can be repeated by anyone, except for the thing i mentioned above.
But, honestly, if i created as many videos as he does, i'd probably have some tool to prepare anything requested, too, to avoid those 20hrs of time i'd have to spend to get to the point in the game, where i could actually do, what's being requested.
Or, even if you're fast, you'd at least need something at around 10 hrs to get there... try doing that every time.
It's still cheating.

Flare star does 50 dmg multiplied by your level, so 50 x 1 = 50

Flare Star's damage is targetLevel*50. At Level 1, that equals exactly 50.

He has manipulated the AI, so has little worry for those spells. But yes, one curse, flare, or meteor and this fight is over.
Ozma will get healed from Doomsday if you have not done the friendly monster sidequest.
If you have done it, Ozma becomes weak against shadow damage.
I know it's possible to keep your characters at lvl1 and when you reach Lindblum, Freya will join your party at lvl1 if you have your party at that lvl.
But i started a new ff9 game a few days ago and i already completed my challenge and i don't feel like replaying the whole game again just to do a lvl 1 solo with Zidane.
Are you not using any gameshark codes? There are many battles in the game itself where you cannot flee. How come you did not recieve any xp up to this stage of the game?
Making legit level 1 file is possible... You can use Stop, Zombie, and other stuff to win battles without gaining EXP. There are 4 battles that you can't avoid EXP at all, 1 is Tantarian and it's skippable then other 3 are end of disc 3..
So in this special Ozma battle you can't progress story to disc 4 to make everyone level 1 and skip Tantarian... But sadly there is a gameshark in this video since you can't keep Zidane, Amarant, and Freya altogether in level 1...
So, Virus only prevents you from gaining experience, but still allows you to gain ability points? I thought it prevented both...

this fight isn´t the first right? because in the first one ozma more probably uses curse, but if you lose and reload without reseting the ps is easier

I have the same stats, equipment, and am in the front row but my attacks only do around 1000-1500. How is it that yours are doing as high as 2500? Does the position in line affect damage since that is the only difference I can see whereas my Freya is in position 3, yours is in 1.
